“Dirty hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2010

The only reason I decided to write a review at this time (three years after my stay) is because I remember it as the dirtiest hotel I have ever been.
I was there on July of 2007 for a one week holiday (was partially funded by Greek state). Toilet was not very clean. Staff in the reception was not helpful. The worst think I remember is that when we placed the towels on the floor (for replacement), they did not change them.
Unfortunately whenever I remember my holidays in Crete, bad experience from this hotel comes to my mind. I hope that since then things have changed to the hotel.

Good clean hotel with great view over the harbour to Agios Nikolaos from breakfast terrace. We were family of six, comprising of one 8 year old, 2 parents, 3 grandparents and we all enjoyed our stay. The plus side of this hotel - good size bedrooms cleaned daily. Good lunch menu with great Greek salad and food available all reasonable priced. Staff too were very nice and helpful. The negative side - this hotel must have been really smart some time ago, but now seems to be on the way down with not enough investment to keep standards up, however it is good value for money. Good restaurants found, Avra on way to. town and Kri Kri near hotel. The Galleon is a good friendly bar to spend an evening and close to the hotel.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2010

Stayed here for a week with friends in May 2010. The hotel looks OK from the outside and the reception area is quite nice, but the rooms are VERY basic and leave a lot to be desired. The website lists the amenities, but doesn't mention that most of them are extras! For example you have to pay (2 Euros per day!) for a key to the security box in your room(and this is the ONLY safe deposit arrangement); you have to pay for the air conditioning (never established a rate for this, it wasn't really necessary whilst we were there). There is no internet available and the TV is only local Greek channels.

The rooms were reasonably clean and serviced each day but the decor was very tired even though it was the beginning of the season; doors didn't really fit, the paint finish was tatty, bits of light fittings were missing. The shower appeard to be made up of a selection of random plumbing parts and whilst it sort of worked it was not what you would expect in the UK. On the subject of showers, don't expect any hot water. At best we got moderately warm water (sometimes) first thing on a morning, most evenings the best you got was tepid but ususally it was just cold - odd in a country which uses mainly solar water heating but there you are. Oh, and if you do get warm water you will probably have to run the shower for a LONG time to get it.

The pool area was reasonably tidy with a few loungers and chairs, and my colleague assures me the pool itself was OK.

The hotel bar is OK but expensive.

Breakfast is typical european, assorted bits and pieces from a buffet. Edible but not inspiring is probably the best description. Cereals, bread (with a DIY toaster which qualifies as the slowest in history), boiled eggs, luncheon meat, sliced plastic cheese, biscuits, fruit (always tinned peaches) and greek yoghurt. were there most days. The tea and coffee were OK but avoid the so called fruit juice - a high sugar content flavoured (and not very well flavoured) liquid.

The reception staff were pleasant and helpful with things like taxis and directions to local places etc. The reception staff spoke quite good English, but few of the other hotel staff seemed to.

The hotel is about 1.5km from the centre of Agios Nikolaos and a taxi was 5 Euros each way. You can walk it in about 20 minutes (depending how many shops you stop at on the way).

The hotel itself was fairly quiet but the local dogs kept my wife awake most nights.

Finally, our in room fridge didn't work when we got there and it took them 2 days to get another one installed!

All in all, not somewhere I would recommend.

We had the misfortune to be allocated room 104 which is next door to the kitchens. Noise started at 5.00am in morning until breakfast at 7.30pm. In fairness they offered to move us to another room which faced the road (more noise all night long).

Room 104 should be used for storage only and not offered to guests, considering the receptionist said "there are always complaints about this room".

Also the bathroom was sadly in need of updating. Perhaps a change from concrete beds would be good as well!

Apart from that the hotel had stunning views across the port and the cleanliness was excellent.

Well worth visiting Stavros Taverna just up the road from hotel. Maria who runs it is fabulous and certainly gives value for money.

Enjoyed recent holiday at this hotel. It is a matter of luck where your room is situated as it could be facing the road or near the kitchen. Our relatives who travelled with us were next to the kitchen and were awakened each morning at 5.45 by the morning riutual of banging and crashing about in preperation for the day. The Greeks, altthough lovely people, do nothing quietly. They were offerred an alternative room and in hindsight should have taken it, but did not want the road noise either.Don't have room 104. The pool was lovely and the hotel always clean. The staff were very friendly and eager to be of assistance. It is 20min walk into the town and buses and taxis are outside the hotel. Everything in Crete was very expensive and the trips £38 for day trip to villages and £60 for jeep safari this is per person. Very good taverna called "Stavros" only a short walk from hotel.

Started disastrously; on arrival having stated preference for a twin bedded room we were allocated a shoddy studio - defective door handle, stained putuup chair. stained floor and a fridge door which would no close until we defrosted it. The pool looked uncared for, and the showers didn't work. The following day, things looked up, the staff made every effort to sort things out, we were allocated a nice bright room which was well looked afteer, and really quiet. Later on the pool showers were working, and the pool area improved. The breakfast was OK, the seating area was nice, and had a lovely view. For us, Ag Nik was adequate, but lacked the charm it had 20 years ago. It is a longish walk to get there, the first half on a busy road with a pavement on only one side and in places shrubs overhanging, but then there is a new prom and there are buses and taxis. There are plenty of tavernas, car hire and mini markets, and 2 blue flag beaches.

Stayed at Ormos for 7 nights from mid October. The previous reviewer has it pretty well spot on, very comfortable, staff pleasant, breakfast basic but for this level of hotel what we expect having spent many holidays on Greek islands. Pool bit cold at this time of year but didn't stop us using it every day. Had a 'sea view' room with balcony-south facing which overlooked a small inlet used for mooring small boats and looks directly towards the harbour at Ag Nik where the large boats dock. Lovely seat on the edge of the water in front of the hotel. Bedrooms basic but always clean, shower small but always plenty of hot water and water pressure. Walk into town is about 20-25mins but is on a path / promenade all the way and well lit at night. We ate at several restaurants : Mare Monte twice, food and service good if a little on expensive side and they are trying to establish new restaurant so giving lots of freebies. Du Lac was good, Liked the Pelagos with its 'garden setting' but our favourite(3 times) for quality of food and value for money was Avra, situated approx half way(10mins walk) into Ag Nik. Didn't eat in Kri Kri but liked the bar there.
