“A beautiful setting let down by not being ready”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

Our check in of 2 nights was allowed after 2pm, as the villa is tucked away in the hillside we decided to take a leisurely drive up there and arrive a bit later on as we knew there was no pool facilities.
We arrived just after 5pm, Maria the host is very friendly and chatty, greeted us and explained we could not check in yet!! She had the technician in to fix her computer (not the internet) and so she had not had time to sort a couple of bits (mop the floor) in our room!! She also told us although we booked via booking.com with Credit card reservation - she could only take cash payment. We told her we only had enough for some souvenirs as was aiming to use credit card for hotel bookings and she then told us to withdraw money in small amounts at the atm!!
On checking out we were forced to withdraw money and were charged for doing so. We deducted the charge off our final fee paid in cash on leaving the villa.

It was scorching hot and we spent 45minutes listening to her explaining excitably how to get to other places of interest (Chania where we had just driven all the way from was suggested for dinner!!) along with a few obscurer places, and we finally set off in search of somewhere to kill another hour or so.
Back in the boiling hot car that had been parked in full sun we were not best pleased by the delay. We were offered to leave our bags inside the door and were allowed to use the WC before leaving again.
After 30minutes of driving down the hill again on winding roads we found a busy little village that served food. We had a meal here before returning, tired and hot from spending all afternoon hanging about and travelling.
We arrived back at the villas at 8.30pm to find the villa didnt look any different.

We had paid extra for the room with the spa bath and were disappointed to find when going to fill the bath that there was hair in the plug hole!!!! The bathroom was plain with no washing machine as advertised. Maria offered to wash our clothes using the next door villa over night as no one was staying in there but we decided to wait til the next hotel. We luckily had bought some foam bath as no toiletries were provided other than 2 tiny bars of soap and 2 small shampoos. The jets had to be switched on and off by the main fuse box!! Maria pointed out to us as the button on the spa was not connected. Slightly dangerous and awkward as the fuse box was right by the front door and we had to make sure our hands were dry!!

We had also already noticed that the BBQ facilities had not been built yet and there was a mess of rubble and building equipment there instead. This was another disappointment as were were hoping to buy meats and have BBQs both evenings.

We expected the room to be turned down or at least the bed to be made included in the price but only the bin was emptied.

The second night was a disappointment as there was no hot water at all when it came to us wanting a second bath. By this point i was annoyed as this villa for meant to be the highlight of our holiday, a mountain retreat for 2 nights half way through our holiday.

The building is no doubt a stunning place and the interior decor beautiful. Look out for many cockroaches!!
We didnt use the Tv and found it would have been more helpful to have an idea of what to expect for breakfast - supplied by Maria both mornings. The first was a basket of oranges, pan au chocolat, eggs and bacon...the second, no eggs or oranges, a loaf of bread, pastries and a over ripe banana and half a melon. If we had known we would have kept some eggs for the second day.
There was also a fruit basket in the fridge...but on inspection we decided it must have been there a few days as the underneath fruit was mouldy!

Overall, this Villa was a disappointment, mainly due to having high expectations from the online brouchure and not having the facilities mentioned, Checking in late, the spa bath a disgrace and poor management, We spent minimal time at the villa due to the lack of facilities and only stayed to sleep and have breakfast.

This Location is very pretty and its a shame lots of small things let the experience down. We would not stay here again, we feel it is not ready for guests yet and they should rethink the ability to pay by card instead as this was a big inconvenience for us.

On a positive note the kitchen facilities are very good and fully equipped, the bed was very comfy and offered a good nights sleep and it had air con.

Room Tip: Don't expect what you see in the photos. Not as luxury as you might expect. No BBQ facilities...

This small family-run business is a gem hidden in the Cretan mountains. Its four rooms are traditionally decorated and equipped with all the facilities (shower cabin, cooker, coffee maker, A/C, TV, Wi-Fi) a modern house has. The village itself is one of the quietest places in Crete, thus guaranteeing peaceful sleep. Breakfast is served in baskets daily and consists of fresh fruit, eggs, milk and traditional local products like bread and cheese. However, the most satisfying part of our trip has got to be the warm hospitality and friendliness of the owner, Pantelis, and our housekeeper, Maria, who not only went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, but also regarded us as friends and shared many a bottle of raki with us in the yard of the compound almost every night. A place definitely not to be missed, if not for its beauty and comfort, then certainly for a real taste of Greek hospitality!!!!! Crete at its best in Strofilia Villas!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was meant to write this review a long time ago, but better late than never! We stayed with my husband at Strofilia Villas in July 2011 for 4 days. We are both Greek living in London. There are 3 important things for me when paying for accommodation: cleanliness, comfortable bed and a good breakfast! Strofilia Villas scored highly on all those and many more. The owner, Pantelis Sapounakis, was extremely helpful and welcoming. We thought we were staying in just a room when we walked into this beautifully renovated stone built space with modern and comfortable amenities selected with taste. We ate organic products every morning, relaxed in the peaceful Strofilia Villa and explored beautiful nearby beaches and other villages. Would definitely go back and also recommend it to family and friends!

Wow!! The hospitality shown by the Sapounakis family was incredible..a seemingly unlimited supply of fresh warm bread, honey, fruit, wine and raki..and the villas were stunning. We were really impressed by every aspect of our stay. Loved the stone and wood, the views and did I mention the hospitality? We felt like part of the family. A 30 minute drive from Chania, this little gem is well worth it.
