“Great for our needs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

We stayed at the Melia at the end of our honeymoon for 2 nights before heading back home. It was quite a ride from the airport, but easy and not too bad in a taxi. The hotel set it up for us, so that took away a huge headache of navigating transportation. They even had a taxi waiting for us at 3am when we needed to head back to the airport. The hotel was in a good location, easy walk to the main attractions. We were there in October, and it was pretty sketchy at night because there were what looked like swat teams on the corners of every street, so I would recommend to use the rooftop restaurant after dark instead of wandering. The rooftop view of the acropolis was awesome. We didnt have a chance to use the pool or the spa, but both looked amazing. The restaurant was very overcrowded (i'm sure the other guests had the same concerns we did), and there were only two servers working. Just be sure to grab a drink at the bar before you sit down and you'll be fine waiting, just take in the view! Overall we had a comfortable stay. We would definitely stay here again.

The Athens Melia has all a perfect hotel would need, even though in a decaying period and a decaying area, but as long as you enter the lobby you forget the crisis and step into a world of peace and indulgment. The hotel has beautifully furnished and comfortable rooms, but what really sets it apart is the service and the kindness of the staff, should you ask anything, The beds are comfortable, the bathroom also beautiful, although mine had no hairdryer which must have been a mistake. The location is also perfect, close to Omonia square, a major hub. The area may not be the best neighbourhood but there are always lots of people on the street so it feels completely safe. Just one thing, the hotel may be hard to find from the metro stop (although really close to it ), as four big roads with difficult names start from Omonia, and the keycard has no address on it... and the hotel recently changed names and everyone seems to know it by the old name.So make sure you know the street address before you go out. Otherwise, perfect in every sense.

The Melia is a rather new hotel with all its comforts, including a roof-top terrace which takes your breath away. Here you may have a drink or eat a full wonderful meal, especially since there are no restaurants nearby. The area where the Melia is located is under change; there are a lot of establishments closed. during the day we felt safe walking to the museum or the nearly square,
ΣΤ.ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑΣ square, where one can catch tour buses and subways M1/M2, to see the city. At night, we did not go out but spent them at the roof-top restaurant relaxing after a day of walking and touring. Also, the staff was very helpful when there was a taxi strike and some friends of ours needed to catch transportation to go to their cruise vessel; the staff got a hotel car to take them and some other guests to the cruise vessel. Will retrun to the Melia on our next visit.

Location
Located very near the Omonia Square metro station. Also within 5-10 minutes walking distance of the major attractions of Athens- Plaka, Syntagma Square, Monastiraki etc. There are 2 bakery shops within 1 minute of the place which open up early in the morning and serve the most delectable pastries, croissants, coffee etc. The best one is on the corner of 28th October Street and Panepistimiou and the 2nd one just before that towards the hotel. Couldn't get the names as they were written in Greek.
If your intention is to see the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, the new Museum of the Acropolis and be in the Plaka-Syntagma-Kolinaki area then this is a perfect place to stay. It is 5 minutes (walk) out but then gives you the perspective of everything around this place.
Service
Had a speedy check-in and check-out. Only ordered once- a coffee. The staff at the reception were very friendly - Dimitra and Ann especially.
Room
We stayed in an executive room which had a small living room with a sofa-bed bed where the kids slept. The bathroom had a jacuzzi which we didn't use. The toiletries very varied and good. The room itself was clean, decently large. What I didn't see (and I guess didn't require) is someone to take our to/from the room/reception area. We carried it ourselves but there was no offer either.

Cost/Value
Exceptional. Of course for us it was even better since I redeemed miles and only paid for the upgrade to the Executive Suite but even without that it was coming to Euro 285 for 3 nights which wasn't bad- a tad on the higher side considering that this was in the thick of winters.

Would I go again
To Athens of course. To the hotel- most probably. It would depend on the deals running at that time.

We stayed for 5 days here and we did have problems of getting around because of a strike (Omonia square nearby) one day. In the other hand the surroundings are not very safe during evening/night and anyhow it is advisable to look well after your belongings as they say in metro... The rooms are ok, the restaurant has not to offer a lot. The breakfast is basic nothing special. I would say that it is not a good location at all. I definitely stayed better, not a great experience.

On a short stay in Athens during my honeymoon (primarily in Santorini and Mykonos), I and my wife stayed at Melia Athens. The hotel room was fantastic - ours was a room with a jacuzzi. I particularly liked the wooden finish to the entire room. The hotel terrace is really amazing - with a good view of the Acropolis of Athens and the Lycabettus hill. The breakfast spread was lavish and delicious - yoghurt with honey was my favorite (as it turned out to be so at every other places in Greece as well!).

The nearby location was nothing fancy, but honestly it did not matter me much. We returned from Plaka (very nice place) at almost midnight and did not feel threatened, unlike what I saw in the reviews about safety and all. The heat was oppressive during the daytime (40 degrees during our stay), when we went to visit the Acropolis, and Temple of Zeus. But never mind - we always had the jacuzzi, where we could relax! :-)
