“Fantastic relaxing hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

We have just returned from 10 lovely relaxing days at the Minos Art Hotel. It is my second visit to the hotel, my first being eight years ago. We had a fabulous time here. The grounds of the hotel are just beautiful. We were upgraded to a seaview bungalow with the most amazing view of the bay to wake up to in the morning. There is a wide selection of food in the restaurant and we were both very impressed with the vast selection. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It is a place to completely unwind and relax. I have never written a review before but felt this time I really should. I hope to return again soon.

Bridget T
We have just returned yesterday (18th June) from a weeks stay in the Minos Beach Art Hotel. Having stayed there twice approximately 20 years ago we thought we would return for old times sake (and to help the Greek Economy)
We booked the holiday through Sovereign Travel who were excellent and include a 'private transfer'by taxi from Heraklian and back (well worth it). On
arrival we were allocated our bungalow (No:3) having booked a 'Junior Suite with garden view' to find we were looking out onto a wall and the balcony was overlooked by the next bungalow . Having talked to the Sovereign Representaive and explained our complaint we were immediately ushered to the managers office and offered a different room (221). This turned out to be perfect as was the rest of the week. The food, service and luxury of the hotel was as good as ever and we would return again in the future possibly although there are plenty of places to explore these days. Only slight niggle - no entertainmet of sorts, it would be nice to have a piano bar or similar for a sun downer. There was a electric pianist playing on Saturday night during dinner (not too good) and Sunday night a duo of Greek singers (better but not memorable). All in all a great time, super food, very luxurious- but check your room or bungalow before you go!

Room Tip: Check on arrival where your accommodation is situated before you are taken there. If not happy ask f...

From the moment you arrive you are made most welcome by the friendly and supportive staff. We had a Junior Suite with a sea view, it had bags of space and all the facilities we needed. The grounds are a particularly feature with their interesting art. An excellent and uncrowded pool, even though most rooms were let.
We had a Half-Board basis, the food and service in the 4 restaurants we used was excellent, always good quality and an interesting variety at each meal-time.
We will return. Definitely a 5 Star experience.

Returned yesterday from a first class break at this lovely hotel.

On arrival after 10.00 pm, I was met by a professional and friendly chap at reception, who was extremely helpful throughout the stay. He went as far as to log my smartphone into the hotel’s wifi, as I had encountered difficulties doing so. As dinner had been missed, a snack was provided, and a credit in respect of the dinner missed applied to lunch on the last day – a nice touch..

The allocated room, a junior suite in the gardens, was kept spotlessly clean, and situated in a private location, although near the hotel itself and the dining room. The housekeeper did an excellent job of ensuring that the room was pristine throughout the stay, taking the time to be friendly on the occasions we met, even teaching me basics of the Greek language!

It is unusual for me to comment on food, as I am in the “eat to live” camp, and very picky, but it was delicious. As a direct result of this I returned a few pounds heavier! Service in the dining room was second to none, with a particular mention to the lovely staff there, Periandros, Maria, a young waitress (she did not have a name badge so I did not get her name), with curly hair and glasses. A huge round of applause to the chef and his team, and the chefs at breakfast, who cooked made to order omelettes to perfection!

I did not use the pool facilities, preferring to relax along the extensive coastline fronting the hotel, where it was breezier. It was refreshing to be in a position to find a sun lounger at any time of the day, as just a few people who had “reserved” loungers very early in the morning. Fresh beach towels were provided every day without fail.

The gardens are beautiful, due to the efforts of the grounds men, who worked tirelessly in the heat to keep them that way.

The only negative point I would make is that wifi reception could be temperamental, although it always worked perfectly within the reception area. It would be difficult to ensure consistent coverage due to the size of the grounds, but this will possibly be improved upon in time.

The room was made available for a late check out, free of charge, which was another great touch.

To summarise, this is a well managed hotel, with fantastic staff. It was the most relaxing holiday I have ever had. I intend to return next May, with my family, and look forward to seeing the team again.

We have just spent a week at this friendly and comfortable hotel and are already planning a return. The hotel's location is perfect - near enough to the town to be within walking distance, but far enough away to be quiet and secluded. Our garden suite was large, with a sitting area, dressing room and bathroom and an outside terrace with a view of the sea. It was spotlessly clean. The gardens are interesting with the sculptures and artwork placed all around, and the swimming pool is very big.
The hotel has extensive waterfront, including two beaches and countless terraces with sea access, so there was never a problem finding somewhere to sit and relax or to swim in relative seclusion, nor any problem finding a sun lounger at any time of day. The views are superb.
The staff in all areas of the hotel were excellent, always friendly and quick to respond to requests. We particularly praise Irene and Elena for their service in the dining room.
The food at breakfast and dinner was wonderful, with plenty of choice. The limited menu at the swimming pool bar and beach bar was disappointing, but the food was still extremely good and well presented.
All in all this is a hotel I would recommend to those who like peace and quiet in a luxury setting, with the proviso that it may not suit those with mobility problems or those who like lively nightlife.

Room Tip: All the bungalow rooms, whether sea view or not, seemed to be very private.

I will preface this review by saying this was my 7th. visit to a Greek islands hotel so I understand what to expect of a 5 star rating in the Greek islands.

Lets start with the good points.

Location is excellent, beautiful views over a bay. Close enough to the town, but far enough away for there to be no noise.

