“Great place to stay if travelling on a budget!"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2010

Pros: If you are travelling to Athens on a budget, this hotel is the hotel for you. 1) the location is excellent. It is approx. 3 blocks from Syntagma square and metro stop, A block away from the shopping area Ermou street. 10-15 minutes walk to Monasteraki and Plaka , the busy tourist area. In short, it is walking distance to all major neighborhood to see. The street itself, Metropoleos, is well lit at night, fairly clean, and safe to walk on at night. There is a fair amount of traffic during the day and on the weekends evenings, can have the occasional car blasting their radio as they drive further into town. There is also a great dessert place right on Metropoleos, as you head towards Syntagma. Next to the hotel is a reasonably priced family restaurant that serves really good souvlaki and an awesome greek salad. 2) The building itself is old but kept clean. The rooftop garden has one of the best view of the Acropolis. We brought our snack on the rooftop and had a wonderful time simply resting and taking in the view. As for the room, we were on a budget and opted for a small double bed room with shared bathroom. Our room was on the third floor and it had a decent view of the Acropolis and the main cathedral of Athens. The sheets were clean and the bed a little firm but comfortable. Our room was tiny but it had a big enough armoir to allow us to spread out our things. The window opened quite wide to allow a good breeze but the room is equipped with an AC. Overall, the room was comfortable. 3) The staff were nice. This hotel had the same staff tending to the guests everyday. We liked this because we got to know them and felt more comfortable leaving our valuables in our room. They were also helpful in helping us with the internet connection, directions to many tourists sights and also letting us know useful information such as a general strike on the day we were to leave. They offered to help us make tranportation arrangement to the airport.
Cons: 1) There is only one bathroom for those that have opted to share. The bathroom was cleaned daily, however, some of the guests that were using it, were a little inconsiderate. They would forget to flush, leave huge wad of toilet paper in the bowl (it's common sense not to throw paper in toilets) and leave used towels on the floor. The staff should really check after peak hours to keep the bathroom clean. We strongly suggest to splurge extra on the rooms with the bathroom. If you really are on a budget, simply get to the bathroom early. Also remember to request not to be placed in room 25, as this room is right next to the shared bathroom. 2) If you are a light and sensitive sleeper, the cathedral bell chimes every half an a hour. It's not as bad and you get use to it. We were often so tired from our day that it didn't bother us at all. In fact, it added to the charm of the place. You are after all in Europe.
In general, if you plan on simply finding a safe place that is comfortable, clean, and close to everything, Hotel Metropolis is the place for you!

+ The location of the hotel : one of the best neighborhoods in the heart of Athens. Lots of public transport and activities nearby.
+ The price tag : it may appear high, but for a decent hotel in Athens and that kind of neighborhood is a good amount. We had a room with two beds (a double and a 1.5 bed) for 50 euros. And we were only a couple.
+ The building: it's cute and the owners keep it in a good condition - when we arrived someone was taking care of the paint on the walls. The large Bougainvillea is also a delight.
+ The cleanliness: the furniture was old but it was quite clean, and the bathroom and beds as well. The floor was so clean that it was sliding! The towels were clean as well, although a little rough at touch.
+ The windows and view : the windows have double glass so there is an absence of noises during the night. we had a great sleep. In our room the window was in the whole wall and it provided great light. There were also dark red curtains that were effective for darkening the room. We had a nice view in Mitropoleos street between the beautiful Bougainville's branches. We also had a balcony. Kind of narrow but cute.

- The toilet : when it was flushed ,the water was overflowing. It was kind of disgusting and we had to put down the cap before flushing.
- Hand soap: It was absent, although some shampoo was provided.
- Stairs : Kind of dark but not really a problem.
- The sleepy old gentleman in the reception at nighttime: I can understand that though, since night shifts are difficult. The other receptionists were quite professional.
- Fridge: there wan't a fridge, which was not very handy for storing water or/and fruit juice.

This hotel had a great location in the centre of Athens - everything within walking distance, good restaurants nearby. The hotel was basically clean and the owner helpful. The en suite had just a shower and was VERY small but at least we had our own. The price was good 70 euros a night and 5 more for breakfast. The balcony was also very small - but at least we had one! I would recommend this hotel for a short stay when you will be out most of the time. There was a rooftop breakfast area with a great view of the Acropolis as well.

