“Just reopened”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

We visited the newly reopened Archeological Museum and it was outstanding. This museum has all the really good pieces from Knossos and the other archeological sites on the island. It really gives you an appreciation of their culture and historical significance. When you visit Santorini you will see the same Minoan influence in the frescoes.

“very interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014 via mobile

I had a great day out to the museum there are a lot of interesting artefacts to see. You need to have some interest in history and want to learn more about the history of Crete. There is a lot to take in and a lot of pottery.
would definitely recommend going to Knossos and getting a guided tour as there are things in the museum that will make more sense.
Well worth a visit.

“Heraklion Archaeology museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

We visited the museum while on an Archaeology tour of Crete. It has been recently re-opened after extensive renovation, so it is not quite finished yet. But even so,it's well worth a visit. It has an absolutely stunning collection of artefacts, including my favourites which were cases full of beautifully decorated Minoan pots and vases.
The labelling isn't completed yet, so it can be confusing as to which things you can photograph, and which not.
The shop is very minimal, but you are allowed re-entry with your ticket, so you can get a coffee outside if you need one.

“Very much a must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2014

They've done a great job with the refurbishment, which apparently took many years. An amazing collection of finds from Crete's history, especially Minoan of course, well laid out and easy to get around. The general descriptions in each area are clear, in English (and Greek of course) and not too long, although there was insufficient labelling of individual artefacts for my taste (perhaps get an audio-guide). You could easily spend 2 or 3 hours here but it's also possible to get a good overview in a shorter visit if time is tight. I'm keen on archaeology whilst my wife is interested but less than me, but she thought this was an excellent museum and spent as long as I did looking at the pottery, stone vessels, gold and jewellery, and so on.
If you're a university student, of whatever age, take your student ID as entry is free. That seems to also be true for all the official museums and sites in Crete and presumably the rest of Greece - can be a big saving.
As someone else said, it needs a café, though there is a pleasant one just across the pedestrian crossing from the entrance.
