“not what was expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We asked for a balcony room but were told it may not be possible, so we ended up in a terrace block below the swimming pool. This had a very restricted view with the sea only being glimpsed here and there. The bed was on a wooden plinth only about 20 cms off the floor and was extremely hard. The electricity was worked by a key, therefore when we went out the fridge which was on the same circuit was turned off, so we never had cold drinks. The room lacked clothes storage space with only two small drawers and one shelf in the wardrobe. This shelf housed the safe which if you wanted to use it was charged at 2 euros a day. The usable room space of 2.40 meters x 1.60 meters was hindered by a large box low table of approx 80cms x 80cms so we were for ever dodging around this.
There was plenty of choice at the buffet for dinner but nothing was labelled, also food that was supposed to be hot was never more than warm. The burners or heat lamps they use are either inefficient or food is cooked and left too long before being placed on the buffet table. From past comments we were never aware that there is an a la carte menu. Dining room staff are overstretched but extremely pleasant, especially our waitress Risanthia.
It is stated that it is 1km to town, maybe this is to the first shop but to the actual centre where buses stop it is actually 3.4kms by the road in a car. It is possible to walk down the lane which will make it marginally shorter but this is unlight and not where I would like to walk at night.
The pool area is extremely well landscaped and pleasantly set out with outside dining area as well as the bar, but I would rather choose hot food and a comfortable room and bed.

Room Tip: Dont have our room 591 it is next to the pump room for the pool which is on from about 7.30am also t...

We booked a superior bungalow at the Elounda Palm. As per previous reviews, this was on the second floor. While there was plenty of room, it was spilt into two rooms, one bedroom and another with bunk beds! a fridge and a second TV and table. Not really what we were expecting.

The waitresses are very friendly and there was a good range of food available at lunch time which was very tasty and fresh. The house white wine was very nice and very reasonable at 3 Euros a glasss. The pool area was kept very clean, although there weren't enough pads for every sunlounger - there were only about 20 and most had been taken by other people early in the morning. They were also quite stained.

We went half board as we booked through a travel agent and this was the only option available. Unlike the lunches, we weren't overly impressed by the food at breakfast or the evenings. Our first night we arrived at 8.30 (dinner served until 9.30) and they were obviously very busy. However, when I approached one of the staff to ask where I should sit (there were spare tables, but had not been set) I was told by a guy quite gruffly that "it was diffcult". When I pressed him he said "sit anywhere". We had to sit for 10 minutes before someone laid the table and asked if we would like a drink. Not a great first impression. Unfortunately, the food was quite disappointing. We only ate there twice and chose to eat in Elounda on the other nights. It was all buffet and I am not a fan because the food sits there for quite some time - the veggies were pretty soggy. The food was pretty average and it wasn't always clear what was on offer so if you have allergies or are a vegetarian you will have to keep asking. At breakfast some of the fruit was under ripe and some of the fruit was tinned.

The location was good. Elounda is only a 15 minute walk. Simply turn right straight out of the hotel down the lane and keep walking. Go down the path alongside the road, past the taverna and then when the path stops and you can either go in front or behind the house on the corner take a right down the path. This goes past a children's play area and then turn left when you mean the causeway road. Keep going left along the front by all the restaurants. It's an easy walk if you don't have any mobility problems.

The public areas are very pleasant. There is a really nice lounge area and bar inside which have been done out very nicely, but the bar is not manned and nobody used it the whole time. Oddly the bedrooms haven't recieved the same treatment. I suspected from previous reviews that this may be the case and this wasn't our main holiday of the year so I wasn't overly disappointed. However, I can see why some people were. I think if you call yourself a boutique hotel and have rooms with private pools, people expect a certain level of accomodation and I don't think the Elounda really delivers this. If you want a more deluxe boutique hotel then I would try the Castello in Sissi. We stayed there last year and it was really lovely.

In general I felt the hotel was a bit of a hybrid. Part boutique in places (public areas) and part bog standard (food and rooms).

