“Soulless”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

The usual tourist fare (or should I say fair as in carnival). Overpriced restaurants and tourist trinket outlets abound. There's obviously been a lot of effort taken to make this a clean and safe tourist environment but I somehow feel that some of the soul is missing. This is not the place to visit if you want to experience the 'typical' Athens.

“An interesting, if overly touristy, experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Having been to Athens twice, one must spend a day or two in the plaka, shopping and stopping for lunch or dinner. It's a very pleasant experience, however, for my money, it's a little bit "Disney" for me. Most stalls are all selling the same narrow selection of tourist items, sitting down for lunch or dinner is a pleasant experience.. but at the end of the day, you walk away with a bit of a sense that the experience is somewhat fabricated for the benefit of foreign tourists and comes off a little bit like a visit to Epcot.

The Acropolis is amazing as is the Acropolis museum, and I wouldn't say the Plaka is an unpleasant experience.. spend a day or two there, but that's more than enough.

“Touristy for sure”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

If ever there is one place that is for the tourist it is the Plaka area. Not a great fan personally but if you love to shop - there is heaps of choices here. Plenty of restaurants - some very pleasant. Try and get off the main drags a bit for some really good restaurants where food is the passion - no money

“Touristy, but interesting.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Crowded streets with lots of jewelry and souvenir shops and furriers, which I thought was curious, especially being in the middle of a city in a warm climate. Found a nice, quiet taverna for dinner with the help of a local. Food was delicious. Many other tavernas on the main shopping streets. But beware the owners practically chasing you down the street trying to get you to eat at their establishments. Felt safe as long as we stayed on the busy streets.
