This hotel is very basic and therefore cheap and not in the best area of Athens as it is surrounded by sex shops and the streets are pretty dirty. Having said that, the area has a lot of character and there are some very cool bars at the end of the road before you reach Plaka. The Plaka area and Acropolis is within walking distance. If you are on a tight budget and don't mind slumming it for a couple of days then this place is OK. We paid 93Euro for a twin for 2 nights in September 2009.

I stayed at this hotel in August 2007 for three nights. I was traveling alone and got a single room which was very basic and clean. For sixty US dollars a night I can't complain especially since breakfast is included. The staff are very nice and are willing to point things out on a map and give you directions. The breakfast they offered was very decent enough to keep me full until late afternoon which really saved me money on food.

The neighborhood around the hotel is not as bad as everyone says it is. I walked there at all hours of the day and no one meant any harm. The street is full of merchants and street vendors selling cheep goods not drug addicts and gangsters. I don't understand why the other reviewers are so freaked out.

My friend and I (both single women in our mid-20s) were put here by our travel agent. First big sign something was wrong: As we were navigating the Omonoia Square Neighborhood trying to find the hotel (and looking like the typical American tourists with our big backpacks and map) a police officer stopped us and asked if he could help us. After explaining where we were trying to go, the officer pointed us in the right direction and said "Now you girls be careful over there." When we turned on Menandrou street, we understood what he meant. The street was full of men, more than I had ever seen in one place before, many of whom were obviously on drugs and staring at us. We saw the sign for the hotel and got inside, and thankfully the hotel had the internet. We found a hotel in the Plaka neighborhood and high-tailed it out of there. While the Amayllis Inn itself seemed fine for budget travelers, it definately would not have been safe for my friend and I to walk in that neighborhood.

  • Liked — It had the internet so we could find a different place to stay!
  • Disliked — Feeling like I would get assaulted when I stepped out of the hotel

i can not advise people strongly enough not to stay here. i walked down the street to the hotel as no taxi will go to this area as they say its not safe enough for them to do so. i asked police directions and they said not to stay here as it is the capital street of violent crimes and has the highest murder rate than anywhere in athens.
as i walked down the street there were hundreds of gangs all either shooting up with injections, or with knives or guns. men were walking down the road urinating with all on full view for us all to see.
i was followed into the hotel by a few lads with knives who were trying to get into my small case i had with me.
the hotel rooms was smelly and dirty with mould over all the bathroom pipes and most pipes were celotaped together as was the tv controller and the air con unit, dried blood everywhere.
the hotel was full of prostitutes and the hotelier was obviously trying to stay on the good side of the thugs as he was more helpful to them than us. he did say though it is safe to go out of the hotel only after 8pm as the street is then quieter, he was right as the druggies were in our hotel with the prostitutes.
thankfully i got hold of my travel agent back home and they moved us to another hotel as i could not stay at this one.
i would not even recommend my worst enemy to stay at this hotel or area and hope no one ever has to go through this experience.

put quite simply the other reviews sum the situation up very accurately but i will add my two bobs worth.. the street is dangerous and smells like urine, there are thugs that crowd the road right in front of the establishment, they will eye you off very closely while you check in and out, there are drug dealers and prositutes in plain view, there are constant fights and police intervention, you can not safely leave your hotel by foot and cab drivers are very reluctant to go to this area, the noise is SHOCKING, the smell of the rooms is really bad, it is not worth the saving, please contact me as i have taken video footage from the first floor of the building (where it was safe to do so), we had booked and paid for 6 nights in advance but we forfeited all our money and left immediately and stayed somewehre much nicer and for the same cost, the owner is rude and not helpful.... there is nothing worth staying at this place for, and in my opinion any web site that advertises it (quickbeds or lastminute) should be held responsible for any mishaps to travellers as a result of bookings made through their service