We have visited Crete on several occasions but this is the first visit to Elounda Palm and we were not disappointed. We wanted a very relaxed holiday with no sightseeing so decided not too hire a car, this was fine as a 20 minute walk took you into Elounda, you may find a torch handy for the last bit of the walk back at night.
The hotel accommodation was modern, bright, light and tastefully furnished and very comfortable. Much like a Boutique Hotel. They probably need to change the wording 'bungalow' as the sea facing 'bungalow' we booked was on the 3rd floor! We had an extremely large L shaped terrace which was very private, so we didn't complain.
The pool, poolside area and bar was great with lovely views across the bay to Spinalonga. Lots of lovely cocktails to tempt us and an excellent food menu. The pool bar staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The pool was cleaned thoroughly each day and was salt water.
Food in the dining room was plentiful at each mealtime, but honestly, we only had dinner there twice and I would recommend A La Carte in the evening as otherwise it is very repetitive and not to my taste. The 'catch of the day' was Sea Bream and as delicious as anywhere we ate!
All the staff were very friendly, the receptionist even went into Ag Nik to get me a charger for my Kindle! I don't think that would happen in any of the deluxe spa hotels.
Would definately recommend Elounda Palm and would return for another relaxing break!

Room Tip: The rooms with private pools - the pools are 5ft plunge pools! Much better views from upstairs room...

Loved this place - we arrived tired, pale and exhausted and left relaxed, tanned and revived. This is a lovely hotel with really nice friendly staff.. we stayed in a junior suite and enjoyed access to a pool shared only with two other suites. Most of the time we had the pool to ourselves and chose the privacy of spending our time here rather than by the main pool. The breakfasts were amazing and there was a great deal of choice. We did lunch a few times pool side but the bar and bar food was rather expensive compared to lunch in town just 10 mins walk away.. We rarely want to go anywhere twice as we like to explore new places but we'll definitly be returning to the Elounda Palm.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a junior suite if you can - a little away from the main pool and hotel area and ju...

We stayed as a family of 4 in the Senior Villa with its own private pool. Having stayed at various villas over the years in several resorts, this was the nicest villa we have ever had. True, it's more expensive than our usual villa but, when compared to others in Elounda, it was actually good value.

The internal space was huge, 2 big bedrooms, large comfortable beds, massive marble tiled bathrooms and plenty of storage space. It also had the benefit of air con throughout. Plus, the pool area on the terrace was fantastic, plenty of space, lots of seating and sun loungers, shade when you needed and brilliant views all around. The infinity pool was lovely and fresh, easily big enough for 4 of us. Slightly annoying was a 'buzzing' sound from the pool filter room located just below the villa - mainly because the door didn't close properly (a very minor point in all truth).

The villa was well appointed, the kitchen was small but modern but, in truth, we never had to cook once. Part of the hotel offer was to include half board for free so we had a massive breakfast each day (loads of choice) plus the option to eat in the evening as well. This took a lot of the usual additional hassle of previous villa holidays away - the search for supermarkets and the effort of cooking. It also allowed our budget to stretch to trying some of the restaurants in town for some variety. The bar area near the pool and dining area was also a very pleasant place to recline to after a meal. A relaxed atmosphere for families and couples.

In fact this had all the benefits of a villa holiday but with the bonus of hotel facilities. Rooms and pool were cleaned daily. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating, they really helped make our stay one of the most enjoyable holidays we've had, and our first in Crete. They always went the extra mile. Unexpectedly they allowed us a late check out which was a really nice gesture as we had a late evening flight so we were given use of the villa until 7pm at night - which was in effect an extra day's holiday.

We would happily return and recommend this hotel very highly.

Room Tip: Senior pool villa - pricey but worth it

Like most of the reviews on this site, we also found this to be a lovely little hotel. We arrived at midnight and were informed that there was water, fruit and a salad plate in the fridge in our room, which was most welcome. This attention to detail carried on throughout the holiday. The staff are professional and very helpful. The hotel is spotlessly clean. We upgraded to a "bungalow". This is hard to describe but its a row of rooms, set aside from the main hotel, a bottom row with private terraces leading out to the garden at the side of the pool. We were in the "upstairs" row above and had a very large private sun roof with sunbeds, chairs and coffee table. Be aware that Cretan beds are not your usual beds. Ours was a wooden base about a foot high with a mattress on top. The bathroom was small but had a large walk in shower which was great. The hotel has a seawater pool surrounded by sunbeds and an area to have lunch. Breakfast and dinner can be eaten either inside in the air con or outside on the terrace overlooking the pool. The food was plentiful and always fresh, lots to choose from, both at breakfast and dinner. The hotel is about a 25 minute walk from town. We always walked in but got a taxi back which was 5 Euros. If you decide to hire a car while on holiday, there is a good hire car company a few minutes walk down the lane at the side of the hotel. They will deliver the car to the hotel and pick it up at the end of the hire. They are very reasonable and its an all in price, no extras. We had a great holiday at the Elounda Palm.
