“Not my thing, but great for those with specialist interests”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

At just 2 euros for entry, this is definitely worth seeing (and a great place to escape the midday heat if you don't fancy napping!)
I learned a lot about Crete's history, which was more interesting than I realised. The collection of maritime memorabilia will appeal to those who love the sea, and lovers of history can see scale models re-enacting famous battles and read about the details in broken but perfectly understandable English.

“maritime museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

If you get chance while in chania, visit this place,so full of history and you could spend half a day in here easy.
Normanally my wife would go shopping while I would go round these sort of places on holiday, but she decided to come in with me and she really enjoyed it,and at 3 euros each a bargain.
So much history and a whole section devoted to the second world war relating to crete and there involvement in that war, complete with videos on that and other maritime related history.
Simply a must visit in chania.

“Interesting Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

My husband wanted to go to this museum and when we first walked in I was a little skeptical. As we walked through, they had so many artifacts to look at. It was nice to see history through a different lens after visiting quite a few archeological sites on our trip.

“Educational especially for kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

The main attraction in this museum in Chania old town harbour has to be the replica Minoan sailing vessel. You can learn how the Minoans constructed their vessels without any of the tools we take for granted today and there is a raised walkway so you can see inside the boat along with a video film detailing how the modern reconstruction was made and tested at sea with a crew. There are other exhibits in the museum and plenty of reading for the interested adult. I would recommend an hours visit for anyone and longer for serious history buffs

“An informative narrative to the modern history of Crete.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

This is a very well laid out museum, which has all information displayed in both Greek and English. The sections on the history of Greek naval and merchant marine are well laid out. The section on the 1912-13 Greek Ottoman conflict was enlightening. Finally the section on the WW2 Battle for Crete was fascinating, so near and so far away. A section giving details on locations of German and Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries would be useful.
