“It's just a street and not a beautiful one...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

It's just a street and not a beautiful one... I pass it on a regular basis since it's in the center of Athens, but I wonder why it's even up for review

“Athinas Street”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

Not the safest area, one should be very cautious when walking there especially after dark. It links Omonia with Monastiraki Square. Avoid the side streets!

“Athinas street (not Athens street), the street of Goddess Athina”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

First, the name of the attraction in your guide should be corrected. This is Athina's street (prounounced differently from the name of the city of Athens), the street starting from the Acropolis (the place of goddess Athina's temple) and leading to the west part of the city centre. Being the border of that west part, the street reflects, to a large extent, the problematic profile of the west quarters, with poor immigrants etc, but, at the same time, it hosts the City Hall and its nice square and some interesting corners from the past: small bahar-shops (recently upgraded to delis), food markets, buildings in neoclassical style reminding that this was actually the old town quarter till even the 1970s, including some residences. The street ends at Omonoia square, the heart of the shopping area in the 1970s, when it used to symbolise the modern lifting of the city. Now Omonoia is still significant in terms of shopping (though it has totally lost its high-end spots and many stores of all kinds are closed to move to the suburb shopping centres), but it's become host of different types of immigrants, a fact that has destroyed the character of the whole area, including Athinas street, esp in its part that is close to Omonoia. Staying at Athinas street can be practical, as many parts of the city are accessible very easily, and also can be a low-budget choice. On the other hand, the street is noisy and parts of it not in the least attractive for tourists.

“For.. road collectors only!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

Before 90's Athinas Str was an interesting greek lumpen street, with lots of venders, hucksters, little shops, porno-cinemas, old cafes (cafeneia) and souvlaki. Nowadays, it hosts people from all over the world who try to create a "today", most of them coloured (by race or dirt or bad fate).. Bums, hookers, junkies and some ordinary day people among them, all along Monastiraki Square to the City Hall of Athens..
