Owner description: This small monument commemorates the battle in 480 B.C. in which a small band of about Spartan soldiers held off a huge Persian army for three days. The delay was long enough to allow for the successful defense of Athens against the Persians.

“In the presence of heroes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

Visited the monument in September 2010, so the date of this review will be wrong. I had read Steven Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" and had watched the program on this battle on the History channel before the tour. My initial reaction to the site was disappointment but considering the time lapse this quickly disappeared and looking at the monument and being at the site where Leonidas and his Spartans and the men from various other cities fought for their country and freedom and made the ultimate sacrifice is not only humbling but made me appreciate the freedom I enjoy. Courage and valour is always to be admired and respected. A visit here is well worth the time if you value freedom!

“the statue of Leonidas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

The scale, size and attitude of the great man was splendid and yet it was in essence a very simple statue and monument. I would have like to have seen more explanations in English. I knew all about the battle and guie books had told me what to expect. But otherwise no information.

“This... is...Thermopylae !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Following the success of 300 the movie we were interested to check out Thermopylae. There is a monument of Leonidas and the place is fairly baron. Don't let this put you off from visiting the site. It's full of history and to stand where the 300 Spartans fought nearly 2500 years ago is ore inspiring. In ancient times the coastline was where the modern road is today, stand there close your eyes and imagine what it might have been like, it's an unbelievable feeling.
