My wife and I stayed in the Airotel Parthenon after having spent a week in Santorini. We booked the hotel last minute after realizing that there wasn't 10 days worth of stuff to do in Santorini so we took 3 days and went to Athens. We chose Airotel basically because of its availability and the price.
Here's the breakdown of our experience:
- VERY easy to get to, there is a metro (subway) station that goes about 300 feet from the hotel entrance right from the airport. The metro is clean, and feels very safe. A day pass was quite cheap too and gets you all over the city in no time at all.
We arrived on a flight in at 01:23 so the metro was closed and we were forced to take a taxi.
- Make sure you ask 2-3 cabbies about the fare price, they will try to charge you up to 50 euro, when the ride should only cost 30. People behind us in line for cabs got a bit upset at us asking around, but for 20 euro it's worth it! It's also a good idea to know the general direction that the cabbie should be headed to get to the Acropolis area, ours took a 'wrong turn' getting there.... c'mon!
- The front desk staff at the Airotel were very helpful. They found us menus for delivery restaurants, and patiently mapped out where we wanted to go in great detail.
- The rooms are as basic as you can get. The 'king' bed is literally 2 singles pushed together, complete with separate bedding and everything... there is about 2 feet of space all around the bed and that's it, no room for walking around or a sitting area. The rooms kind of smelled like cat pee and every morning we awoke to doors slamming at like 6am. This is because of how the doors close here, not because of rude people. Bathrooms were fine, nothing to complain about, and everything felt pretty clean. A/C worked really well, this was really helpful since the pollution and people smoking in Athens really irritated our allergies.
- There is no pool, no hot tub, but there is an american buffet included for breakfast which we really enjoyed.
- Location is key... you're close (like under 5 minutes) to everything that is worth seeing in Athens (Acropolis, Plaka, Temple of Zeus and of course the metro)
We would recommend this place, but if you want to be entertained at the hotel itself. (Although we spent almost a whole day in the room watching movies on our laptop)
Just for context:
- My wife and I are 28 years old, pretty adventurous, not used to luxury hotels by any means, but are decently well off that we expect a certain level of quality wherever we go. We research everything we do and are diligent about how we spend our money.
