“A wonderful holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

We have just returned from a fortnight at Elounda Island Villas, which we found to be a very relaxing retreat. Fantastic views across the bay and some wonderful secluded bays on the island itself. Good accommodation and a great selection of food served on a daily basis. Lida is a perfect host who recommended places to visit and where to eat locally. I'm sure we'll return again, sooner rather than later.

Elounda Island Villas is a magical special place to stay, away from the crowds and with fantastic views over the bay to Elounda. It is really quiet and peaceful and we spent a wonderful week here.
Lida and her family make you feel very welcome and at home and will give help and advice whenever they can, and the cicadas in the gardens keep you company! The family are proud of the fact that the Villas are solar powered. They offer delicious breakfasts if you dont want to make your own, and there is always a 'special' available for lunch. Lida's ice creams are fantastic! She is also a talented artist and fills the place with her creative spirit.
The position of the Villas makes them unique and charming, and there are plenty of walks, swimming and also trips to make around the area with your hire car - if you can drag yourself away from your delightful balcony overlooking the sea!
We would stay here again in a shot if we go back to Crete.

We spent a lovely 4 day short break here at the end of May 2013.

It was so very peaceful and such a great location.

The service was wonderful - Lida is an excellent host and we were made to feel so at home.

I'm sure we'll be back

We had a wonderful time at Elounda Island Villas. It is quiet, relaxing and you get amazing views and sun sets. The family welcoming you is charming and would do anything to make you stay as good and comfortable as possible. It is a small complex with charming apartments looking across the bay from the village. If we ever go bak to Elounda we will definitely go back there.

Your host Lida makes your stay a joy. She will give you the best advice, tell you where to eat, what to see, what to visit and how to get there. The island is away from the ghastly noise of Elounda .. even so nightly the dreadful strains of Zorba wafted across the water to made us wish we were deaf. The island is reached by a causeway and a quaint bridge but is really difficult to find as it is not signposted, so ask for directions before going! The villas are old but dare I say rustic and 'cute'; beds are reached by stairs; kitchens are small but mostly complete although they could do with electric kettles or jugs, as the stove in ours was a touch difficult and we couldn't use it. Breakfast and lunch there was simply delicious and especially the banana smoothies. It's good value and we believe a good choice for families.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a higher balcony and so get more privacy and a view of the harbour and town across...

My friend and I have just returned from a wonderful week in Crete, staying at the Elounda Island Villas, a small holiday villa complex just across the bay from Elounda. If you’re looking for something special I can think of no better place to stay. Quiet and peaceful, the small villa complex is set by the bay with stunning views across to the mountainous mainland and the local towns of Elounda and Plaka. The complex is owned and run by the Alexopoulou family. Lida, their daughter and artist, successfully makes every effort to ensure your stay is stress-free and as enjoyable as it can be. This is the only holiday accommodation on the main Island of Spinalonga, the Government deciding after it was built to put a stop to further development. Congratulations to the Government for this initiative! There are easy walks to take in the views, snorkel in the sea to explore the sunken site of ancient Olous, lots of wildlife and wild herbs to delight in, and the tiny hidden beautiful cove of Kolokythia beach for swimming and sunbathing. This small beach, with its clean ‘silver’ sand and clear blue sea, where small fish greet you with a friendly brush against the leg, is a true haven. But a word of advice: this hidden cove is also visited every day from around 11am by several large tour boats from nearby Aghios Nikolaos. Crowds of people then descend onto the tiny beach ‘en masse’ and all peace and serenity is lost for a few hours! Best to go either early in the morning, for your swim, and then leave as you see the boats approaching, or later in the afternoon (after 15.00) when they depart. Then there may be just a handful of people left and the beach is yours to enjoy once again. We took Lida’s advice here and did our sight-seeing in the morning before heading off to the beach later and taking to the sea in the afternoon (a 40 minute walk over the hill following the track, or a 5 minute drive up to the top then a 10 minute walk to down to the beach – you won’t see it until you are nearly upon it but trust the rough track and it will take you there directly; and it’s a bit uneven underfoot so wear sensible walking sandals/shoes).
Elounda itself is about 1.5 hours from Herakleion airport and you will need either to hire a car (we did, ‘Eagle Star’, as recommended by Lida, who were very accommodating and helpful supplying us with an automatic transmission, brand new, Peugeot hatchback at a very reasonable price – 170 euros for 5 days delivered to Elounda Island Villas on the day of our choice) or a taxi (around 80 Euros) – follow the ‘New Road’ heading towards Aghios Nikolaos. It was my first driving experience abroad and I found it quite alright – the roads being much better than friends who had visited Crete some years before had led me to believe, even in the mountains/hills; Google ‘Driving in Crete’ to get some handy tips. Knossos is also about 1.5 hours from Elounda (visit later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds). Lasithi Plateau is on your doorstep with some breath-taking views, the odd Eagle to spot if you’re lucky, the old traditional windmills for moving water (sadly now in some decay since the advent of mechanised pumps) and mountain villages where you can stop for a really nice lunch and of quite a high quality at a reasonable price. You can easily spend a day up on the plateau stopping to take in the views.
There are so many places to visit close to Elounda (including the deserted leper colony of Spinalonga – 10 Euros for the 30 minute boat trip from Elounda, then 2 Euros to pay on the Island, boats leaving every 30 minutes). Everywhere we went the local people were very friendly and ready to help if they could.
But above all, the reception of our host, Lida, made our holiday the experience is was – exceptional! Lida was attentive, helpful (great recommendations for local restaurants), and friendly at all times. The apartment was very comfortable, clean and very well maintained. Breakfasts and lunches at her taverna were of great quality and variety, with ‘specials’ of the day freshly made by her mother, and homemade ice cream (perfect late in the afternoon after a refreshing swim in the sea) to die for! And all locally-sourced food. This is a place we want to return to and will recommend to our friends.
