The Ammos...Chania's best.
NIkos more than deserves credit for creating the perfect little hotel on the beautiful beach at Agios Apostolli (7 km west of Chania). The Ammos is a stylish little hotel designed in the most tasteful way...everything from the furniture, light fittings, bathrooms and decor touches show the ownership has a keen eye for design, colour and comfort. The hotel is small, and neither a boutique nor mass-market type chain. It is homey while being professional; and exudes a relaxed calm that is perfect for a holiday. The taverna on site, is subcontracted to a local entrepreneur who's recipes and cooking are equal to the best taverna/restaurants in athens.
The pool is small, and in June - August over run with babies/floats so we hear, which is why if you are looking for a place to holiday with children (or, young babies) it seems the Ammos is a perfect choice. However, if you are not child-friendly on your holidays..book for May or September. Even if you do go in 'high kid season' - the families are all northern european (mostly scandinavian/german/british) and many are on 'tour packages' booked for the week. You can always decide where to lounge in the sun...on the beach, by the pool or at one of the several local beaches nearby. So, you can always escape the pool area.
The beach lounges and pool lounges are metal frame/w canvas and sturdy; the palm/thatch umbrellas provide shade; and if not - the restaurant has beach/pool service for a regular glass of beer or Cafe Frappe or lunch snacks.
The rooms have kitchenettes and little balconies and great Koures amenities. The housekeeping service is fantastic and the whole garden, pool, public area/space is kept immaculate.
You can have breakfast on the terrace of the restaurant; lunch or dinner and the bar is open until 1am. But, it is never too crowded nor 'empty' and the design feels more like a terrace at someone's home or villa than a cafe/restaurant or hotel.
The best thing about the hotel is Nikos the owner - his knowledge of the area, Chania and where to find the best (whatever) is what keeps us coming back for our holidays. The thrill of 'discovering' one of his tips...the perfect romantic sunset drink or the best seafood/pasta/taverna/etc in a gorgeous little olive grove. This year, Safran and Da Rosario; last year The Well of the Turk...just ask, and if Nikos doesnt know he will find out. A true pro in the field.
Chania is lovely, but don't stay in the town. Too hot, noisy and crowded. Better to enjoy the blue sky and sea at the Ammos and take a bus/cab into town when you can be tempted away from the delicious food at Ammos.
Simply the best value and experience in Chania region. However, if you are a pool person and you don't want to swim amidst lilo's and floats, or kids jumping and diving in the pool and potentially splashing you as you sunbathe or read then think again in high season; or be prepared to sacrifice pool for beach and you won't be disappointed.
