“Great Hotel - Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

I stayed here a total of 8 days - great hotel and great location. The staff were friendly and there was never a problem with the room or service. The rooftop patio has an amazing view of the Acropolis.

Central Hotel in the Plaka area has a great location. We walked everywhere we went during our stay in Athens. Shopping, dining, sightseeing – this area has it all.

The hotel itself is nothing fancy. We were in a partial Acropolis view and it was really quite a nice view. But in the end, how much time do you honestly spend looking out a window in your hotel room? The Acropolis view side of the hotel faces a school and it does get fairly noisy around 08:30, but when we didn’t have anything planned in the morning, we were able to sleep through it.

We had a queen sized bed which was quite firm, but we slept well in it. There wasn’t much space to maneuver in the room once you put 2 suitcases in it though. The mini fridge was nice as we were able to put some leftover pizza in it from Mystic Pizza (see my separate review on that – a real gem!). The bathroom was clean and served our purposes fine. The internet also worked very well throughout the entire hotel and we had no difficulties getting connected.

Breakfast though – breakfast was…well, it was just bad. It is our favorite meal of the day so it was very disappointing to see how poor it was. There was some stale bread for toasting, some fresh bread to make sandwiches out of (not really my thing for breakfast), some cheese and cold meat, sugary cereal, rotten fruit, scrambled eggs with cheese that were like rubber and tasted the same, hard-boiled eggs that were cold and so overdone almost the entire yolk was grey, cold sausages that tasted worse than the eggs, and yoghurt. The yoghurt was actually my saving grace as you could put some walnuts and a couple of dried fruits on it, which tided me over until lunch. It was the exact same, all 4 days, in terms of quality and what was offered. A tip – go early as things aren’t quite as cold, just warm. You can also take the hot water for tea and put your hard-boiled eggs in them for 5-10 minutes to heat them up.

Would we stay there again? Probably not, but that’s not because we didn’t have an OK room and a comfortable stay. I think for the same price you could probably find something a bit nicer.

Thank you for your review on our hotel. We are happy that you found our location helpful and you had the opportunity to visit Athens and most of its well-known points of interest easily. We have been making changes to improve our breakfast buffet selection in terms of product variety and good quality so that is why we have included different types of bread and cereals, croissants, strudels, cookies, cakes, cheeses, cold cuts and sausages, eggs, mushrooms, fresh and drained fruits and of course some typical Greek breakfast products like yogurt (full fat and light), feta and anthotiro (ricotta type creamy cheese) cheeses, spoon sweets and rizogalo (rice pudding). We are really sorry that in your case things didn’t represent our intentions so we will make sure that more effort will be given in this area.

3 things stand out for this hotel: It looks pretty new (probably just renovated or built) and clean + it has a great terrace bar for drinks overlooking the acropolis + fairly good location.

That probably sums up the overall experience i got from staying in this hotel. The lobby has a great waiting area which I think is heavily under-utilized because i suspect it is hidden at one corner of the hotel, but I found this place a great place to chill out with big couch and a huge TV showing BBC on my last day waiting for my transfer to airport.

The hotel is conveniently located in Plaka, which is a big tourist place and near syntagma square where the parliament is. I could get to all the places of attraction by walking and did not have to take any metro at all. It is along one narrow quiet street which again is away from the main flea market street and away from hustle and bustle which i liked. Area is also quite safe. Only thing i didnt like was that there are 2 restaurants just round the corner of the hotel and they tout tourist loudly for business. After the first day, we just avoided walking past that small street.

Service staff polite and helpful in providing directions.

Breakfast is served complementary but i think the hotel could do better with refilling of drinks. When I was there, all the juices and water cans were empty and no one filled it up for a good 30-45min! Is this trying to save water or what? Other that that, breakfast spread was ok, not too fantastic but can fill your stomach.

Rooms were small but clean, nice bathroom. I ordered for a queen size bed but they gave me 2 single beds combined as I could feel the divider in the middle when sleeping. Not good! Wi-fi was complimentary but quite weak in the rooms. Best place for wi-fi is at lobby or breakfast area.

Hotel has only one small lift that can only fit 2-3 persons...smallest hotel lift i ever seen in all my travels. I had to walk the stairs in some cases because sick of waiting for the next one.

Hotel has great terrace bar and offers a great night view of acropolis over a couple of drinks with friends or your partner.

There are around some great restaurants around the hotel like Mono.

All in all, comparing it to some other hotels which we walked past in athens (some not in great locations, some looked old etc), i think this hotel is one of the better ones around and value for money.

Thank you for your review on our hotel. The area around is quite vivid with nice places to eat or have a drink and of course we are located next to all major attractions. We are in the process of improving internet signal quality and speed. We are sorry for any inconvenience that you had during breakfast but we hope that next time you stay with us you will have an even better experience.

The hotel is centrally located. it is clean, and has good breakfasts. Bathrooms are small, but for us they were functional and fine. On our day of departure we got coffee and some food even though it was before breakfast time. That was much appreciated.
We had a room with a partial view of the acropolis, for which we paid a little more.
Best of all is the roof top bar from which you have a great view of the acropolis, day and night. Have a drink, or coffee ,and admire the Acropolis all lit up at night. I would recommend not paying extra for a room with a view because the view from the room is only a partial view. Instead save your money for a drink with a view.
Overall, we enjoyed the hotel very much.

We stayed in this hotel twice before and came back again as it is in such a great location and the rooms are really nice.

There family rooms are great. You get two rooms at the end of the corridor and they have an external door which blocks off the corridor so you have the run of the two rooms. Quite often in Europe a family room means 4 beds lined up in 1 room so this was a nice change. The rooms are quite small but really clean and have everything you need.

We were only here for one night this time but in the past have used the roof top patio which overlooks the acropolis and gives you a beautiful view.

Location is fantastic, you can walk everywhere and we felt extremely safe.

We had an early departure so unfortunately didn't get the breakfast but last year it was great.

Check in was easy and the staff really helpful.

Would defintely stay here again.

Room Tip: Family rooms are great.
