“Unassuming but delicious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

We went to Vasiliko tonight for the second time during our stay, having had a bad experience nearby the night before. Once again, the service was extremely friendly and efficient, and the food plentiful and fresh. Tonight, we just had a simple tomato and cucumber salad, with fresh grilled octopus, and marinated anchovies, with a bottle of retsina. A perfect simple harbour side meal. Served with good fresh bread, and finished with complimentary watermelon and tsigoudia. Delicious, and reasonably priced.

We'll be back next time we are in Xania!

“A serious hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

I am not a frequent reviewer but i have to give these guys two huge thumbs up. We were sold on coming to eat dinner there when we were exploring the town early this morning. We struck up a very nice conversation with one of the hosts and in the end they offered us refreshments on the house and let us taste some of their fresh ingredients.

They are located right next to the old Venetian shipyards on the harbour and, right in front, an old traditional greek fisherman and his wife sells sea sponges from their boat.

I will get to the food in a moment. The first thing I noticed about the restaurant is that unlike most of the other harbour restaurants, their staff do not aggressively try to get tourists to come eat. In fact we watched them graciously help a couple find another restaurant that they were looking for. These are truly warm, and friendly people. In contrast, the staff at Thalasino Ageri- where we ate the previous night - were very aloof. While we were ordering our food we met a couple from Boston who told us that they come every night and have been doing so for the last 5 years. That was a very good sign for us.

So on to the food. This is a fish taverna so recommend sticking with the seafood and fish dishes. Everything they brought out to us and neighboring tables was heavenly. I recommend the stuffed grape leaves and the sea urchin dish is out of this world. Their local fish is top notch and the table next to us raved about the calamari. These people are proud of their food (one of the waiters would come by with various dishes he was serving to show us and insisted on taking us back in the kitchen to show us a lobster they were cooking.) They have every right to be proud.

This is a hidden gem - it is not glitsy or glamorous like some of the harbour restaurants - it is one where you can enjoy the harbour atmosphere while knowing you are eating food and being served by people who are passionate about what they do.

“Most enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013 via mobile

With our Monarch flight delayed 5 hours, we decided to venture into Chania for a last drink. We had a most enjoyable hour at this taverna, making good use of their wifi (to check to see if our flight was ever going to leave the UK!); the service was excellent. We did not have time to enjoy their food.

“Ok place, ok food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

We were satisfied by not very impressed by the food. Were shown the fish before they were cooked. Told it was fresh but it had very little taste. Service was above average. Friendly but a little slow.