We stayed for two nights at the end of September in a double room without balcony and with a shared bathroom. We booked over the internet and got two single beds despite booking a double, this happened to us frequently throughout Europe.
I was expecting a budget hotel and therefore wasn't too put out by anything!
The room was definitely basic - the furniture reminded me of boarding school - but the beds were comfy (I prefer a firm bed). There was a small basin (no plug), wardrobe, desk, TV, air conditioning, twin beds and a large window with heaps of sun.
Generally very clean although spoiled by a couple of hairs on the sheets of one of the beds. The top of the wardrobe was very dusty but who puts stuff on the top of a hotel room wardrobe (except me)???
The shared bathroom was on another floor and the shower plughole blocked easily. I managed to shower immediately after it was cleaned and had no problem, but my husband said the bottom of the shower filled up within a minute or two and then water went all over the floor. When I mentioned this to the cleaning staff they went straight away to try to fix it. I didn't go back to check if they were successful. I'm not sure how many rooms shared the bathroom but we never had to wait longer than 10-15 minutes. However the only toilet for our room (and the only toilet available for us to use) was also in that bathroom which was a little annoying.
The rooftop was nice; we didn't have the 5 euro breakfast, but went up in the evening to enjoy the view of the Acropolis.
The front desk staff were excellent - friendly and knowledgeable.
The location cannot be beaten - very close to Syntagma Square, airport transport (bus and metro; we tried both), the Plaka, Acropolis and the Agora. Neither can the price - 50 euro/night for two in the Plaka was awesome value. However next time I think I would pay a little more to have a private bathroom

I did extensive research before booking my hotel in Athens. We were only going to be there 1 night & during the day we were going to be out sightseeing in Athens. 2 things made up my decision, price & location. The reason I gave this hotel 5 stars was because I knew what I was getting into before we arrived. Make no mistakes about it....this is a budget hotel...if you are expecting any over that, you will not be happy.

When we arrived in Greece, the metro was on strike, so we had to take the bus. Because everyone else did too, it was packed & not at all a comfortable ride, but we were told the hotel would be only a few blocks from the bus stop. However, there was a demonstration blocking a few of the streets on the bus route and the driver could not get by, so he just dropped everyone off & we had a bit of a hard time finding the hotel.

We finally found it from the flowers on the outside of the building that is in all the pictures. We ended up using those flowers everytime we couldn't remember how much further we had to walk to the hotel. They let us check in early & were very kind to carry our luggages up the steps. We were on the 2nd floor. The room was VERY basic, but had all the necessities....like another reviewer said, it didn't look dirty, just old. The balcony was nice sized and although we had no view, it was nice to sit out there after coming in from our day of sightseeing and just people watch. The beds were fine, as well as the shower. At this hotel, it is all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!!!! It is steps from the Plaka, Syntagma & Monastiraki. There are great restaurants nearby as well as shops. The service here is also wonderful. The young man at the front desk was very kind with every question we asked....even one as stupid as helping us use a phone card we had bought to call home. There was a breakfast on the roof for 5 euros, but we did not try it. We instead went down the street to a small cafe for some coffee and yummy yogurt, even though they don't eat this for breakfast, it was a great treat for us!!!!

On the day of our check out we had a late night flight and they offered to store our luggage in the closet for us. This day the metro was back at work, and it was just a block or two to the station from the hotel. And a great ride to the airport.

If I did come back to Athens, I would definitely stay here again. I would recommend this hotel in a heartbeat for someone who wants to explore Athens & not spend all their money on a hotel.

I found this hotel while I was walking in the area and the HUGE tree outside got my attention. Rooms are not big but are very clean and have a fantastic view to the Acropolis. The view is even better from the roof top where breakfast is served. Front desk is very helpfull, especially Kostas, that is usually there during the day. My stay there was pleasant and I would reccommend this place to anyone that needs a basic hotel right in the center of everything. The value for money is also somehting to consider this place is the cheapest in the area.

We stayed for one night at the beginning of our Greece trip before heading off to various islands, and stayed for 3 additional nights on the tail end of our trip before heading home. We found the hotel very easily from the Metro our first night, after 34 hours of no sleep. We found the gentleman who greeted us that evening very courteous and helpful. We also found the others working at the reception desk very friendly - we were happily provided restaurant recommendations and quick routes to different areas of the city.
On both stages of our trip our rooms were very clean, comfortable, and what we were expecting. This is not a luxurious hotel, but when travelling in Athens for the first time, we had no intentions of spending more time in our room than necessary, thus we found that for our money we were not disappointed. The view from the balcony at breakfast (5 euro each, worth it for one breakfast, but we had gotten a little tired of the same style breakfasts so in Athens we didn't take breakfast at our hotel) is incredible. To get to the balcony you take the small lift to the 5th floor, then get off and take a flight of stairs. Very worth it - and it would be great for an evening snack and drink too. The bathrooms were quite small, but about average for our trip. Other than a lack of electrical outlets (we needed one for the camera battery charger so we unplugged the A/C for a few hours) the only real downside for the hotel was really, really hard towels. They were really clean, but ouch. The location of this place was great - we walked everywhere we wanted to, and the metro was so close. The morning we left we had a very early flight so we took the x95 to the airport - less than 5 minute walk from the hotel. If you are looking for a clean, basic room in an ideal location of Athens to see the major sites, and you can sleep on any type of bed, this should suit you fine.
