This was a very decent hotel near most of Athens top sights and activities. Of course I read the reviews here and on Matts site, which were both right on and representative. Decided to pull the trigger since the price was right, and I was simply tired of reading hotel reviews.
Arrived at the hotel at 4AM after a 21 hour travel ordeal from Seattle and dropped our bags in their creepy but safe storage area. Since we couldnt check in that early, we wandered around the Monastiraki and Plaka till we could check in at 9AM. Although the neighborhood is dumpy, like most of Athens, we felt safe (safer than in downtown Seattle). Lots to see right around the hotel even at 5AM. Seeing the sunrise over the nearby ruins and watching the central market open up was something to behold and I'm glad we did.
We finally checked in at 9AM and got a room on the 6th floor on the front, facing Athinas street. The balcony had a good view of the Parthenon. We immediately fired up the very adequate AC and slept till 5PM. No noise from the street bothered us at all, although after 26 hours of travel, I dont think anything would have woken us!
The room was basic, but with plenty of space, clean and nice. Newish laminate wood flooring, small fridge, safe, funky but working hairdryer, small desk, couple of chairs. The bed was stiff, like most of the ones we had in Greece. Tiny TV only got a few channels. Bathroom was small but OK. Rooftop bar nice, super view but they couldnt make a cosmo or a margarita. Breakfast was OK, nothing really special, Guest computers were slow but functioned. There are tiny elevators that hold two people at most. (The stairs are made of marble though and are quite amazing).
Staff was extremely friendly and provided excellent service at all times. They went out of their way to help us on more than one occasion, not the least of which was getting us into a room at 9AM!. Most of the Guests we encountered were American, including tour groups with teenagers and older folks.
Best part is proximity to good food, the subway, central market, shopping, and major sights just steps away. We walked to Parthenon in 20 minutes. The Monastiraki subway stop is about 200 feet from the front door of the hotel. Plaka is 10 minutes away. There are about 100 restaurants within easy walking distance, I would recommend one called "Metro" that is right on Monastiraki Square. Also, just up Athinas street between the Market and Omonia square is a Champion grocery store for snacks and etc.
I would absolutely stay here again.
