“Perfect for a family! Super clean and convenient!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2010

Travelling with a young family is so much easier if you stay at Athens Studios. Not only is the accommodation very affordable, but it is very convenient. Our apartment was super clean, modern and self contained with a flatscreen TV. The kitchen allowed us to stay in and cook a healthy, home cooked meal for the children which was a nice change after eating out every night for a month (and much cheaper too!) In addition, there is a laundromat downstairs which was a godsend! Next to the laundromat is a sportsman bar which served coffee and breakfast in the morning and cheap beer and entertainment at night. The location was excellent, right in the heart of Athens. Only a few minutes walk to the Acropolis, Museum, Plaka (shopping and restaurants) Monastiraki (Flea Market). There is also a metro train entry just across the road and a great bakery and supermarket down the street. Just ask the Australian owners and they will show you where everything is on the map. They were very helpful and super friendly. During our last stay, they were building an internet cafe next door - if it was up and running when we were there that would have been the icing on the cake. Will definitely stay there again!

We stayed in a four person apartment - it had a small living room, kitchenette, bathroom, and a separate sleeping area with two bunkbeds. Free breakfast of toast and hard boiled eggs every morning. Self-service laundromat downstairs. Really can't beat the price for the value received - housekeeping every day & nice, informative staff to help plan your day. They offer a nice walking tour of the city for only five euros per person-but it's very fast paced-we had a tough time keeping up with the guide-but she provided a great overview. It's less than a five minute walk to the metro, museum, shops, restaurants and the Acropolis. Nice Athenian neighborhood. Athens is a lively city at night - bring earplus if you're a light sleeper - no matter where you end up staying.

My friends and I stayed at the Athens Studios in September for about a week. It was walking distance to the major tourist attractions (e.g. Acropolis), local eateries and public transits. The apartment we stayed in was spacious and very clean (with daily room service). The staff was available 24/7 and friendly. 2 thumbs up!

Seriously cannot fault this place. Staff were friendly and helpful, gave us directions and told us where's good to go. They also organise tours and we did the walking tour which was great value for 5 euros and lasted 2.5 hours. The hotel was very clean and our kitchen was really well equipped with utensils, pots and pans, cleaning stuff, tea, coffee, etc. Cleaning staff cleaned the rooms each day.
On the Monday night there was a pub quiz which packed their sports bar and was really fun. (Especially because we won - French champagne! Not a bad prize either :) ) The bar is great and serves good drinks and has a young crowd.
The breakfast was good value as well (it was included). It wasn't simply continental - eggs were also included, as well as cheese, etc.
The reception was staffed 24-7 and the location was possibly the best in Athens - right next to the Acropolis and the tube station, in the heart of everything.
Our room also had a 5-star bathroom and a balcony - we even had friends over for dinner one night - there was more than enough room to entertain in our studio.
Def book a stay here!

We stayed in Athens for 3 nights. Since we only booked one night in advance, we had to bounce around in the hostel/studios each night, but this enabled us to get a feel for the difference between "Athens Backpackers" and "Athens Studios".

First of all, the service has been wonderful throughout. The Aussie hosts are friendly and helpful (they know the city well!). The Backpackers dorm we stayed in (4 bed) was alright (OK on the cleanliness side, but comfortable enough), and the breakfast was minimal (toast, jam/nutella, hard-boiled eggs and coffee/tea), but the location is AMAZING - literally, a 5 minute walk from the Acropolis in a very clean part of the city.

The second night we stayed in a 6 bed dorm in the Studios building (which is a 5 minute walk from the Backpackers building) and this one was basically the same price, but much roomier and cleaner. We really enjoyed it.

Tonight, we are in a private studio, which is more expensive, but very clean and comfortable. All rooms have an IKEA feel. The latter 2 rooms we stayed in had a mini kitchenette (fridge, stove, sink, a few utensils), but no plates.

All in all, we enjoyed the service we received here, the rooms and the location - again, couldn't be better!

PS - I wrote the same review for "Athens Backpackers" because they are affiliated. It is slightly confusing when booking this place online. Just call them directly if you want to ensure that you're in one building or the other.

Good for its location near the main historical sites of the Acropolis and the related ones on the multi-site €12 "Acropolis Ticket" that tourist/visitors should always buy. You get a generally decent room with a sofa and basic kitchen facilities. The immediate blocks that the Studios and Backpackers are located at have a mix of level and broken pavements - those with roller suitcases beware. The immediate area around the Studios side is undergoing a stage of urban renewal, with roadworks and a new building being constructed. For €105/night, this is certainly over-priced.

The studio that we stayed in was among new units that are still under-going renovation. There were no TVs as advertised (I pointed it out when I politely went over to the office on successive days and was promised that the matter would be looked into. Nothing came of this.) and no cabinets/drawers to keep your clothes and things in (just a clothes rack). No microwave oven that any basic serviced apartment would provide. The included breakfast was simply bread and some little packs of butter/jam/cheese. The new lift (tiny Greek style 2-3 person deal with a 450kg max cap) was broken on the first day and we had to lug our luggage up the spiral staircase.

Access is by contactless card (both for the main building door and your own room door) and you have to make sure that your room door is properly shut (you need to push hard). The ground floor may be a bit of a shock as it is under-going building works - beware the hole leading to the basement. There is a decent mini-mart 2 blocks south along the same road at the same block as the local police post.

Service is generally genial by the mostly Aussie-accented staff. Room maintenance is just to clean the cooking area and the bathroom. You do your own bed and have no fresh towels and bedsheets, whether you have booked for 1 night or 10 nights. There is a coin-operated laundrette on the ground floor. You may save a couple of euros on the dryer by airing your wash on the balcony of your room, where the hot air from the air-con compressor unit as well the dry heat of the Greek summer will do a good job of drying your clothes rapidly. Using the balcony's patio furniture for their original intention can be tricky, what with the hot air from the air-con compressor blowing directly at you due to poor installation facing. The air-con works well though, which we appreciated in the hot Greek summer.

The day tours that are advertised on every door there are cash-only/no receipt deals and you'd better have it done at the main Backpackers hostel than are the Studios office (our booking was "lost" despite being done personally on the Studios side. We only found out when we turned up at the tour time and the surprised tour guide told us that we were not in the list. At least we got a refund.)

Left luggage at the Studios side is basically the unlocked storeroom. Generally safe, subject to the honesty of users.

The Backpackers side looks like a typical and decent establishment that may well be worth the backpacker rates. The Studios is a work-in-progress that is charging above serviced apartment rates for an incomplete "serviced" apartment. The fittings and parts are new but the design is rather bad in many areas (eg watch out how you use the shower, the higher bathroom floor level means that water will flow out onto the marble of the room. Angle your shower head towards the corner and shower carefully at medium flow setting whilst staying by the room corner. The frame of the new bathroom door has no slot for the built-in lock, also remember to pull the door shut firmly). As a trained architect, I found a number of design flaws that simply looked bad.. niggly things that add up to a dilution of the staying experience. As a paid-up visitor, I expected some basic professionalism at the most fundamental of areas, and found it wanting much of the time. There are better-priced alternatives.
