“Good on balance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

We stayed for 10 nights at the start of May 2011 with breakfast and dinner included.

We didn't have any problems getting sunbeds at all, perhaps because we were early in the season.
Breakfast was a wide selection, but there was no orange juice, only squash.
We weren't allowed a kettle in the room. Coffee at the bar was 2 euroes and there was an extra 2 euro charge for room service. Note that 2 euroes is the going price for coffee elsewhere in the resort so it's not just the hotel that's expensive.
Staff at the pool bar seemed a bit overworked, with dishes and glasses piling up around the bar during the day. There were only 2 waitresses for the entire pool area.
The beds were hard but there was plenty of storage space for luggage and the room was spotlessly clean.
The plumbing was terrible, but that is probably a problem throughout Greece. When I wanted to empty the bath, the water came up through a drain in the floor and risked flooding the room.
We only got one pillow each but reception were helpful and got us another when we asked.
Our room faced the back, a noisy alleyway with motorbikes and a barking dog, so we had to keep the balcony door closed at night.
The location is good, just a few minutes walk to the centre of town, but on the seafront.
There were a few young people in tracksuits, employed by the hotel to persuade guests to join them for activities, which was a bit annoying and noisy but other guests might appreciate this.
The sound insulation wasn't good, so we could hear other guests at night.
There was free internet and a couple of computers for guests.

Good overall.

Room Tip: Get a seafront view

We enjoyed our stay at the Hermes from the moment we arrived, polite and hard working staff, clean rooms, fantastic seaview and good food. The pool area is nice and was kept clean,we had no trouble getting a sunbed in the morning but if you want one later in the day you have no chance. Entertainment was put on every night, they try to please everyone.Animation team in the day worked hard and were very polite. The bartender at night worked his backside off, think he could do with some help in that area.Hotel manager was polite,he was walking around alot checking things were ok. The dining room staff worked hard and always had a smile,Manolis one of the waiters was great, friendly approach and a good manner about him. We went all inc and it was well worth it.We have been to other Iberostar hotels and you can tell they are putting there stamp on the Hermes, things can only get better. Ag Nik is such a nice place, couldnt fault it,we would return.

Room Tip: seaview is a must

I stayed at Hotel Hermes for three weeks. The location is perfect! Two beaches right outside of the hotel, and a third about a 10minute walk through downtown. Many supermarekets, small shops and restaurants right outside our door step. All of which were decently priced. The view from my room was amazing. Nightlife was great. Again, bars/pubs within walking distance, everyone wants you in their bar/pub, everyone is happy, no entrance fees, no cabbing anywhere, lots of people!

The hotel seems to be in the middle of an upgrade. My room was nothing spectacular. Our air conditioner leaked onto the carpet for the entire trip so who knows what health hazard that is or may become. Other people that I travelled with seem to have renovated rooms that looked better an updated.

The cleaning staff did a great job with our rooms. The hotel has Wi-Fi which did come in handy every now and then.

Our package included buffet breakfast and buffet dinner. One of our first breakfast's, a few of us, due the start of our early day, figured we could grad a small bite, attend to our plans, and then actually have a breakfast after. One of the dining managers saw us while we were eating the second time, and rudely asked us if we had eaten breakfast already. So we told him yes. Then rudely and in a demeaning manner he kept saying "You pay, you pay." We explained to him that we did not know and he would not let down his tone. He had no sense of customer service or how to be cordial during a misunderstanding. He and the other dining room manager didn't bother at all to interact with myself or any of the other people in the group I was with. I also found some of the wait staff to be very rude. They never smiled, and always seemed very disgruntled. It made the dining aspect of my trip very uncomfortable and I felt unwelcomed. There was a couple at one point who started talking to us at one point, because they were so suprised at how the dining room staff were treating our group. The cooks smiled more and interacted more positively with the customers than the managers did.

My advice to the dining staff: people who come to your hotel are hardworking people. who, just like you have to work very hard. We are no different. If you were to come to my country, and I were to provide you with a service, I would treat you with respect and make you feel welcomed even when misunderstandings occur. I understand that the economy in Greece is not the greatest, but if you want repeat customers, you need to treat them in a manner that they would want to return to your hotel and tell everyone else to book at your hotel.

I do wish to return to Agios Nikolaos one day, but would only use the same hotel again if the customer service was upgraded. Or, I would not have my dinners included in my package, and spend my money at the various restaurants nearby where the staff were more friendly and made me feel welcomed and actually visited their restaurants multiple time throughout my trip. In addition, there's also Hotel Cora right beside Hotel Hermes....

Erharisto!
Gia Sou.

The Hotel
We stayed for a week at the Iberostar Hermes hotel in Agios Nikolaos in August 2011. After a 2 hour transfer (we were told approx 1 hour 10 mins) from Iraklion airport we checked into the hotel , there was a worrying moment when the night receptionist couldn’t locate my reservation ( I booked through venere.com). Although once they did locate the information check-in was speedy. When we got to our room we were pleased that it was spacious with lots of wardrobe space and a large balcony. The downside was that from the smell we knew we had been given a smoking room instead of a non-smoking but we were too tired to question this and decided to tackle it in the morning.

