We just returned from a 14-day trip to Greece. Athens was at the tail-end of our trip after 5 nights in Naxos and another 5 in Santorini. booked the Art Hotel through their website after comparing rates with other travel websites such as Orbitz. We got a reasonable price of 129 Euro/night for a 1 bedroom after looking at other hotels with similar positive reviews. We chose the hotel based on other traveler's reviews and were very happy with our stay.
Directions from Athens airport: we took the metro from the Athens airport to Syntagma which took about 45 minutes, transferred to the red metro line 2 direction Aghios Antonios and got off at Omonia square after 2 stops. After exiting the metro station, make sure to locate the 3rd September street (Tritis Septemvriou in Greek) . This street is a major street with a decent side walk, easy to wheel your luggage. You can cut to a side street to your left from there over to Marni street where the hotel is located. If you miss the side street like we did, you will eventually run into Marni but it's a longer route.
On our arrival at around 10pm, the staff was very eager to help with luggage, giving us sight-seeing and restaurant tips and immediately offered complimentary drinks and a handy pocket map of Athens.
Our room, #304 was spacious enough with a queen-size, 2 night stands, a desk, a hanging closet and a tall stand on which sat the flat screen TV. The only problem was the lack of closet space to put away our clothes. The hanging closet had about 6 or 7 hangers but no drawers so we ended up leaving most of the clothes in the suitcase.
The bathroom was clean but a little tight and again offered no counter space to put our toiletries and nowhere to hang the towels. The only rod was on the wall of the tub which could not be used if you're in the shower. The shower was a hand-held type and the shower curtain did not prevent a lot of water spills on the floor. There was a smell in the bathroom which I believe was due to cigarette smoking. After opening all the windows and getting the room ventilated, the smell was less noticeable.
There was a lot of street noise from the windows but the room had double windows and the minute both were shut, it was very quiet.
My overall comment of our room is that it was spacious enough by European standards but not ideally laid out. The furniture did not provide enough closet space. The room was clean but not immaculate as there were some small particles inside the drawers.
The breakfast was included in the price and more than adequate. The staff was always checking that there was enough food. The dining room was very nicely decorated and clean. Breakfast was truly abundant: freshly-baked croissants and other pastries, fruits, yogurt, all sorts of cereals, fresh bread, cold cuts and cheese, scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, delicious sauteed mushrooms, jam, butter, tea, coffee. The hotel also has complimentary tea and coffee available all day which was really nice.
Location: I think the location was perfect, far enough from the tourist crowd but within walking distance of the main attractions. We did not use the metro, walked everywhere. On our first day, we walked to the Parliament building to see the change of guards and it took no more than 10 mins. We walked to Omonia square many times and also to Syntagma and all the way to the Acropolis and back. If you have good shoes, walking is ideal as the metros are often very crowded and you'd miss the little shops along the way. The weather was ideal during our stay in May.
If you want the best prices for food, bottles of water, drinks, wine, etc.. there is a supermarket chain called Champion that is not far from Omonia. It opens at 8am and closes at 9pm and also closed on Sundays.
