“Neagative points result in frustration during holiday”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

M wife and I just spent a week at this 5-star resort in Eastern Crete. While the reception staff was very polite and helpful there were numerous negative factors during our staff which detracted from what we hoped would be a restful and pleasant expereince.
By far the most frustrating element in this multi-level complex was the "funicular" cable car system. the 3 funicular cars look quite modern but acually use a primitive pully system which is quite jerky during stops and starts. Passengers absolutely must hold tight on the grip railings, or risk falling. These cars ar extremely slow and passengers often wait more than 5 minutes for a car to arrive.
This coplex has many staris and steps, some of them constructed of native stone and quite uneven. Therefor this resort cannot be fully used be guests with physical handicaps.
There is no toilet on the beach level; several flights of uneven stairs must be negotiated in order to reach the toilets.
We booked half-board. We were disappointed in the lack of variety and mediocre quality of the buffet. The beef and veal dishes were, without exception, quite tough and difficult to chew.
All in all we did not feel that this resort lived up to its 5-star rating.

Daios_Cove, Manager at Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas, responded to this review, September 29, 2012
Dear Guest,
I would like to thank you for your comments regarding you recent stay of September 21 to 28, 2012 as it is always a pleasure to receive constructive feedback, which we may utilize in an effort to further develop the resort and establish its brand awareness globally. We have created a luxury resort of enduring value using superior design and finishes, and we strive daily to support it with a deeply instilled ethic of personal service. We feel that this will allow us to satisfy the needs and wants of the most demanding customers, and it will set us on a luxury accommodation path.

Although we appreciate your honesty, your description of the transportation means within the property is rather misleading. At this point I should point out that Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas was constructed just 2,5 years ago, using state of the art technology. We feature three funiculars in total, each one taking 2,5 minutes to go from one stop to the final one and 3,5 minutes in case it stops in every single of the four stops. I am certain you comprehend that due to the slope curve of the resort and its amphitheatrical construction, guests’ safety is of primary importance, which is why its speed is set at the present interim.

I do however wish to thank you for mentioning that it only takes 5 minutes to drive guests around the resort. In fact this time frame is rather successful, taking for granted that rooms 622 & 623 in which you were allocated, are about 3 minutes drive from the resort’s reception, subsequently exhibiting that our transportation mechanisms (24 hour shuttle service of club cars driving guests around at their will ) are fast and effective.

Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas is in full compliance with physically challenged individual areas, featuring such rooms and ramps around the resort. Any constructive feedback on this is more than welcome as we are keen on new investments respecting physically challenged people. I am forced to mention though that you are touching an extremely sensitive area, referring to services that neither you nor anyone of your family members could have used (based on your reservation correspondence).
Taste can be entailed differently by different guests / nationalities, which is why our main restaurant PANGEA features a variety of themed nights all week round, with fresh products amongst which are fresh fish, fresh shrimps, prosciutto, fresh meat cutlets and other first class raw materials. In this way we wish to ensure that we cover a broad spectrum of gastronomic preferences through and International food bazaar. At the same time with our “Dine around concept” guests may use the gourmet Italian and / or Greek restaurants with a 20 Euro per adult and 10 Euro per child reduction. Both restaurants receive daily excellent comments on their cuisine and service experience.
The hotel has exceptional hardware and a fresh team willing to provide a true experience as we wish our guests to be happy and to act as golden “ambassadors” of our resort. We all look forward to greet you in the future.

Sincerely,

Panagiotis Almyrantis

Just back from a weeks stay at the Daios Cove. Contemporary hotel, rooms very spacious but you do need to be fit as its quite hilly, with lots of steps to beach (No loos on beach). we had half board as there is nothing close to the hotel. Breakfast good with all the usual stuff, but service on the slow side not many staff on duty at breakfast. Evening service was better with three times as many staff on, maybe as they were selling you wine/drinks which didnt happen at breakfast. Our first few days were very relaxing near the pool (chilly this time of year) but the last two days the wind started blowing and that was not too pleasant. sea water was very clean and beach gentle slope, mainly shells not sand.

Room Tip: Depends on how far you want to walk, or if your lucky near the funicular. rooms in main building pro...

This is a great resort. We had a standard room with a sea view and the room was very spacious, as was the balcony. The bed was enormous and very comfortable. We were quite high up so we sometimes used the funicular which takes ages but is useful after dinner and drinks! I imagine it would be quite difficult for guests using wheelchairs to navigate around the resort, but parents with buggies seemed to manage ok.

