“Monastiraki is the center of tourism in Athens with many kebab restaurants.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2014

Monastiraki is full of tourists during nights. The nearby restaurants serves the hungry tourists. The only negative is that is dirty. The trash bins are very a few and full o rubbish. Near shops and restaurants you want find any to throw the trash. It is a pity because Monastiraki is truly beautiful.

“Lively!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2014

This is a lively, buzzing area of the city with plenty of shops and restaurants selling amazing Greek cuisine. Lots of nice bars too where you can just sit in the sun and people watch. A lovely area to just wander and soak up the Athenian atmosphere.

“Not what it used to be.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2014

Monastiraki area and the flea market is for sure something you can't miss if you are visiting Athens. The view of Parthenon and the crowded little shops will keep you busy. But in the other hand, the experience changed a lot with the economic situation and its preety obvious on the way the area is maintained. Greece government, should always keep an eye on places like this, even if lack of money makes it harder.

“The Center of Things”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2014

In all my walking and wandering this was the square where I often returned to. Great food both quick and leisurely, shopping nearby of the flea market and tres chic variety, the Acropolis overhead in the background and at night the square is filled with music and lively people. I ate at two of the restaurants on the entrance to the Mitropoleus and enjoyed them both. Also, if you're looking for wifi, the Starbucks is just two blocks up Mitropoleus. The Rick Steve's free audio walking tour of this area starts up at Syntagma square and is a nice way to get oriented when you first start exploring Athens.
