“A delightful open street market”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

An old street which is every saturday filled with merchants that come from everywhere -- even from the mountains around -- to sell what they collect from their lands. You'll find almost everything (even the small fishes gávros): but a local friend advised me not to buy cheese or yoghurt, for safety, healthy reasons... Apart from that, you can have everything, from olive oil to flowers (even those from aubergine that you can cook filled with rice), to parsley, from fresh beatiful tomato to oregano. A very lively place, with friendly merchants. A must, if you are in Chania or near by.

“Going to market is shopping too”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

There are many things to see and do in Chania but a market is a must see for us and will not leave you out of pocket. Here you can buy honey, oil, olives, herbs and spices as well as the usual food items, clothes, bags and beads. Some of the traders will generously give you cubes of bread to dip into the different honeys or try the olives and the olive oil and engage you in conversation. There were also samples of fruit and nuts. Here you can buy a variety of olive oil or honey that is not available in the touristy shops. I discovered a herb I have not seen anywhere else: Dittany with a taste of oregano and dry hay with the effectiveness of camomile-like healing properties.

“Local culture being overshadowed by tourist tat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

The more local parts of this market are fascinating - butchers with skinned sheep's heads, tiny little bakeries - but sadly the tourist tat and fake RayBans seem to be taking over.
Worth a walk though, and a poke around in the more traditional shops and stalls, but if you're anything like me you might be frustrated by the plastic and gaudily-wrapped soaps drowning out the true Cretan market.

“Neat Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

Walk through this market and enjoy the senses of Crete. If you are from a land far away, you will appreciate the smells and sights of the local people. Of particular interest are the food stalls. Lovely bakeries, delicatessens, meat and fish stores and spice shops.

“Authentic (or as close to a tourist trap can be) Marketplace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

Worth a quick stop a browse through the many stores in the marketplace. Many stores catering to tourists with olive oil, cheap jewelry, etc., but many stands with great pastries to enjoy that are very reasonably priced. Have the standard people/young children around asking for money, but they weren't overly agressive.
