“A warm welcome and excellent food in Chania’s old port”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

I visited Christomos, tucked behind Chania’s old port, with a large party on a bitterly cold and extremely wet February evening. We found a warm welcome and enjoyed a great evening of really gutsy food and good wine.

Christomos is known for its hearty Cretan food, with an emphasis on local produce and traditional cooking styles. As it is only open in the Winter, it specialises rich and comforting meat dishes, casseroles, braised dishes and roasts. It also has some unexpected and interesting vegetable dishes, my braised wild greens and mushroom was a revelation! Amongst us we had some braised goat and lamb, and a pork stew with wild greens and celery. Delicious! There was a good choice of wines from the barrel and the proprietor was keen for us to sample them before choosing to ensure we had something to our taste. And there is some of the best bread to be found in Chania, backed in a small oven in the restaurant. We found the service prompt and efficient and left feeling ready to face the wind and rain outside.

“Now open all year round”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We have very much enjoyed dining in this establishment in recent years but have been disappointed when they have closed for the summer (as in 2012) and have not then been able to enjoy their excellent Cretan food in a relatively "up market" setting (linen tablecloths) during the warmer months.
On a quiet evening (13/3/13) we elected to dine at Chrisostmos assuming it would be our last chance to enjoy their menu before they closed for the forthcoming summer. However we were delighted to learn from our helpful waiter that they intend to keep open for the summer 2013.
The menu, when we dined, contained a good selection of traditional Cretan dishes with the addition of a few 'specials'. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will certainly be dining with Chrisostomos again on occasions during the summer.

“The bread alone is worth a visit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Visited this taverna recently after passing many times and thinking it looked attractive. To find it, you need to walk eastward around the harbour right to the end of the Old (inner) Harbour. Rather than turn left for the Venetian pier, turn right and Chrisostomos is about 30 metres on the right. It is opposite a car park so don't expect a view. However, it is very pleasantly laid out inside and you get proper linen knapkins, a rarity in these parts. The menu is the usual mix of grilled food, prepared dishes and salads etc, but the standard is very high. They do large beans (gigantes) as a main but baked with pieces of smoked pork - delicious. Other dishes are equally good, particularly the lamb. A good selection of food but not intimidating and they bake their own bread here, possibly the best bread we have tasted in a taverna. Prices are average for Chainia with mains from about €7- €11 though the portions are generous.

“Tasty Food, Great Service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We had the pleasure of going to Chrisostomos last night and I have to say I was very very pleased. It was not where I had originally planned on ending up for dinner. The fresh baked bread was delicious. When it came time to place our orders I had no clue what I wanted. The wait staff was extremely helpful and had suggestions from each of the different types of cooking styles there.
I ended up getting the Liver appetizer and the Ofto Lamb. The liver was maybe a little over cooked but still tasty. The Lamb on the other hand was AMAZING. Tender, juicy, falling off the bones tasty.
We had local red wine with dinner and it was also just so much more than expected.
Overall I loved this restaurant and will be going back again while we are here in Crete.
