Wonderful time, and breathtaking views of the mountains. I recommend the short video on "You Tube", it really captures the feel of the property. We'll be back!

We chose Villa Helidona because of its location (in the Cretan hills about 20 minutes south of the Heraklion airport and free of tourist distractions) and its Cretan-style construction and intriguing furnishings. We found even more good things about it after we arrived: an immaculate and well-supplied house, a friendly, helpful host, a relaxing patio/pool area with wonderful views of the countryside, and a large garden area with
various good things like fig, citrus, and apricot trees, one heavily laden with the sweet peach-like fruit. One of us even made preserves from the huge supply of them. Yum! Our week-long vacation on Crete was made very special by our stay at the beautiful Villa Helidona. We recommend it with enthusiasm!!

Room Tip: I loved the mezzanine with its cool nightly breeze

If you want to experience day to day life in a Crete village this is the place for you. We spent two weeks at this Villa with another couple and it was just wonderful. The small town of Espiskopi is charming and a very easy drive from the airport. There are Tavernas, a bank machine, butchers, and a grocery store all within walking distance. The Villa has a large pool, B.B,Q., two bathrooms, laundry facilities, internet access, and comfortable beds. We were a party of four and there was certainly room for four more. You will need a car to stay here as it is out of the way and you'll have to drive to get to the beach, historic sights, etc.... Parking can be a bit of a challenge as the streets of Espiskopi are old and narrow but with some help from the local lads this too can be conquered.
It was the most relaxing vacation we've enjoyed in many years and after a few days at Villa Helidona you really feel you've parked your your work and life at home. It is truly magical, especially if you're the sort of traveler who'd prefer to be offthe well-beaten tourist track.

My family and our friends stayed at Villa Helidona, Episkopi, Crete in early July 2001 and absolutely loved it! The villa was beautiful, every modern convenience including dishwasher and washing machine, but housed in a wonderful old restored building that the owner Dimitris has filled with antiques, comfy sofas and lots of "knicknaks" to make you feel at home. The pool was great, big, clean and obviously Dimitris' pride and joy. Every evening the children loved to watch the swallows swoop down to the pool to have a drink! Beyond the garden and pool was a vegetable garden, all organically grown where we could help ourselves to fresh tomatoes, apricots, onions, pears, apples, oranges, etc. The courtyard at the front of the house was a big suntrap, flowers everywhere and a great fountain for a water feature!! The village itself is a typical greek village, where there were absolutely no tourists. The local baker would tell us what time to come back for the fresh bread (all in sign language), the butcher gave us wonderfully fresh meat for the barbeque (all though maybe our sign language wasn't that great as I'm sure we ended up with goat instead of lamb - but marinated in the local red wine brought from the only village store, tasted fantastic). The fish van was the only thing to disturb the peace, about 7.30 am twice a week, horns blaring to let people know whereabouts he was in the village. Not a lot of choice from him but the sardines were excellent!! There are about 3 tavernas in the village, but we ate mainly at Effi's place, a 5 minute stagger back to the villa after copious amounts of free retsina. The children adored Effi, the food is great, not a lot of choice but all fresh and lovingly presented. Fast food freaks beware though, none of that here (thank god in my opinion), we tended to go for supper at about 8.30pm and not leave until well after midnight as it was all so relaxed and the locals just kept entertaining us! The children loved the food, especially the souvlakis - a greathing you would find here, beware though, one pizza topped with local cheeses is enough to feed a family of eight!!The villa is situated up in the hills, surrounded by olive groves, but still only about a 20 minute drive from Heraklion and beaches. If you are looking for a lively place to stay then this is not the one for you, however, if you are looking for a wonderfully relaxing, warm and hospitable holiday in a traditional cretan village then try and book it now!!PS. At the end of our holiday, the owner Dimitris gave us a drum of his own grown olive oil, difficult to carry back but brought back lovely memories when we got home.
