I ran away to Elounda Gulf villas in Crete for a relaxing four days with my husband. We loved the villas, and swam in our own pool every morning. We had a wonderful breakfast with Greek yogurt and fresh fruits, enjoyed the message and spa facilities, and visited many great local restaurants. I would highly recommend Elounda Gulf Villas for a 'long-short' break.

We returned to Crete (and Elounda Gulf Villas) this year after a four year break from the Greek Islands. We had originally visited Elounda Gulf Villas some ten years earlier when our daughter was just beginning to walk!

There’s something very special about Crete and as we made our way by taxi to the hotel (which the hotel reception had organised on our behalf) we pondered why indeed had we left it four years to return! On arrival we were greeted by those words every traveler relishes .. you have been upgraded! And Sure enough we were treated to an even better accommodation experience than we had expected. I’m sure this doesn't happen quite so often in the high season, but we were non the less very grateful.

The staff, service and accommodation at Elounda Gulf Villas is in my view excellent and we have (for comparison) stayed at several other so called up-scale hotels on the island.

We had, due to the dictate of school half term holidays taken this particular vacation right at the end of the season, so you might reasonably expect some level of service fatigue, but all the staff were exceptionally helpful and polite and nothing was too much trouble. Everyone had a smile to share. I would also say that the owner was present on most days checking to see that all was up to standard.

The dining facilities offered a good selection of foods for both breakfast and dinner and the service was always prompt. We had opted for bed and breakfast (usually preferring to eat out) but did use the restaurant in the evening on a couple of occasions and the food was of a good standard.

The weather during our stay was abnormally wet, but this didn't stop us enjoying a very relaxing break and we will certainly be returning.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for taking the time to write your review and thank you so much for your positive comments in relation to our hotel, services and facilities.

We were all delighted to welcome you and your family back after so many years. We always do our best to offer upgrades to our honored returning guests and we are more than happy that we could do this for you. Many thanks for the great comments you made regarding our staff, service and dinning options. Also note that our hotel is indeed family owned and run and, as you mention, most of the days - if not always- a family member is at the Hotel, meeting the guests and checking that everything runs smoothly, offering a personalised service. Of course as you have experienced, there is a professional team behind the family.

Once again we thank you very much for your great review on your half term holiday with us. We look forward to welcome you and your family back and give us the chance to hit the mark and offer an even more seamless experience, hopefully with more sunny days,

Best Regards
Charitini Kadianakis

My husband and I, with two friends, stayed in a three bedroom villa with a private pool last week to celebrate my 50th birthday and our 20th wedding anniversary. The view was breathtaking and the villa was decorated beautifully and very comfortable. We couldn't stop taking pictures of everything from the Villa walkways, to the beautiful restaurant patio and our unbelievable pool view. We all woke up at dawn the first morning to take photos of the sunrise...too excited to sleep! It was like a dream. So much to say so I will bullet point:
- Maria and Eleftheria (and all staff) were friendly, accommodating and funny. We loved talking to them, getting tips and advice. Any request was taken care of immediately and down to every detail. They make you feel like family.
- We spent a lot of time at the bar with Twylam, the lovely bartender. Again, so friendly with interesting conversation and always accommodating. She makes delicious signature cocktails with all sorts of herbs and spices. Definitely tell her what you like and have her mix up one of her concoctions! She makes a twist on a Mojito that is to die for.
- The breakfast spread every morning was vast and delicious. We would make coffee in our villas, then head down to the restaurant. So relaxing sitting by the pool and eating a nice big breakfast (only recommendation would be to mix up the hot egg and vegetable dishes so there was a little more variety day to day).
- In our villa, we had any request attended to so quickly it was almost comical. We loved the 'Pillow Menu' and took full advantage of requesting feather pillows for our beds.
- Pool was a bit cold but we liked it that way since the sun was so hot. Could not heat the jacuzzi which was disappointing because that would have been heaven at night when it's a bit chillier.
- The larger villas with private pools (and best views) are higher up, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes. I brought some higher heels but never wore them. We liked the exercise but the stairs and hills would be challenging for the elderly or for babies in strollers. However, the staff was at the ready with golf carts to bring you up and down if necessary. We had friends who stayed in a one bedroom suite, further down towards the restaurant and it was just as spacious and elegant as the Villas. They relaxed by the big pool and said it was very quiet and the staff would bring fresh fruit out to the guests periodically.
- We ate dinner once at the hotel restaurant which was good, but the village of Elounda had many restaurants, bars and shops to choose from. We walked in during the day but took cabs at night. Twylam would call them for us at the bar, and again, they were there within minutes. 7 euros for one way trip. And if you wanted to go to Agios Nikolaos (great shopping and restaurants...bigger city and more high end) it was 12 euros one-way.
- Restaurant recommendation: The Ferry Man (ate there twice) where the owner sits and tells you what to order...goat dish, eggplant dish and homemade bread were memorable. Fun bar (at Twylam's recommendation) was Friends. Both in Elounda.
- We did the boat tour to Spinalonga Island from Plaka which was shorter and less 'touristy' than from Elounda. The tour of the leper colony was interesting. Again, challenging for walking and climbing so good shoes are required. You can also swim from here, which we did not know, so bring bathing suits and food if you want to stay longer.
- For exercisers, if you look out from the hotel you will see the Spinalonga Peninsula. Walk to town and cut back to the shore front restaurants where you can cross a bridge to the Peninsula. Hike up the hill (can go by car but it's a good hike with lots of walkers and bikers). There is a cute little church on the top of the mountain, then you can hike down the back to a small white beach for swimming. Great exercise and hike. Come back and reward yourself with lunch in town.
All in all, a fantastic trip. I will recommend the Elounda Gulf Villas again and again. I'm still sad that I can't look out my window and see the Mediterranean again. Someday....

Room Tip: We stayed in the Arretii Villa (three bedroom, 3 bath and private pool). Gorgeous. Higher rooms/vi...

We stayed here the first week of September in the truly magnificent "Driros" 1 bed deluxe spa pool villa. From the moment you arrive you are wowed. The villa itself is extremely spacious, the pool is large with a spacious terrace. As this villa is located at the top of the resort it is very private and tranquil. We found the pool temperature to be very pleasant. The view from the terrace is stunning and when swimming in the pool it feels like your swimming out to sea!
The villa was beautifully decorated with everything you could need inside and out.
The staff are amazing, genuinely friendly and nothing is too much.
Anna the owner and her family ensure they are always at the property chatting to guests and making sure everyone has a warm welcome and the perfect stay.
We found the food excellent with lots of choice and very reasonably priced. The room service was excellent and works so well when you don't want to leave the serenity of your villa!
We arranged a private boat trip through reception to explore Spinalonga Island and then off to a private bay for a swim and a delicious picnic organised by reception.
I would certainly recommend this property and thank them for such a memorable stay.

Room Tip: Villa Driros best views, private and very romantic. Ideal for honeymooners
