“Not suitable for under 40s.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2011

Completely unsuitable for children and young people. The balconies would be lethal for a small child. Entertainment is organised by two delightful Bulgarians, who are run ragged by the lazy, lazy management, who spend a lot of time smoking in the offices - as a result the corridors smell disgusting. They stood like lemons in the dining area and that was the only time we saw them. Absolutely hopeless. The prices are off the scale in the Resort - £6 for a gin and tonic, £90 for a Panama hat, £80 for a simple cotton dress, for example. The bar prices in the hotel are very very high. Glasses are permitted in the pool area and we saw glass in the pool, which is unchlorinated - just sea water. We saw a person with an uncovered, weeping varicose ulcer in the pool and that put the tin lid on it - we ended up paying for loungers on the beach - an extra £90 in total. Trips are very expensive and so is car hire. The beach is sweet, but very small and must get swamped in High Season. The airport experience going home is hellish - prepare to queue 3 times to check in - it took 90 minutes!!!! We came home poorer but wiser. The tragedy is that the local people are delightful, but held hostage by the crippling cost of living.

Room Tip: Sea view means main road traffic noise

Good hotel, half board for a week.
Room, 6 out of 10 (one of the ones that has not been done up yet, but clean, good view and pleany space)
Food, 7 out of 10 (plenty of choice and good service)
Pool, 4 out of 10 ( seems they would rather look at towels that get placed by fairies in the middle of the night on sunbeds than people, hence the bar and snacks are not busy because most of us went to the beach ! 2 good beaches near by but you need to stump up 7.50 euros for 2 sunbeds and shade)
Location, 8 out of 10. 10 minute walk to centre, great places to eat (we eat out half the time)

The location of this 4 star hotel is superb and the views we had from the 7 floor over the bay were stunning.
Pros are as follows:
The bar facing out across the the bay is a perfect way to end each evening and the staff are really friendly
The rooms are clean, if a little dated
Cons
Food is really basic and unfortunately as we booked this through Thomsons we had to take half board......never again as we ate out on all but 1 of our 7 night stay due to the poor buffet style food.
The breakfasts were not much better as we only could handle 3 of them and spent the others at a nice greek restaurant serving a traditional english brekky.
The rooms are not of 4 star standard, no coffee/tea making facilities, beds are really low to the ground, pillows are a disgrace and the TV is from the ARC!
The hotel had a comments book on the front desk, which we both viewed and agreed with another of the comments which was the total lack of sunbeds around the pool area. Also the fact that guests seem intent on hoarding them from the early hours/night before, to the detriment of all others and the hotel appaers to take no action to stop this.
Given that the hotel claims to have 4 stars rating I would like to see them up their game to earn this, I have stayed in numerous 4 star hotels around the world and this one is 3 stars at best.
Finally would like to say that all the staff are extremeley pleasant

I have just returned from a week's holiday staying at the Hermes Hotel(7th-14th June). I read that the Hermes Hotel had recently undergone refurbishment under the new management of Iberostar and I could not find many reviews, so I knew I was taking a risk when booking the hotel. However, I was really pleased I booked this hotel. The hotel has a prime position overooking the Mirabella Bay and is just 5-10 minutes walk at a leisurely pace to the port, the lake and centre of the resort. We booked a seaview room - the extra cost was worth every penny. The views are amazing in all directions. However, there are various sized balconies with a seaview and the room we were given on arrival had a decent size balcony, but only had a window size opening. The view was good, but I really wanted to be able to sit on the balcony and enjoy the view in all directions. The hotel very quickly agreed to swap our rooms and on the second day we were given another room on the same floor (2nd floor) with a wide open balcony. I read in the few reviews I had found that not all rooms had yet been renovated. However, the rooms we were allocated had been decorated and refurbished - fresh paint, new carpets and curtains and contrary to what I had read we did have air conditioning in our room. Apparently not all rooms have this until 15th June for about 3 months, so I think we were lucky. I think the hotel should provide this for all rooms from early May - it is not pleasant to sleep in a room when the temperatures are really high. The beds on the firm side which I don't mind and we only had one pillow. However, the maid gave us extra pillows when we asked - this was a not a problem. The rooms, foyer and bars are all modern and spotlessly clean. Our room was cleaned thoroughly every day. The hotel provides many things that you usually have to pay extra for: free-wifi and free use of 2 pc's in the foyer, beach towels at no charge and a safe at no extra charge. The restaurant has the most amazing views and the food was very good quality and there was always a good selection. Salads are always available at breakfast and dinner and there is a lot of choice. There are usually 3-4 main dishes and various vegetable options and a choice of 7-8 sweets and icecream and fresh fruit, plus many kinds of breads. There are some improvements that can be made - food needs to be covered better to keep it warmer and also the plates need warming better. The waiters worked very hard and kept filling up my coffee cup or removing used plates. However, on the odd occasion it looked like they needed extra help as they had to cover a lot of tables. On our first night it was Greek Evening and they had a bbq plus many other dishes and also had singers and dancers entertaining the diners. They even managed to get my husband up dancing which is a first! :) On the whole a very enjoyable stay at the Hermes and I would definitely go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Always request a seaview room with a wide balcony

Just back from a week in Ag Nik...stayed at the Hermes and IMHO its location was fantastic!!!!

