“Not a good idea! Stay close to the beach instead”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

As usual I based my hotel stay on the reviews I read on tripadvisor but this time the reviews really mislead me. As a first time traveler to Greece I didn't know where to stay and I thought the city center was the right place to be, ah I was wrong. If you're in Crete you have to stay at the beach. City center is only for people who want a business trip or a really boring vacation. I stayed in this hotel for one night. There isn't much wrong with the hotel it's a okay hotel. Very average you won't be getting luxury or something out of this world. You will get a normal bed which is quite hard to sleep on, a very ordinary breakfast and after you've seen the city center you won't know what to do with your time. But I don't think its the hotels fault, its just that if you vacation to crete you need to stay at a resort close to a beach. This hotel is great for people who are in crete for bussiness but not for leisure. Thats what my taxi driver told me and thats the best advise I got.

We chose The Atrion based on it's good reviews and it's proximity to the airport as we arrived in Heraklion late and needed somewhere to stay the night. We were not disappointed. The room was quite small, but comfortable and well appointed. The staff were helpful and it was only 10 minutes in a taxi to the airport. The room rate was very reasonable and we felt we got excellent value for money. Our only real criticism would be the breakfast, which was mediocre.

Room Tip: Ask for the biggest room you can get, some are quite small.

We stayed at Atrion Hotel again and we were happy to find that the garden has been renovated and there is a very beautiful space outside to have the breakfast in the morning. The breakfast was excellent!!

We liked this hotel so much that we booked it for a subsequent vist to Heraklion.

The Good: Excellent customer service (I bugged them about the AC in our room at almost at midnight - they were very nice and eager to help), Nice clean rooms, very good selection at the breakfast buffet, room service prices are very reasonable, there was a mini-fridge in the room, water force is the shower was strong

The Bad: two twin beds instead of a king/queen bed (most hotels in greece are like this), Bathroom a bit small by US standards (again most hotels in greece are like that), elevator was super small (4 person max. occupancy)

Other Notes: A couple of blocks away from the main tourist street (2-3 min walk), There is a small restaurant across the street which was very good as well.

All in all, we had a positive experience and would definately stay at Atrion again.

Room Tip: Get a lower floor - to avoid the need to use the elevator all the time

Besides the fact that finding/reaching the hotel wasn't easy, that we were lucky to have a parking place (rental car booked thr. Sunny Cars:The Best!!!) within less than 50m from the hotel, we thaught Atrion was a good choice.
Close to the airport and lots of 'taverns' and eating places in the neighbourhood...
'SIGASIGA' is a fantastic tavern with very good food and at reasonable prices, only a few 100m up (Minotavou Street 2). It's a typical Crete place with cosy terrace and a superb interior; lovely bar, Mediterr.feeling/mural of a street scene, terrific atmosphere...just GO there!!!

Atrion is a no nonsense and clean place with friendly staff, nice and medium comfortable rooms, but...more comfort in bedding would make this hotel perfect! Beds are much to hard for us, sorry.

Wonderfull setting (open air) for breakfast, great choice in food, so in fact, I could surely advise this hotel if you don't have back-problems...
