“Highly disappointing !!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

We went to Crete specifically to study the Minoan Civilization, and all of the tour/guide books indicate unequivocally that this Museum is the place to see everything that we wanted to see,

However, there was one room with in which parts of frescos reproduced and you could see what they might have looked like when they were whole, and another small room with some bits and bobs , but nowhere the wonderful collection and displays, which we had expected to be the highlight of our trip to Crete.

The reason?

Simple, they have been doing a "Renovation" of this museum since 2006 !!!!

No problems for them I guess, they get the same admission price...

WHAT A HUGE DISSAPPOINTMENT !

Obviously they don't let it be known that all of the treasures you're looking forward to seeing,
are put away for the " renovation"

“Recreation of ancient civilization”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

The history surrounding Knossos is fascinating; an ancient civilization with advanced knowledge of engineering and architecture that was destroyed following a volcanic eruption in Santorini. Subsequently man took several centuries to rediscover the knowledge lost along with the Minoan people.

Despite visiting in October (off season) the site remained busy with guided tour groups which can make exploring the complex difficult.

Most structures has been reconstructed since the initial discovery of the archeological site, intended to give one an impression of the Minoan civilization, although this may be inaccurate and doesn't allow the visitor to create their own impressions.

The authenticity of this archeological site has not been preserved, our visit didn't live up to expectations.

“Knossos Palace Heraklion Museum-Following the king Minos myth by the labyrinth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Definitely for the mojority of the visitors of the palace of Knossos the main reason that has attracted them to visit this place, is the legend of the minotaur and the labyrinth. A story that surely has provoked our imagination, since our school years. Here are a few basic instructions by a professional guide, for every visitor of the palace, who whishes to enjoy this visit the most.
Fisrt of all choose to visit the palace as early as possible, but for sure before 09.00 , when the first large groups of tourists start to arrive, (there are over 5.000 daily visiting the palace and complete your tour before it gets too hot, (especially in the months of June, July and August).
It is highly recomented to pre-arange on the net, a private tour, conducted by a licensed tour guide, with good rating by other visitors, that has the knowledge and background to respond to this duty. In the case you choose to join a group, avoid to join large groups for this tour, since in some occasions it will be very hard to follow and hear your guide.
Also it is essential that a visitor of the palace of Knossos has a minimum back ground of knowledge about how important this colture, reed some book about it and have some questions for your tour guide. This will help you enjoy the most of it.
It is wise to combine the visit to Knossos with a tour around the archeological museum of Heraklion, that is just a few kms away and view there the most representative findings of the first european high culture, like the bull head the disc of Phaistos and the fine Minoan frescoes, that were manly found at the Knossos Palace.
Also is is well worthy to walk to the historical center of Heraklion, to the lions square, with the Morosini fountain, the Saint Marcus and Saint Titus churches, the vetetian time Logia building and down to the Venetian harbor with the 'Koules' fortress.

“OK”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Disappointed with this place, particularly after reading the rave reviews. I did not like the the amount of glass, walkways, rope and concrete mixed in with the old stones. I understand the area has to be preserved, but there is way too much modern mixed in with the ancient - not my cup of tea, I prefer to see things way more natural.
