Fantastic Holiday. We were there for a chill-out and this place ticked all the boxes. We arrived very late or rather early (2am) and grumpy after a flight delayed by an air-traffic control strike in Greece and a pretty uninspiring check-in process and flight from Thomson. (not sure we'd recommend the Thomson flights or particularly Luton airport)
Everything changed when we woke to the most fabulous view across the bay to the peninsular.
Our stay was brilliant from start to finish, Elounda has a fantastic, laid back atmosphere, lovely surroundings and something like 42 restaurants. Unfortunately we couldn't go to all of them (we had a pretty good attempt though!) but our favourites were The Ferryman and The Lotus Eaters, as much for the atmosphere and friendly staff as the fantastic food but we didn't have a bad meal anywhere. We also recommend Babels in town during the day for a coffee, beer or snack. They'll do a takeaway coffee to carry down to the beach.
The municipal beach in town was good and never crowded. There is a long walk to the other side of the peninsular to a really good beach for snorkeling. Get there early to grab a shady spot before the bbq boat trips arrive. A group of 18-30 booze cruisers arrived while we were there which made us a bit embarassed to be British!! You may want to get the kids to look away.
We did trips to Spinalonga (boat + bbq) and Ag. Nik (bus). If you were there for more than a week then car hire would be a good idea to explore the beautiful area.
Back to the hotel and it was the perfect location for us. A short and pleasant walk from town gave you a chance to walk off the food and meant it was pretty peaceful in the evening for a final cold glass of Mythos. The room was a good size and kept very clean every day (sheets and towels changed on the Wednesday)
Small but very clean pool. We didn't stay around the hotel in the day but it didn't look like there were any fights for the sunbeds.
The rooms are self-catering but not great if you want to do a lot of cooking as they have only two cooking rings and no grill. We were only interested in making coffee and chilling water and beer in the fridge/freezer though. I think one of the other guests 'borrowed' a toaster.
As mentioned previously, budget for an extra 50 euro for air-con. Well worth it as it was pretty hot while we were there.
The hotel has one of those undefinable qualities that isn't measured in room size etc.. and just has a fantastic atmosphere largely brought about by the staff there. The Thomson rep, Richard was around on site a lot and a really nice guy. We preferred do do our own thing but we could see he was very helpful and not pushy at all.
Particular thanks to Maria, Poppy and Jenny for a perfect stay.
