“manager very rude”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2009

We found the rooms very basic, but the veiw was fantastic. Most mornings we didn't have hot water which we reported to the manager but he was very rude and didn't seem to have a clue what to do.We arrived 9 sep and the kitchen was closed for the rest of our holiday so we had to make do with a very BASIC in room kitchen or eat out which was very expensive, as were the drinks in the hotel, when they had them as they kept running out of beer. The manager had a young swedish guy called Martin running the whole place. He worked from early morning till midnight 7 days a week, and was fantastic. It was Martin and some brilliant guest that made our holiday, not the hotel.

Just returned from a 2 week stay at Marilyn Hotel & Apartments. The only good thing about these apartments is the view of the sea which is very good. They could do with a lot of TLC as very dated and not that clean. There were no cooking utensils so it was impossible to make anything more than a salad. We therefore had to eat out everyday which exceeded our budget. At least we had a fridge and a small electric kettle but there were no saucepans or grill pan to cook anything with. The beds linen was changed every 3 days but you had to make up the bed yourself as the sheets were just left folded on the bed. As far as we could see the apartment was only mopped once during our stay. When you came out of the "shower" your bottom of your feet were black within minutes. If we had a mop, bucket and broom we would have cleaned it ourselves. The staff were non-existant apart from Martin, a young swedish student who seemed to have to do everything from the bar to cleaning the pool (which was also not very clean) and looking after the beach beds etc. Don,t go with children as road very busy and noisy.

We really didn't know what to expect as we couldn't find any reviews about the apartments but we have had a wonderful time.
We arrived around 4am and a key was left and a note letting us know which room we were in. We had booked a studio and requested a sea view which we got, the room is basic but comfortable and clean. The staff were friendly and not at all pushy, the beach was great not loads to do but we just wanted to relax and swim so perfect.
The walk into town is pretty hard going in the boiling sun but well worth it. We loved the old town and found plenty of lovely bars and restaurants.

I was so happy we took a gamble and came here, everything was as we hoped, enough to do but no rowdy groups, lovely food and not too expensive.

we arrived late on a friday and were put into a double room at the back. it was very small and very hot, even with air con! the balcony was tiny, the shower was rubbish and we looked over a kiddie amusement park(very noisy) The next morning we asked if someone moved out of the front studio apartments could we move in? the owner was very nice and within 2hrs we'd moved. wot a difference! we had to pay a suppliment for moving into a studio but it was well worth it! the view overlooked the beach, the breeze came in the balcony doors so we didnt need air con and the balcony was alot bigger and the shower was great. The owner and the staff were very freindly and helpful. The breakfasts and lunches were good, always headed out somewhere new for dinner. the beach is straight over the road. The pool is on the small side with only six loungers but beach is over the road with its own loungers and umbrellas for only 4 euros per person and that includes a cold drink to take with you. There is a supermarket right next door. It is a half hour walk along the sea front to the main Rethymon town or you can get a taxi. it was very windy when we were there and sometimes its difficult to get in swimming but it was in the 30s and the breeze was welcoming. There is a lovely restaurant not far on way to main town called the mediteranian pizzarea, its family run and they make you feel very welcome and the food was the best we had all week. One downside to the apartment is its on the front beach road along to town and the traffic never stops! scooters, buses motorbikes and cars all day and just about all night with horns getting peeped now and again etc so if you have small children you need to keep an eye on them it can be a bit dangerous. We sat and just watched the world go by on the balcony, there are some mad drivers out there so beware! All in all we had a good week. hope this gives you an idea of what to expect.x

We stayed at the Marilyn Apartments during the first week of July 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There are 11 one bedroom studios and 10 two bedroom apartments in the property across four floors. We stayed in an apartment which was lovely and spacious with a great sea-view. The kitchenette is well equipped but basic, with a good sized fridge and electric oven. The bathroom was clean and modern and all facilities in the room including the television were in good working order.
There is a modest sized pool at the front of the property which only has around six sun loungers and some chairs, although this never seems to be a problem as the apartments also enjoy a beautiful patch of rethymnon's sandy beach directly across the road in front of the property where a sun lounger costs a reasonable €4 for a day with a free drink included.
There is a snack bar located at the front of the property which serves simple snacks, pizzas and cold plates during the day and a full bar service during the evening until midnight. All of the rooms have remote controlled air conditioning for which there is a fee of €6 per day, there is also a small safety deposit box in the room which costs €14 per week.
The apartments are accessed at night / early morning by the side door down the small side street which runs between the apartment block and the very convenient supermarket next door. Guests are given a key for the external door with their room key which allows ease of access at any time to suit as the reception is staffed for 15 hours per day. Overall I would definitely recommend Marilyn apartments to anyone looking for a good base to explore rethymnon and the surrounding area. It is about 25 minutes walk along the seafront into rethymnon town centre from Perivolia where the apartments are located.
