“Historical monastery of Arkadi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

One of the most historical monasteries in Crete is Arkadi. There, you can feel the passion of Cretan people for freedom and their self sacrifice.
In addition, the monastery has great architecture and is situated in a beautiful landscape .
It makes an excellent one day excursion together with surrounding places.
This place is of personal importance because one of my ansestors fought and was killed there during Cretan revolution in 1866.

“Beautiful and historic place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

I went to the 16th century Monastery of Arkadi on the little red train, the Talos Express - a slow and not very comfortable ride taking a slightly circuitous route to pick up more passengers along the coast road then making the 500m climb up into the hills. It took over one and half hours each way and we only had an hour there. I wished I had caught the local bus and been able to spend longer looking around.
Arkadi Monastery has great historical and spiritual significance. There is a beautiful church dedicated to St Constantine and St Helen, and the buildings of the monastery set around a courtyard. Outside the walls there is a very interesting ossuary where the skulls of the martyrs of the martyrs of the 1866 siege when Turkish forces were set against the local inhabitants who had taken refuge in the monastery.
There is a cafe but can't comment on this as didn't make use of it.
I would certainly like to go again and spend longer here. Very atmospheric place even with all the tourists.
