“Lovely restaurant in a quiet lane”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

We went to Portes on the recommendation of our hotel, Mama Nena and loved the place. It is a really lovely restaurant in a quiet lane away from all the Tourist traps along Chania sea front. Try to order from the specials on the blackboard as they are really interesting. Loved the sardines wrapped in vine leaves and the chicken meat balls We went there for lunch and loved it so much that we decided to go back on our last night before flying back to OZ.

“Quality and variety”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Enjoyed a meal here - there were 4 of us and we shared several plates. All the dishes were different to the style of food we experienced in 3 weeks of travelling in Greece. The specials on the blackboard were delicious and we chose mainly from this list.
The value for money here is excellent and the setting only enhances the enjoyment of eating in the restaurant.

“We ate at Portes 3 times during our stay so we obviously liked it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Portes is down a back alley in Old Chania, along with 2 other restaurants. You can tell Portes by the doors hanging on the wall. It is a typical charming restaurant, with tables on both sides of the small cobbled alley. It is very popular so book if you can, or go early/late to get a table. We had a drink inside while waiting for a table one evening. You can always tell a good restaurant when it is difficult to get a table ;)
The food is good honest home cooked Cretan food, not cordon bleu. If you want that go to Paris! Our B&B host recommended this restaurant, as did our Cretan cook during our cooking lesson at Vamos Traditional Houses in Vamos village. There were Cretans eating in the restaurant too, so you know it is good if the locals are eating there.
There is a handwritten blackboard of specials which change daily according to what is in season or available. The fish/seafood is fresh and not frozen which many of the restaurants in Crete use. For example we went in September just before the octopus season, so there was no octopus on the menu.
My favourite dish was the Roast Fish. A whole white fish stuffed with peppers/olives/roast tomatoes wrapped in paper. It was succulent and delicious. We tried many dishes, all great, but the sardines wrapped in vine leaves was another favourite, along with the marinated small fish.
Prices are very reasonable, and it was nice to eat authentic Cretan food, as so many restaurants in Old Chania (especially those portside) are serving tourist foods such as pizza, hamburgers and fish n chips.
Give it a try, you won't regret it.

“Where are all those praises coming from?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Do not expect as much as the travel guides and other reviewers are saying. The restaurant is decent, food is very good, but we failed to notice anything special whatsoever. Portions are rather small so don't count of satisfying your hunger. Setting is beautiful, but again - other restaurants are also here and they share the same setting, so what's the big deal? Service is very friendly and we love the fact that the specials change and are displayed on the board for you to try something new every few days. But it's not that original anymore - everyone has it now... try harder if you want to retain your status Portes!
