“Heart of Downtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Location is #1. Noisy overlooking the square but very quiet when the patio door is closed. Easy to walk around downtown for the shops and restaurants and sightseeing. Wonderful staff, helpful and courteous. Rooms and hotel are clean. Breakfast buffet is good and plentiful. Two complaints: parking difficult and beds are way too hard and uncomfortable.

We found this hotel to be very much like a UK Travel Lodge or Premier Hotel. Not much in the way of facilities but spotlessly clean and comfortable.

We had a room two floors up at the front of the building with a balcony overlooking the 1866 Square and although it is very busy traffic-wise, once the balcony door was closed it shut out nearly all of the noise (note that up until a couple of years ago we had 40 thousand vehicles a day passing the front of our house, so anything less than that is quiet). Some people (who were roomed at the back of the building said that it was noisy there, but we didn't go to investigate that so only have their word for it. However, because the floors are all tiled anyone walking about in the corridors or the room above hours wearing high heeled shoes, or pulling a wheeled suitcase around did intrude somewhat.

In our room we had a double bed and a single bed, so it would have slept 3 people if necessary. Air-conditioning was provided, but we didn't need to use it during our stay, so we can't really comment on it's efficiency. There was a refrigerator, tea/coffee making equipment, a hair dryer and a small safe all included in the room price. Wi-fi was available free and if required there were 2 internet set-ups that were free to use in the lounge area.

The shower room/toilet was small and very compact, but perfectly adequate for what is required of it.

A continental type breakfast was included in the price. Coffee, tea or hot chocolate for those that wanted it. An orange juice machine was provided that would squeeze fresh oranges straight into your glass. Cereal, boiled eggs, sliced meat, bread, butter, jam, etc. plus some fresh fruit was there for the taking.

All of the members of staff were very friendly and helpful. Ask and they would do their utmost to get you the right answer.

There is a limited amount of garage space for anyone who has a hire-car -- parking is limited throughout the city and traffic wardens do the rounds if you should park in the wrong place.

Modern, comfortable, unpretentious, superbly situated and with the most pleasant and helpful staff you'll ever find anywhere (plus the best breakfast), this hotel would take a lot of beating. It's handy to everything--especially if you're travelling by public transport as it is only a block and a half from the bus station. We had two brief stays here, on the way to and from other parts of Crete, plus on the last day we rented a day room so that we'd have somewhere to rest for a few hours before catching the ferry. Highly recommended.

The Arkadi Hotel is central to the bus station, market and a short walk from the old town and Venetian harbour. We arrived at Souda Bay on an Anek ferry at 6AM. We knew that a city bus ran frequently to the city of Hania. However, it was cold, wet and actually raining when we arrived at the hotel entrance around 7AM. We were greeted warmly by the night manager and invited in to wait in a spacious lounge with comfy chairs and couches until our room became available. We were also invited to have coffee and a very well presented and breakfast of various local fare. When the day manager arrived, she did some swapping and managed to put us in a very nice room soon after 8AM. You can imagine how relieved and grateful we were to get ourselves in to a very comfortable room. All the staff are multilingual and we have never been treated better anywhere. We do travel a lot having been all around Crete, southern Italy, Sardegna, Spain and Sicily.
I don’t believe a hotel has to be brand new and luxurious to receive the highest rating.

The Arkadi is a first-rate family-run hotel in the centre of Chania, just a short walk from the Venetian harbour, the bus station and all amenities. All the multi-lingual staff I have met have been extremely attentive, friendly, helpful and courteous. The air-conditioned rooms are very clean and comfortable with excellent facilities. I have visited Chania several times a year for the past 6 years for both business and leisure trips, I have stayed at the Arkadi each time with absolutely no complaints. I have sometimes had to catch the first early morning flight from Chania (6am) the hotel has opened its kitchen and dining room just for me for breakfast at 4:30am!
For a business user, the hotel provides excellent WiFi and the use of desktop pc's and printers for guests. Combining all this with the beautiful views to be seen from the rooms' terraces of the harbour and the old town, especially at night, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to all visitors to Chania.

Room Tip: I prefer the 5th floor with terraced views across Chania and the Harbour. At night with the various...

The old fashioned features of Arkadi only add to its charm. My room was spacious with comfortable bed, fridge and ensuite with thick towels. The breakfast was huge! The hotel is in a prime location near bus station, harbour and attractive shops.

The Arkadi hotel is situated at walking distance from the Venetian port. The roms are old fashioned and only have standard equipment, but are clean. Also the breakfast is very basic. I stayed on the top floor in a room with a nice terrace and view over the old town and the sea. There was WiFi all over the hotel.
The staff was very friendly and helpfull.
