We planned carefully for our trip to Athens this July 2006. We were meeting family there and all planning to stay in the Plaka district at the Adrian Hotel. We had reserved, placed a deposit and confirmed a reservation for a room through a web site called Trav in April 2006 for 4 nights June 30th through July 4th, 2006. We had been in Greece for two weeks and a half weeks when we returned to Athens and arrived via the Metro dragging all our bags to the Adrian. The Adrian is a lovely hotel in the wonderful Plaka district. My brother checked in with no problem, he had made his reservations only one month prior on another web site. When we tried to register, we were told there was a problem with our reservation and Trav had overbooked their "allotment". We were being transferred to another hotel owned by the same company who owns the Adrian, called the Jason Prime. Both hotels, along with the Jason Inn and King Jason in Athens are owned by a company called Douros Hotels. We were informed that the Jason Prime was a much nicer hotel and our room was being upgraded at no extra cost. After a long days journey by ferry we were just glad to have a hotel set up and not be left stranded. Little did we know. We had taken the Metro form Piraeus to save some money and now had to fork out 10 euros to take a cab to the Jason Prime which was no where near the Plaka district or our family. The Jason Prime is located in the Omonia district on a small and dark side street. When we got to the hotel we were very disappointed. The neighborhood was very dirty and seedy. There was a 3 foot pile of garbage outside the front door for the entire 4 days we stayed there. Day or night there was a plethora of unsavory appearing immigrants, all hanging around the square across the street from the hotel. We personally saw numerous drug and sex transactions going on at all hours but especially in the evening as we came and went for dinner. Leaving the hotel one morning we nearly stepped on a used syringe on the street just outside the hotel's revolving door. Our hotel was at least 5 blocks from the Metro station and in order to spend time with our family, be able to siesta and redress for late dinners, we ending up taking the Metro 4-6 times per day in 102 degree weather and even during an unusual and unexpected downpour. Fortunately, the Plaka was only one Metro stop away from us, this at least was bearable as we also had another 5 block walk to meet our family after getting off the Metro at Plaka. The Jason Prime Hotel itself was clean and neat inside. The staff at the front desk was helpful and polite. The bar staff did not speak English well and were not very familiar with the drink menu and this made for some interesting cocktails. They were strong at least. Our room # 610 was very nice but not a big upgrade as compared to the Adrian. Breakfast was included at 140 euros per night and consisted of 4 kinds of cooked eggs, bread, muffins, bacon, sausage, fruits, cereals, juice, honey, yogurt and even Greek salad! It was self serve and tasted great. However the coffee was not self serve and the service was slow for getting the first cup and refills. There was no other restaurant except the breakfast buffet and this was only open 6:30 am to 10 am . The bad part of the breakfast area was they had 2 decorative arches leading into the food area. The arch is about 6 foot high and my husband is 6'5". He hit his head really hard on the arch (it was not marked). It really shocked him as well as all the staff and patrons and gave him a terrible headache and ruined his morning. The rooms had good air conditioning and the bathroom was very small. The tub was difficult to get in and out of due the high sides and poor placement of grab bars. The view from room # 610 was horrible and was definitely not up to par with the view of the Parthenon from the Adrian. We talked with guests in the lobby and bar that had been upgraded the same as we were from other hotels including other Dourous hotels. This made us wonder if this is how they fill the Jason Prime as no one would chose to stay there once they saw the neighborhood, especially not the families with children we saw there. The beds were comfortable and the daily maid service very efficient. It was only one metro stop to the National Archeological Museum, which was convenient. It cost us only 21 euros to go from the Jason Prime to the Airport when we left which made us wonder why the trip from the Adrian the first day was 10 euros. Despite the horrible neighborhood, we still managed to have a great time in Athens. We kept telling ourselves the extra walking was good exercise and we probably saw more of the real side of Athens (including it's underbelly) during the many trips we made back and forth then we would have otherwise. My husband and I are very street savvy and did not feel unsafe unless we took a wrong turn on the walk back to the Jason Prime from the Metro. I would never have willingly agreed to stay here and it was a huge disappointment but when life gives you lemons you just got to make lemonade.