I can honestly say the sea view was just spectacular from our room and we made friends with other people and saw their rooms and they may have been slightly smaller but the view was still amazing....didn't see any without a view but you MUST pay the extra for the sea view cos it is worth every penny.

I was a bit worried initially cos of the road outside and being on the 3rd floor but once the doors were closed heard NO noise at all....sure if you sat on the balcony during day it was noisy but the view was well worth it IMO.

The rooms we had was spotlessly clean...bit tired looking...carpet on floor... but perfectly OK for a weeks holiday..only thing was no tea making facilities so take your own kettle and stuff cos none available....on the plus side own fridge ..so could stock up on water from local supermarket literally a few doors down. 6 bottles of water for 2 euros ..IMO pretty reasonable and could take own drinks to pool.

The food was OK...breakfast was pretty good with plenty of choice..even had champagne and smoked salmon one day for breakfast..dinner...I can see that if you like a large choice with more English foods it wouldn't suit everyone...plus the ONLY complaint I'd have had was (bearing in mind I detest buffets at the best of times)..is it was never hot at best lukewarm and some stuff downright cold...BUT....frankly it was such a great place and pretty reasonable I'd happily pay for half board and then eat out for dinner...which is my plan for next year when I go again..and I can honestly say it is the first time I have ever wanted to go back again to the same place next year and I have travelled the world in some 5* places.

The salad bar was excellent for starters fresh fruit beautiful and puddings/sweets to die for their apple pie was gorgeous...so no one would starve unless boringly fussy.

I don't know what people pay where they live for drinks but I found them pretty normal price wise....actually we found a terrific little bar around the lake where you could have two glasses of wine and a bottle of water for 5 euros...don't know ANYWHERE in UK that you'd get the same deal.

The hotel pool is on the roof with views that are just gorgeous...very clean and towels provided BUT...sadly the old book the sunbed towel early applies here...and yes it was the early bird that got the best spot..so someone had to be up and have the towel down around 7.30 to get a good spot...hate that but it seems if you can't beat em have to join them..lol.

The shops which are great are walking sistance ..bars restaurants etc are also nearby and the resort itself is fairly classy IMO.

Walk right round the hrbour and keep going and there are somne lovely tavernas with fresh fish very reasoably priced...dunno what people expect to pay cos I reckon I have paid more for a coffee in UK than I did for a snack with wine in Ag Nik.

Not much entertainment IN the hotel...quite a lot of older people when I was there definately not for young people unless maybe on honesy moon but for couples or people who like slightly more upmarket on a budget..I reckon couldn't beat this hotel...and yes I will be going back next yr.

Room Tip: Must have sea view IMO

Stayed from 22nd May - 5th June.

We were given the sea view room we paid for (room 125, just above reception),it also had 3 big arc lights swinging on a cable outside which light up the crossing and some pigeons roosting above the balcony. Worse was the traffic din and fumes from the coaches coming and going that always left their engines running outside. We asked for a move and with the help of the rep (Amy) we were moved to the 9th floor after 3 days to a much better room overlooking the pool.

The rooms are clean but quite dated and, talking to others, it seems to be "pot luck" whether you get a refurbished room or not. Not a prospect I would look forward to to start an expensive holiday.

Despite being told when we booked that the aircon would be turned on as the temperature rose (25*C+) the reception staff were adamment that the contract they had with the tour companies is that 15th June is the start date for air-con and not before!

So many people asked that they managed to turn it on for a few hours...what a joke!

The restaurant, staff and food choices were all good as was the pool area. Free Wi-fi is neither here nor there as everywhere we went had free Wi-fi. The evening entertainment was twice with a very loud Greek evening in the restaurant while everyone was eating, they were trying to get people up to dance halfway through their meal...strange

The cost of a bottle of wine however was extortionate for what was local plonk (18-26 euros!)

This is a review of the hotel, however a word about Ag Nic...this is a friendly busy town and port with lots to see and enjoy. Many shops, cafes and restaurants all along the front and town centre.

We would certainly visit Crete and Ag Nic again but not the 3 star Hermes hotel.

This review was originally sent to "Thomsons Review" but they chose not to publish it....wonder why there are no reviews shown there !!

Room Tip: Pay for a sea view, hope its above the 4th floor.

Having read the great reviews for the Hermes hotel we decided to book a weeks holiday at the hotel for our first visit to Greece. We made the holiday booking with Thomsons, for peace of mind, though we prefer to be independent. Our room had a sea view but was positioned over the roof of the pool bar with air conditioning units sticking up which was unattractive. We decided that we would try to change the room but we were told by the reception staff that the hotel was full at that moment but a different room may become available later in the week. After unpacking we decided to stay in the room because we did not want the agro of changing, we were never contacted to let us know if a different room had become available.
Our room was very clean, if dated and the maid sevice was excellent. The food in the resturant was of a good standard with breakfast served from 7.00 am and dinner from 6.30 pm. The pool area was small with sun beds close together and free beach towels were available for use around the pool. Overall the hotel was clean and tidy but compared with hotels in Spain was of 3 star quality not 4.
For days out we used the local bus service which was good, the bus station was a steep 15 minutes walk away.
Be aware of Herakalion airport on your return, we were treated like cattle as you move from one queue to another. We barely had time for to get refeshments or visit the loo because Thompsons did not get us there early enough.
