“Outstanding holiday experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

Beautiful setting, extremely helpful stadf and excellent accommodation - we couldn't have asked for more from our one week holiday in early April 2013. Weather can be unpredicatble but we were fortunate. However, there is so much to see with an inexpensive local car hire, you can be thrilled by the Greek hospitality. Very good value and a outstanding experience.

Room Tip: A sea view is probably worth paying a little extra for

We actually found this hotel by accident and just walked in to check the availability as we were driving to Elounda.

This was their opening week so we got a good price for a seaview bungalow comprised of a livingroom and a séparate bedroom, two balconies.

The view is great and the architecture/design of the hotel complex is well thought of.It is on sloping hill going down to the sea and the hotel is build by level with bungalows following that slope so that everyone can have a view. There are also some garden view and regular hotel rooms in the main building.

There are pools with seaview and various places for the longchairs at various levels all the way to the sea. There is a small pepples beach but if you are looking for a large or sandy beach, this is not it. The last leval is at sea level with a very large area for longchairs.

The restaurant has breakfast buffet , same as most big hotel. Dinner is also buffet, we did not try it as it did look too basic. Maybe because they were just opening, instead we went to Agios Nikolaus and Plaka.

Plaka is very small village but it is higher on the mountain and has a fantastic view of the bay. There are 6-7 restaurants on the side of the small cliffs with that great view.

We ate lunch at the hotel. The prices are on the high side, ( 12€ for a club sandwich) but this is a 5 stars. For those who are coming on all inclusive package, there is 2 price in all menu and rooms service or minibar; a regular and the premium all inclusive with 25-30% discount. So read carefuly what is really incuded in your package.

The staff is super friendly and alway concerned about your need. This is Crete hospitality at his best. This is a couple only resort.

Room Tip: Take a seaview bungalow if you can, it is worth it.

aquila elounda is the nearest you would get to the top of the world in the mediterranean. The hotel is exquisite, the surroundings views breath taking, the facilities wide and good, the service impeccable, and the food - oh, the food - the best there is outside 5 star restaurants.
A perfect resort and place for a reasonably priced holiday which gives much more than just value for money.

Room Tip: if you can afford it - go for the seaview rooms. what a feast!

We had a lovely time staying at the Aquila Elounda and if you are looking for a place to catch some sun, rest and relax then this place meets that brief very well. If you are looking for fantastic 5 star service as well then I am not sure that you would find it here. Just a few little tweaks here and there would make this hotel excellent - only me being picky but having had some great experiences elsewhere I know it can be done!

The transfer time from the airport was not as long as we were expecting as the new road had opened and this made a real difference. Welcome at the hotel was superb, with a lovely drink provided whilst we waited to check in. Our room was on the small side but perfectly formed. Robes, slippers and toiletries all of good quality. One really good thing provided was a little bag for your beach/pool towels, which I thought was an excellent idea.

We stayed on a half-board basis and I thought the food was of very good quality, with lots of variety. Drinks were rather expensive though, a bottle of water and 2 soft drinks every night with dinner came to a fair amount and if you like to share a bottle or two over dinner you might want to consider the All inclusive (AI). Although having had a couple of excellent AI experiences recently I thought the deal offered at the Aquila was certainly not AI, with additional charges on an awful lot of drinks and extras. Be prepared to take extra cash with you! I was glad that we had not done this as I thought the additional charges were excessive. One criticism I would have was the service in the restaurant, which became tiresome in the end - waiting to be taken to a table, getting someones attention was tricky when you were seated, taking a long time for drinks to arrive, having to re-order and so on.

We had one meal at one of the restaurants (this was included and you had to book this up beforehand), which was lovely. Service here was better than the usual restaurant however still not in the excellent range.

A wonderful part of this hotel was the relaxing area by the sea overlooking one of the most beautiful views ever - it was really peaceful and the perfect place to chill out with lovely comfortable sunbeds. I love swimming in the sea and snorkeling and both of there were fantastic. We didn't get the chance to go on a boat trip on the hotel's catamaran (we had a few windy days there and couldn't manage to get on one of the trips) but again, this was a wonderful addition and other guests were impressed with this offer.

One particular issue we had was with the 'sunbed police' - and this holiday will forever be know for this! Some mornings we would sit and read from early on, have a swim and then get back to our sunbeds to find our belongings removed. We felt forever 'on watch' whilst swimming to ensure that we didn't lose our beds. It got silly, where other people didn't go off for a drink together for fear of having belongings removed. Eventually guests were asking each other to look after each other's beds whilst they swam or nipped up to rooms etc. I should say that I absolutely agree with the principle of having a sunbed policy to stop people reserving beds and not turning up for hours however it was how it was implemented that I had the problem with. The rep had told us that if we spoke to the beach chap then he would not remove belongings but the one day we did he was clear that if we left our beds then our stuff would be removed. I raised this again with the rep as I felt she needed to be aware of our experience with this. I hope that the hotel finds a way of implementing this policy more effectively in the future so that guests feel able to relax around the bathing area. Another issue in this area was exchanging dirty towels - the cupboard was locked and no one around to supply clean ones.

We walked into town a couple of times but it is a fair distance - taxi back was about 8 euros. We had one meal at the Ferryman and I would recommend this, we waited for a table but it was well worth it. The friendly welcome was typically Greek and the food was superb. We sat on the harbour front watching the moon rise - a perfect holiday moment.

A couple of other things with the hotel - the little shop on site had a good variety of stock and was not overly expensive. The entertainment team offered a lot (most of it is not really my thing) but every day they were in the water doing water aerobics etc and I did try the yoga, which was very good. The spa was lovely but the gym was very small, with little equipment and incredibly hot! We booked a trip through the rep to Knossos and Iraklion, which was excellent value with a highly knowledgeable guide.

All in all I would say that we had a really good break at the Aquila, the few issues we had did not spoil our time but I doubt very much if I would return based on my experience. I would not rate this hotel as a 5 star, it just about manages a 4 in some areas, however if you do choose the Aquila you will have a lovely break.

We travelled in June 2012, and originally had a garden room as nothing else was available with tour operator. Upgraded to a swim up room with shared pool, and was fantastic.
Staff very helpful, friendly and lovely. Can't comment on entertainment as we didn't see much of it. Food was really good with baklava every day - a girls best friend!!!
The pools were varying sizes along our shared stretch, but you could stay in your own little bit or swim in the whole shared bit.
Just what we wanted for a relaxing week in the sun.

Room Tip: stayed in 404, 401 has better pool and view

We had rented the best room with private pool. The view from the terrace of our room was fantastic. Even the walkway to go to the room was something memorable. I can close my eyes and see it again.

The taxi drivers were on strike, so we had to walk to Elounda one day, but It was a good walk and the streets are not so busy there.

Room Tip: Rooms with private or shared pool are the best.
