“Loved it !!!! Missing you Tina x x x”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2009

Me and Mum arrived early in the morning to find no rep waiting to show us where the hotel was. Thanks Thomas Cook. Luckily with Trip Advisor and Google Earth I had an idea. So walked down road on our own at 5am to find key in door. Rooms lovely. Basic but clean. It's Greece! Everythings basic. All I was bothered about was a clean cool room which it was. Got up in the morning and went to welcome meeting which was ok. Rep apologised for 'missing' us and so we got the air conditiong control and the safe key (45 euros for both for a week) and then went for a walk. The walk to Elounda's harbour is about 10 mins at a stroll. Either by the sea or on the road past the shops. Fantastic. Lots of traverna's nearby. You must go to Plaka (take the little train) and Spinalonga. Amazing place. Also, even though it's a long way go to Knossos. Brilliant.
The apartments had a salsa night on Saturday which was fantastic. BBQ and drinks with salsa lessons. Tina, Costas and Zak really know how to make you feel at home and nothing was ever too much trouble.
I will agree that becuase anyone can use the pool we did get some horrid kids in (one little devil in particular) but all of Greece is like this so I don't see it fair to blame the apartments. Plus the kid was english (so embarrassing to admit that).
All in all if you want to relax, have fun and see the true Greece then stay here. Get to know everyone and you'll feel like one of the family.
Missing you Tina, see you soon.

Just returned from a week long trip to the Hiona appartments in Elounda. We booked through Thomas Cook on a lastminute deal on the basis of the reviews on Tripadvisor and have to wonder why this place gets such good reviews. We arrived at the customary late hour (arrived at 5am) after having been flown in from Manchester with the party crowd heading for nearby Malia (indecently, Malia appears to have taken over from Agia Napa and Faliraki after the Greek authorities cracked down on loutish behaviour there. To see the lovely review the sort of people you'll be on board you 4 hour flight to Heraklion with: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1040733/Sex-drugs-booze-violence-Welcome-Malia-party-resort-serving-lethal-holiday-cocktail-young-Brits.html). As we were exhausted and annoyed at having to share the flight with a group of people with a collective I.Q. of about 10 we tried to get some sleep, an extremely difficult thing to do in a room with no air-conditioning, the sun just coming up and the temperature approaching 30 degrees. We eventually managed to get an a/c remote control from the guy cleaning the pool at about 9am and managed to get some sleep. Upon finally waking, we found the room to be very basic, even by Greek standards (no shower curtain, no TV), and not massively clean as others on this site have stated (kitchenette area and equipment was really grubby, the bathroom tiles/sink/toilet all stained and in need of a proper clean), additionally the room was only cleaned once very 2 days, not really enough. The major problem at this hotel is, however the poor organisation. There is no reception area, and a lack of anyone to direct questions to, one evening all of the electricity in the block went out, and I had to go to the next door hotel to seek help. Another night a group of local rowdies occupied the pool area, keeping everyone awake until the small hours, again nobody was seen to remove them.

The pool area is nice enough, but seems to be the main focus of the management’s attention. Indeed, the open access to all and sundry in Elounda causes problems if, as in our case a group of 15 people with all of their kids decided to descend on the pool, order 1 coffee between them and feel justified in letting their 10 kids, replete with inflatables occupy the (not massive) pool for the whole day. We did not make it to the “Mamma Mia” night on the Saturday of our stay – not really our thing, but all of the staff apparently did, ensuring that the hotel bar area didn’t open until late in the afternoon after allowing the haze of hangovers to clear, more of an annoyance than a major issue, but still smacks of bad management. If you have an early morning flight, there is no provision for storing bags (no reception area), or having a clean-up before your flight home. You will be faced with the unenviable situation of a 12pm checkout and then having to drag your bags around with you until the coach picks you up in the same clothes you’ve been in all day, for your flight home. The location is fine, easy walk into town, some great Tavernas, near to the local municipal beach, great for snorkelling. I would recommend looking at the other hotels in Elounda as they appear to be run more efficiently, and there may even be someone on hand to help you if you need some help with anything.

My mum was one of the Hiona 8 in May this year and just couldn`t wait until next year to go back , so took myself and my 15 yr old daughter 3 weeks later!!!!
The hospitality at the Hiona is fantastic. As soon as I arrived I felt relaxed. In an enviable position, right by the water`s edge, the apartments are small and very friendly The beach is a one minute stroll.
All the staff are great. Jessica makes you feel so welcome and her cooking is to die for (her homemade chips are fabulous). She made me vegetable moussaka and it was fantastic!!!!!!! Tina organises a weekly themed evening, great atmosphere, just sorry I missed the Mama Mia evening a week before.
The view from our balcony was awesome, especially the glorious sunrise. Rooms are typically Greek (quite basic) and cleaned almost every day by Rita, who is fabulous. The pool is small but beijos and cleaned regularly.
Restaurants are close by and bars and tavernas just in the village(5 minutes approx).Locals are friendly and honest and always manage a smile.
The weather was fantastic every day with a welcome breeze to cool you down.
Would recommend the Hiona to anyone who, like me, needed to unwind and de-stress due to the location and all the staff incuding Jessica, Zac,Tina,Rita,Costas,Ben and not forgetting Beau. Give him a kiss from me x

I've left comments on the Crete - Elounda - Hiona Apartments Forum http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189416-i937-k2453889-o10-Hiona_Apartments_Elounda-Elounda_Crete.html but want to comment on here too. I totally agree with everything that has been said on the reviews re the Hiona. It is superb, nothing is too much bother and we would go back tomorrow if we could. The friends we made in May (you know who you are and great to have made email contact with you all since we all came home - including Jessica, Zak and Tina! x!) made it even more wonderful. We will be back next year for sure but please don't tell too many people how good it is or we might have trouble getting booked!

We have visited Elounda four times now over the last five year and have enjoyed a great holiday on each occasion. We stayed at Maria Stella apts. near the main square. They were clean and well cared for but like most apts in Greece they are quite basic, No toaster etc., The flower garden was extremely pretty. Mr George takes great pride in his flowers. We usually stay nearer to the Hiona pool bar and would, in fact, have booked to stay there had we realised that Jessica and Zak were back! They are fantastic people, so friendly and good hearted. Nothing is too much trouble. We enjoyed the Mama Mia and Salsa nights, both were a good laugh. Zaks barbecued food is wonderful and there is always plenty of it.. Great value. I would add that there always seems to be a nice crowd of people either staying at Hiona or dropping in for food and drinks. It must be due to the terrific welcome that everyone gets from Jessica and Zak. We look forward -very much to our return. See you soon. Liz & Chris (Lager and a Retsina)
