My family and I visited Athens in mid-August and we stayed at the King George. We booked through Leading Hotels of the World .
We booked two deluxe rooms, because King George would not allow our agent to book any more of an upgrade. Our agent told us that King George reservationists suggested the bottom 6 floors of the hotel as an upgrade/deluxe situation.
When we arrived , we were shown our deluxe rooms.
Wow , they had much to be desired, considering that this is , supposedly, a LHW. The two rooms were on the third floor and very dark. We really felt as if we were in a basement..
The two rooms were also smokey. The manager quickly said that he could either send maid service back in to try to work on the smell, or we could upgrade to a suite for a price.
Actually, the price was not that bad.
We moved up to , I believe, the 11th floor. Beautiful.
Beautiful views. Lovely attached apartment for our teenagers.
It really was a scrumptious situation, with gorgeous balcony views.
There is a pool, in the basement.
Here , again, it was dark.
Kind of odd.
Especially in August.
The 'workout area' consisted of two machines, facing each other and bumping up against the hair salon.
Very uncomfortable situation--especially if you are on one machine and a stranger is on the other. You are face-to-face.
This entire workout/spa/pool arrangment just didn't warrent a five star/leading hotel rating.
Because it was mid-August, the management decided to close the pool for two of the four days we were there in order to clean it.
But, they kindly allowed our children and my husband and I to use the Presidential Suite's outdoor pool. He said that since we were in one of the smaller suites, that this was possible.
For our private use.
Breathtaking!
It was a fantastic infinity pool and a stunning deck area, looking out on to the Parthenon and other ruins.
I have to say, what made our visit so lovely at this hotel was the concierge.
Without them, I believe our stay would have been very disappointing.
DO NOT book the rooms below the 6th floor.
They are depressing. Beautiful appointments. But dark.
If you can upgrade, do so.
Be aware of the basement pool situation.
And that guests, not booked in the presidential suite, cannot actually use the top floor outdoor pool.
The accomodation , next door, at the Bretagne, is certainly more in keeping with current standards of 5-star hotels around the world.
I would love to say, oh-this is just Europe and rooms are smaller, or people smoke more, or ...
But, let's face facts. This is not Europe, or Athens, circe 1980's.
And Athens is just a fabulous city!
And travelers , who book five star hotels , throughout the world, have certain expectations.
King George must do something , at least about its pool/workout/spa area.
Against the background of the Grand Bretagne, well, it just isn't
the same.
And they are right next to one another.
So, thanks to the wonderful concierge at the King George.
Gracious. Excellent recommendations for dinners and lunches.
Kind to the kids. The upgrades. Giving us access to the outdoor private pool.
It was because of your service , that our stay was truly memorable at your hotel.
But, I somehow feel we lucked out.
And I just would hesitate to recommend this hotel as a five-star, for other travelers.
Hope this helps.
