Like so many others, I visited Spinalonga after reading The Island and found it every bit as atmospheric as I'd hoped for. I do hope that the current popularity of the island as a tourist attraction, which has obviously been massively boosted by the book, doesn't encourage the authorities to go completely OTT with their renovations. It would be nice if a few more of the ruins were made safe enough for visitors to step inside, but I think it would be a shame if they destroyed the present atmosphere and imagery by trying to recreate the village as it was before it was abandoned in the 50's - a bit too much like "disney-fying" for my taste!
A few reviewers have mentioned that the organised trips didn't give them long enough to look around at their leisure. We bought tickets from the harbourside kiosk in Elounda - near the pigeon statue - and we were able to stay as long as we wanted and return on one of several different boats plying the route for a cost of 10 euros each for the boat ride, plus 2 euros each entrance fee on the island.
