I stayed for two night earlier this week, on business.
First impressions were pretty poor. The hotel is in a shabby part of town, at a very busy, dusty, modern road intersection.
The room was OK, but not to 5* standard. The retrofit low-energy lighting was not bright enough, especially in the bathroom. After the first night, they took my wet towels away, but failed to provide replacements.
On the second morning I was awoken early by housekeeping bursting into my room and turning on the lights. Ten minutes later they did it again so I gave in and got up. When I complained, the manager appeared to take it seriously, telling me he was going to "kick some butt" (maybe he thought I was American) but never got back to me. I later discovered that several of my fellow guests had had the same experience.
The breakfast was no better than average, with unpleasant non-fresh orange juice. We ordered some freshly squeezed orange juice which was eventually provided rather grudgingly. I didn't detect a single smile from the staff at any point during breakfast.
Even though it was 25C outside, the much publicized roof terrace was permanently closed during my stay, and so the only way to get fresh air was to stand outside the front door, amongst the traffic.
This was my first visit to Athens, and I thought the city was fantastic. I can't wait to return, but I'll be staying somewhere else. This is a fairly cheap, average hotel which flatters to deceive. If they called it a 3*, visitors would arrive with the right expectations, and would probably leave much happier.
