Taxi – We paid £69 each way for a taxi and would do it again, even at that price as one couple had a 4 hour coach transfer as they were the last ones off.
Location – We estimate about 1 mile (ish) from Elounda along a nice and quite well paved path and about 2 or 3 miles from Plaka. Beware the steep slope up to the apartments, can be a bit of a struggle after a hot walk. We walked to Plaka a few times during our two weeks, it was a hot walk but lovely views all along the way.
Beaches – didn’t try the town beach but noticed it had showers and toilets, plus as it’s right in town, loads of shops/tavernas etc. There are more beaches on the way to Plaka, again didn’t try them, they are small but looked quite nice.
Plaka beach has large pebbles and it is difficult to walk on and get in and out of the sea – it caused us fits of laughter each time as we were flailing about, trying to stay upright. It can get really windy there and sometime sunbeds were seen flying about the beach – we were both hit by them, so just be careful, especially with children. We loved it there.
Money – we noticed at least 2 ATM’s in Elounda, the one we used always had money but would only allow withdrawals of 300 euros a time (we were charged quite a lot by our bank each time)
We found we spent a lot less than in Rhodes last year – the main courses we had were between 6 and 14 euros depending on if it’s just a vegetable dish like stuffed peppers or more expensive dish like prawns (which were wonderful). We didn’t have a bad meal.
Accommodation – it’s one of the best places we’ve ever stayed. Were disappointed we weren’t allocated a high floor as requested but that’s just luck of the draw. We loved our room which had a view of the sea if one peered in between the olive trees – other apartments had fantastic views, incredible for the price. The apartment was cleaned regularly by cheerful Anna. We had a large room with a full size fridge/freezer – handy for all the water bottles.
Bathroom was fine, had a bath with shower attachment.
Warning – don’t come here if you want luxury, it is definitely Greek style (which is what we love)
We didn’t have aircon or a fan at the end of August and I slept so well. We were lucky that our apartment had a mozzie screen so we could just leave the doors open at night (and during the day as it felt safe)
Elounda was lovely, loads of fishing boats line the harbour, there are more than enough shops and tavernas to keep you busy for two weeks. Can’t say about the bars as we didn’t bother as we made our own cocktails in the room before and after going for dinner.
Pool – it is tiny and if you get a family like we had for our first week then it’s virtually unusable as they monopolised it. However, during the 2nd week it was a lot quieter round the pool and so it was a nice place to relax and chat to other guests – the view is beautiful of the bay and Spinalonga. It’s got sea water in it, I didn’t like the idea before I’d tried it but in fact it was lovely, really buoyant.
Oh yes, Spinalonga – the Olympic trip would cost something like 30 euros, which includes a bbq. We caught a boat from Elounda for 10 euros each.
I’d better stop writing now as I could go on forever – we have never gone back to the same apartments twice but we would here !
