a great insight into early civilization in this region. It puts everything in context. Lovely views from up there.

“Family Visit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

The site itself is nice and intersting. Not much information or guides which was disappointing. However, the views of the bay are increadible. Be aware there are two sites at the top and you should drive between them.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2014

If your resort is anywhere near this ancient ruin then you must go visit. This is a settlement that is over 4 thousand years old set high above Souda Bay.From Hellenistic through Roman and latterly the Ottomans it has everything that tells it's own story. The ruins are stunning and a must see!!!

“Roman ingenuity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

Just up from the old Turkish fort is Roman Aptera. It is one of the most impressive archeological sites near Chania. The cisterns for storing water are breathtaking. If you cannot find them it is probably because you are standing on their roof!
There is also the remains of a villa - which is very atmospheric. Recent excavations have uncovered a wonderful amphitheatre. That is not always open to the public - but if you can get to see it it is well worth it.