Hotel scores 10 out of 10 for this.

The staff were without exception very good.

another 10 out of 10.

The bad points. Reception is underwhelming with a fish tank built into the counter, which would be o.k. except it was dirty. The sofas in reception were also soiled. I would expect this in a 3 star hotel.
The room was of reasonable size with a huge balcony, however the 2 chairs on it had base cushions but not back ones.
The room had been part modernised but the telephone was from the 80's and the television was similar to ones I disposed of 15 years ago, but the choice of channels was limited anyway.
Room rating 4 star.
The bar, both inside and outside was 5 star. Bar man excellent.
The pool area and bar were 4 star. There are no cushions for the sun beds, no pool attendant, 5 star hotel? Bar lady excellent.
The lunch restaurant 5 star, with a fantastic view.
Buffet restaurant for dinner and breakfast 4 star. Issues such as running out of bread and croissants at breakfast did not help.
The hotel is not suitable for those with walking difficulties.
You are provided with 2 medium size towels for pool use, there are no towel facilities at the pool, we asked for more towels and received them. Two other couples requests brought a member of staff from reception to declare that such a request would require a deposit of 30 euros per request as a deposit. This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel. This was a 2 star attitude.
At lunch 2 guests tried to take their unfinished drinks away to their rooms but were stopped as " the room cleaning staff do not return the glasses" . 2 star hotel attitude.

So a confused hotel.

It belongs to a trade voluntary group called " Small Luxury Hotels", well this is certainly not small and not luxury.

Overall the bad points out weigh the good points, nearly bit not quite!

Dear Geoff,

Thank you for choosing Minos Beach and for sharing your experiences with other travellers. We hope you had a pleasant flight home.

It's nice to read that all in all you enjoyed your holidays. We also took note of your critical points and asure that we we work on it. Please accept our sincere apologies for not having met your personal expectations all time.

Please allow us to mention, that in the standard rooms we still have these "old" televisions, at the moment we are making renovation plans for winter time. Without wanting to promise too much, we think that they will be changed for next year. Concerning the size of the hotel we want to add, that our garden area is really spacious, but with just 129 rooms we are still a rather small hotel.

It was a pleasure to welcome you and we hope to see you again and that you give us a second chance to convince you from our ability!

With best regards,
Yours sincerly

We stayed the first week in June.
A person from the UK may regard the grounds of the hotel as being a something between a park and a garden, with lots of the flowers beautifully in bloom at this time of year. We had a water-front bungalow at the northern end so the walk to the main building and restaurants was always a pleasure along winding paths flanked by flowers and shrubs.
These bungalows are relatively expensive due to their position, size and features, and being really next to the sea but are well worth it. Those bungalows in the same area just further back still have good views. All the bungalows in the northern area have dedicated sun-beds. Note however, for sun worshippers, they face eastwards and so may not all receive the sun late into the evening. Essentially we were very pleased with our accommodation, which was tidied and the towels replaced everyday.
I believe these bungalows entitle one to eat in the Ambrosia(?) restaurant in the evening versus the Bacchus restaurant; the Ambrosia has more extensive menus. During diner one can additionally select from the salad buffet which has an excellent range. The breakfast is a buffet and is also extensive. All the food is very good, the service is excellent. There is also an al a carte restaurant which appears a little expensive; we did not use it.
I cannot comment on the pool as we did not use it.
The downside to a bungalow in the north are is that a road is adjacent with several tavernas, both being a little noisy but not generally obtrusively so.
Bungalows in the southern area would appear more suitable for families with small children as they are relatively close to sandy beaches.
The waterfront bar was very relaxing after tripping in some hot and humid weather during the day.
Overall a great hotel.

Note: we always look at Google's StreetView before booking so note that GoogleMap seems to have misplaced this hotel, showing it south, with the main road between it and the sea.

The local harbour is some 20 minutes walk away and well worth it. There is a neighbouring "lake", which is surrounded by cliffs on one side and is linked by a small channel to the harbour. From here the views are tremendous and the Migomis Restaurant sits right on top of the cliffs. One can have just a beer, snack or full restaurant meal here, but is not cheap. The two of us had a great lunch, starter main meal, and coffee plus bottle of excellent wine for £70.
As TripAdvisor does not include the website of the hotel I quote it here http://www.minosbeach.com/en/

Room Tip: Bungalows right on the sea-front are worth it, but not for small children

Dear Clive,

Thank you so much for making Minos Beach the hotel of your choice and for sharing your experiences with other travellers. We hope, you had a pleasant flight home and took also some Cretan sun with you.

We highly appreciate your kind and detailled feedback and are happy to read, that you really enjoyed your well deserved holidays. Please allow us to add, that guests booked in superior seafront rooms, superior waterfront rooms, superior waterfront rooms with private pools, villas and executive villas enjoy their dinner in "Ambrosia" restaurant and guests for guests booked in other room categories we provide the "Bacchus" restaurant. The differences between the two restaurants are not that big, but in this way both are never too busy and allow a dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.

Thank you also very much for informing us about the bug in Google Street View/ Google Maps. Indeed they placed us at the wrong side of the road and we will do our best to correct this. Since the early 60's we are located directly by the sea.

Dear Clive, it was a big pleasure to welcome you and we hope to see you again soon!

With best regards,
Yours sincerly
