We have just returned from a family holiday in Crete and were quite pleasantly surprised at how Un-English and peaceful the Santa Marina was.
I stuck to my criteria when selecting a hotel but during August expected it to be much busier.
The hotel is located along a strip of road with low rise Taverna, beach shops, car hire & tourist facilities, which surprised us as we had the impression that it was in a village! They are quite useful shops in the end for drinks/lilos etc, but not very Crete.
The hotel and private beach however was a little bit of an oasis amongst the tourist outlets. The buffet meals were very good with a big choice and lots of salads. The rooms very clean and cool, all with good sized balconies. The public areas all very attractive, clean and cool. The outside terraces, pool bar, lounge areas-all very lovely. The pool was clean and never crowded, very enjoyable.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Santa Marina Beach but I do think they could have had the odd barbeque on the beach view terraces, or a games room for the evenings, as it is very quiet after dinner.
We hired a Jeep for 3 days which enabled us to get out of the resort and up into the fantastic mountains and on to other beaches, but it was too hot to do any other sightseeing apart from one evening in Chania (which was further away from the hotel than I expected). Chania was lovely but too hot and too crowded in August.
Would I go back to Crete...no, not in August but yes to the hotel!