In the morning we stepped onto the balcony to behold the fantastic view of the bay and decided that we’d keep our room, the space alongside the view more than made up for a faint smell of smokiness.
The room was cleaned every day to a very high standard.

Pool Area
The hotel has a nice rooftop pool with a bar for drinks and snacks. Our holiday habit is to go out and about in the morning and then spend a couple of hours by the pool in the afternoon. On the days that we went back to the pool it was quite difficult to get a sun bed and there were numerous comments in the hotel comments book about the difficulty of getting a sun bed, and the fact that many people reserved them with towels even though they were absent from the pool area. The pool itself is also in full shade by 4pm although the sun bed areas are still in the sun.

Food
We were on an half board option and the food at the hotel was very good. Breakfast had a variety of breads, fruit and yoghurts, cheeses & cold meats, fish, cereals. It also served hot food such as eggs (scrambled & fried) tomatoes, mushrooms, local sausage and bacon. There was also a chef making waffles. There was also coffee, juice and variety of teas available.
The evening meals were also good with lots of options including roast lamb with mint gravy, roast beef, baked fish, pasta, beef stroganoff plus a wide variety of salads. I was little disappointed that there were not more greek cuisine such as stuffed vine leaves, stifado, moussaka etc, but there did seem a wide variety to suit all tastes. We decided to eat out on a few occasions as Agios Nikolaos offers a variety of restaurants.

Location
The hotel has a great location, just a 5 minute walk from many bars and restaurants. There is a small shingle beach directly opposite the hotel but we didn’t use it. There is also a lovely promenade in front of the hotel. You can walk along this into the centre of Agios Nikolaos where you will find an inner bay (which is locally called the Lake) with lots of lovely cafes and restaurants.
There is also a bus stop just outside the hotel where you can catch the local bus to either Plaka or Elounda.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Holiday - July prior to start of school holidays. Would just like to say what a fantastic holiday we had. We would highly recommend the Hermes; food, cleanliness, rooms quite spacious, swimming pool, staff helpful etc, all inclusive package was excellent. People would still put towels on the sun loungers in the morning but there were enough sun loungers as people seem to come and go throughout the day. We had blue sky's every day. We hired a jeep for 3 days (150 euro) and went up into the mountains which was fantastic we did get lost quite a bit though as the road signs are not too good. The hotel location was perfect for being able to walk into the centre if we decided to go out for a drink in the evening, very good selection of shops and restaurants also. Not as crazy as Malia by no means for the older teenagers/young adults, but still night life that went onto the early hours for those who wanted it. The only thing that spoilt the travelling was the very long journey to and from the airport about 2 1/2 hours due to all the pick ups, I think we would book a taxi next time.Evening entertainment was very good, really good range and on just at the right time. Day time activities were fun and staff friendly but not too pushy when it came to encouraging you to join in. We would definitely go there again.

have recently returned from a great holiday at the hermes hotel, after an initial shaky start to the holiday where we had to change rooms, the room we were given was great much better than the first and it had a partial sea view bonus, the staff on the desk couldn't have been more helpful or understanding.
the hotel is in a perfect location literaly 5 mins walk to the bars and resturants.
we went on a few trips the best one being spinalonga, after reading the book the island, it was well worth going, we also went on the mini train to eluonda.
We were full board and could not fault the food or the quality of what was on offer, the only downside was the prices of the drinks in the bar and after a mistake on not specifying what wine we wanted ended up paying a bit more than we wanted, although we did notice that there were the introduction of a few new things one being a drinks menu and coffee pots on the table in the morings much better than trying to catch someone eye to get another drink.
We did hear a few people complaining that the hotel had been taken over by Iberostar and that it had lost its personal touch, however having stayed at other Iberostar hotels previously the standard of service can only improve with the changes that are bieng made.
The biggest downside is that there are not enough sun beds around the pool and we did have to get up very early to get a bed with a brolly, even though there were signs around the pool forbidding people to do this, but as they say if other are doing it so can I. the only solution is provide more loungers as there is plently of room.
we would definatly return to this hotel again.

Just back from a 2 week stay at the Hermes which was a very enjoyable experience. The staff and the food were excellent. Management need to relax a bit instead of standing around looking menacing and putting the efficient staff under pressure. Hotel is in a good location near enough to the resort centre for shopping and the bars and restaurants but also far enough away from the noise. Nice outlook onto the bay from the sea view rooms watched the cruise liners at the port, not such a nice view from the rooms at the rear of Hotel. We actually got a discount by asking for a sea view before we travelled via Thomas Cook! Staff are friendly e.g. Valentino in the main bar on Level 5. Koula in the pool bar and great waitresses Elina and Natalia. The entertainment team of Borko and Velina were also great and encouraged everyone to take part in activities. Borko learned me to play poker in the afternoons. Beware of some of the music bars such as Sorrento and Aquarius as it appears that some tourists may have had their drinks spiked at one of these, we met someone who was targeted and lost some belongings.

Room Tip: Level 4 can be noisy from restaurant and people moving sunloungers around on level 5
