“Casual, friendly taverna with fresh inexpensive food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

My husband and I stopped here several times while walking to Plaka. We really enjoyed meeting the owner....he was very friendly and remembered us each time we walked by. We loved the tomato balls and tzatziki....also the fried dougnuts with honey were amazing!! Great casual spot!

“Overlooking Spinalonga”

Lovely fresh food, happy Michael helping you with the menu and the freshest fish (from their own boat) that you will get on the island.

“A first class family business with traditional Greek charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

We stayed at the Blue Palace hotel for a week in May on B&B basis. We found the standard of food at the hotel to be closer to three star standard than five star and therefore not particularly good value for money. Luckily Plaka is a convenient and scenic 10 minute stroll away from the hotel.

Taverna Gorgona is the first restaurant you come to if you enter the town along the shoreline as opposed to the main through road. It is one of several eating establishments by the harbour; the others actually looked fine but we never ended up trying them as we took previous visitor advice on TA and went to straight to Taverna Gorgona – we were certainly not disappointed.

On the first visit we were met by the owner and his wife. – we were told that she does most of the cooking and their family boats catch most of the fish they serve. They were really pleasant and we were shown an extensive menu (in many languages) and also taken in and shown the catch of the day – a range of fresh fish and shellfish. We ordered a lot of food the first day (possibly too much) – the greek salad was huge and came 'undressed' and there was olive oil (the family's own) and vinegar on the table so you could dress it to your own liking, also the greek appetiser plate for two as it seemed to cover everything we wanted to try, – it turned out there was nothing on it that was not simply delicious – all freshly made and hot (and very filling, but too good to leave). The cheese and spinach pies were particularly yummy and I even got some 'to go' the day we left. We also had lobster as it was the Mediterranean spiny lobster with no claws (as opposed to the other kind with big claws) which I had never had before – this was grilled and served up with some sweet garlic butter – you couldn't beat the taste, the atmosphere and the view.

On the second day we met Michael – the nephew – he was so friendly, helpful and efficient and always remembered our names. Not a big deal, but you definitely got a sense of traditional family values here. We visited this place several times over the week and tried many other things and were never disappointed. Unsurprisingly the Greek and seafood dishes were by far the best, and I think very traditional.

The amazing thing was, despite the extensive menu, everything came out freshly cooked, hot and in good time no matter how busy it was. If you are lucky enough to be visiting Plaka, definitely go here (and bring a good appetite), the service and food are outstanding and you always get little 'extras' before and after the meal. Good food as well as a memorable experience – this place is definitely good value for money!

“Fabulous Fish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

We are regular visitors to Crete but this was our first trip into Plaka.
The Gogona had been recommended to us by the Manager at our Apts so we decided to give it a try.
We were greated by a friendly waiter and we were seated in a lovely spot ,on the shaded veranda ,overlooking Spinalonga.
Bread arrived quickly with our chilled beers but we were undecided on what to eat as the Menu is quite extensive ..... the waiter suggested that we go into the Kitchen to choose our Fish.
We quickly settled on a large Bream that we were advised would be large enough for two (so no sneaky buy two advice :). )
We settled down at our table and enjoyed the beer and views.
When the fish arrived it was perfectly grilled and a new , younger ,waiter took the fish off the bone for us and we dived into the veg.
How was it? Perfect. Absolutely great..... The bill didn't hurt either as they had weighed the Bream in front of us and asked if the price was OK before we ordered it..
So Great service...Great Food .....in a fantastic location !
We are back to Crete this June and will Definately be paying this charming Restaurant another visit.

“Crete forever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

Gorgona is one of the few places we visit year after year. A purely family-run taverna with Yiannis managing the service with a professional but personalised manner, Rena in the kitchen and the sons helping out. The location is stunning, over the port and across Spinalonga, a view to remember forever. The decor is quite traditional, simple and tasteful. The menu has the usual seaside taverna options, all few items prepared by Rena as they would be in her place. Simple but tasty and cooked to perfection. Fresh local fish and seafood is complemented by a few mezedes and the necessary meat options. A few local wines are available to suit all needs in this level and there is often a home-made dessert. The prices are what you would expect in Plaka. Cannot say it’s a bargain but once you are not carried away by the always pricey premium fish, it’s very affordable. Don’t miss the dolmadakia!