The whole resort is very clean and tastefully decorated and it is easy to relax here. We didn't use the pool at all, as the beach and sea are lovely but the pool was popular, especially with families. The beach is a shingle beach and there are usually enough sun beds to go round, but only if you get up early enough. Although the resort says you cannot reserve your sunbeds in advance, this rule is widely ignored, which led to a few arguments on the beach (not us!) The sea is lovely to swim in all day, especially first thing in the morning when the families are still having breakfast. There is a separate part of the beach for guests staying in villas, but it is no different from the rest of the beach and I can't really see the point of it. The beach staff, especially Vladimir, were very good, but the food served by the beach is average at best. Having free Wifi everywhere, including the beach, was fab.

The buffet breakfasts at Pangea are very good and buffet dinner was generally reasonably good. We went to the Taverna one night and although the location was lovely the food was rather disappointing. The alcoholic drinks in the whole resort are very expensive, one cocktail was approximately £12... We did not try the Ocean restaurant, nor did we go to the Spa as the beach was too inviting to drag ourselves away from.

There is a bar called Crystal Box which would seem a nice place to hang out but it was generally quite quiet. There was a band (Liebe) one night whilst we were there, who were excellent. I'm not sure why they don't have more live music, may be because it was not high season whilst we were there.

There were quite a lot of kiddies around which can be a negative on the beach, but as we had dinner quite late in the evening they didn't bother us too much in the restaurant.

The staff in general were very helpful, only one or two were a bit brusque. Room service was prompt and accurate.

Overall an excellent resort and one that we will definitely come back to.

Room Tip: Definitely get a room with a plunge pool.

I think that this one of the best hotels in Crete. I've stayed with my wife in a suite with private pool for 270 Euros / night (from 540) and had one of the best hotel stayings in my life. The room was very clean and huge, the baths were amazing and the pool very nice with sea water.
Apart from the room, we've had a great time on the beach. The beach is artificial with white sand made mainly of crushed shells. The beds are very comfortable with pillows.
i really loved the main swimming pool of the hotel, where you can have some of your best photos. It is built on the edge and you see the sea just below, thus you have the impression that the sea is continued from the beach.
Last, I'm still dreaming of the yummy breakfast...

This is a great hotel! Very contemporary. The staff told me it only opened 3 years ago and it shows. It is in a cove with about 300 rooms and villas. You have to descend using a funicular which is very efficient. Staff at the beach are very helpful in finding you a sun bed. sandy beach although not as fine as some places in Asia. Nice cafe at the beach for drinks and lunch.

Rooms can be accessed on foot, funicular or using golf buggies. The rooms are very luxurious with fantastic bathrooms. Food is buffet style with 2 a la carte restaurants for a supplement although we only tried the buffet restaurant. As you would expect the buffet restaurant is not gourmet style food but is perfectly acceptable for 7-10 days. Nearest town is over 10km away so you need a taxi to get there but we only did this once.

The best advice I can give is DO NOT USE A BUS TRANSFER TO GET HERE! We did and it took 3 1/2 hours! Taxi should cost 85-95 euros but it is well worth it - 50 mins. Overall v good

Situated about 15 minutes drive from Ag NiK.
An impressive resort hotel, built to high quality. We had a swimming pool room and half board.
Swimming pool waste of time even in high season as not in sun and too cold to use(even for my 10 yr old daughter)
The funicular system serving the hotel is very slow, and it is a pity there is not a staircase running parallel as the wait can be very frustrating, but the alternative can involve long walk!
Pool area is small given size of hotel. As so many rooms are swimming pool equipped, they probably presumed quite a few would take advantage of their private pools-no one seems to! As I say they are too cold!
The service is generally pretty good. The Cretan staff are excellent. Many EE workers who are probably students, and there was definitely a lack of service with a smile!
The buffet is ok, but after 3 nights had enough. Very busy. Some problems with service. 1 waitress could not understand I wanted white wine to be cold, and just said that's the way it came. Had to complain to manager(ridiculous) who sorted immediately but then received surly looks rest of stay!
We paid a reasonable rate given quality of hotel. Service not up to 5 star standard, but to an extent you get what you pay for. It is a pity they can employ more local labour!

Room Tip: Avoid the swimming pool rooms (even in August)unless you are willing to pay 50€ per night for heatin...
