Took my wife off for a surprise 5 day break to celebrate our wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Intercontinental.
I have been visiting Athens for about 10 years on business and stayed in a number of hotels, however none comes close to this one.
I appreciate that business and holiday travellers have different requirements, however both are catered for quite adequately, in my opinion.
If you can afford it, I would recommend staying in a Club Room. The Club lounge is a little oasis to just chill. It has a great patio with superb views of the Acropolis and there was nothing nicer than sitting out there at 7pm each night, with a glass of wine and a cooling breeze!
The lounge is also used for a lovely breakfast and has sandwiches and cakes available most of the afternoon.
The staff are great and incredibly helpful.
Much has previously been made about the location; it is not that bad really - there is an underground station about 10 mins walk away. But to be honest, taxis are the best way to get round; they are plentiful and cheap. There is also a daily hotel shuttle bus to Syntagama Square.
Tips: Beach: If you want a to spend time at a nice beach, visit the Astir Beach at Vouliagmeni. It's 20km away and will cost no more than €20. Entrance is €25 per person, which may sound steep, however you are paying for excellent facilities. The beach is spotlessly clean and the water is beautifully clear. There is Starbucks inside and a TGI's. Lots of good sunbeds with shade. We spent two very relaxing days there and would recommend it.
Tips: Dining: Great fish restaurant in Plaka, not far from the hotel, called Psaras. Hotel will book for you. Ask the waiter to show you what fresh fish they have on offer.
Tips: Dining: Another fish restaurant - Jimmy The Fish in Piraeus. Fantastic location in the harbour. Once again, you need to book. Great food and service. Also, lots of lively bars in Piraeus.
