Took my wife off for a surprise 5 day break to celebrate our wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Intercontinental.
I have been visiting Athens for about 10 years on business and stayed in a number of hotels, however none comes close to this one.
I appreciate that business and holiday travellers have different requirements, however both are catered for quite adequately, in my opinion.
If you can afford it, I would recommend staying in a Club Room. The Club lounge is a little oasis to just chill. It has a great patio with superb views of the Acropolis and there was nothing nicer than sitting out there at 7pm each night, with a glass of wine and a cooling breeze!
The lounge is also used for a lovely breakfast and has sandwiches and cakes available most of the afternoon.
The staff are great and incredibly helpful.
Much has previously been made about the location; it is not that bad really - there is an underground station about 10 mins walk away. But to be honest, taxis are the best way to get round; they are plentiful and cheap. There is also a daily hotel shuttle bus to Syntagama Square.
Tips: Beach: If you want a to spend time at a nice beach, visit the Astir Beach at Vouliagmeni. It's 20km away and will cost no more than €20. Entrance is €25 per person, which may sound steep, however you are paying for excellent facilities. The beach is spotlessly clean and the water is beautifully clear. There is Starbucks inside and a TGI's. Lots of good sunbeds with shade. We spent two very relaxing days there and would recommend it.
Tips: Dining: Great fish restaurant in Plaka, not far from the hotel, called Psaras. Hotel will book for you. Ask the waiter to show you what fresh fish they have on offer.
Tips: Dining: Another fish restaurant - Jimmy The Fish in Piraeus. Fantastic location in the harbour. Once again, you need to book. Great food and service. Also, lots of lively bars in Piraeus.

We used the Athenaeum as a one day stop over before joining a cruise. It was a short ride from the airport, the room was large and clean (for two adults and two teens), and the lobby restaurant was very good, although very expensive. We were able to book a private tour guide from the concierge and received a fabulous restaurant recommendation as well. We sat on a rooftop eating phenomenal Greek food with a full view of the Acropolis...breathtaking! The buffet breakfast was huge, and we were able to negotiate a rate that included it with our room. We were glad we did because it was delicious, convenient, and would have been very expensive ($28 euros/adult) if we hadn't. The hotel was close to all of the main Athenian attractions and a half hour at the most from the pier where we boarded our cruise.

We loved the Intercontinental Athens. Upon entering, we felt like it was a true luxury hotel. The front desk was quick, friendly, and efficient. The concierge was very helpful and attentive.

The rooms were very nicely appointed. They were large, had very nice amenities, great bathrooms, very comfortable beds (you could choose your own pillow from a menu!), and were overall better than expected.

My only complaint about this hotel is the location. It is a little ways off (about 15 mins) from the center of the city (Syntagma square) and the Plaka district. The hotel operates a shuttle, but we didn't get a chance to use it. They told us that taxis cost about 3-4 euros. We got back pretty late from some of the tours we went on and wanted to eat dinner around the hotel, but we were surprised that there were very few options. The area is pretty dead at night.

On a side note, we booked tours through the hotel's official travel agency, Passepartout travel. DO NOT BOOK THROUGH THEM! They are a complete rip off and we had a lot of trouble with them. They completely overcharged us for airport transfers (charged us 150 euros when it should have cost 45), overcharged us for tours (at the price we paid, we should have gotten priviate luxury tours, but instead got tours with packed buses and double language). When we tried to get our money back, we had to really argue and fight with the managers in person (because communicating with them through email/phone was impossible after payment was made). So be careful!

Overall, I would recommend this hotel to a friend and would consider staying again, but I would also consider something closer to the center of the city.

The InterContinental was my boyfriend and my first accomodation in Greece and boy was it ever something. Upon arrival, our luggage was promptly taken up to our rooms as to be expected at a hotel of this nature. The bed was big, spacious and had comfortable bedding. I couldn't ask for more in terms of sleeping space. Though, the boyfriend did find the blankets too warm for the room and there was no other spare blanket that we could switch with. It was fine for me though.

The shower itself had enough water pressure but it was odd how there wasn't a full "shower door". Strangely it looked rather unfinished. Bathroom itself had everything, toiletries, bath, shower and a seperate foot tub/baby tub complete with a nice luxury white bathrobe hanging on the door. It made my bf feel like a king. ;)

We had the chance to order in room service our first night and that was enjoyable. Overpriced but that is to be expected at a 5star. I'm not too sure how much we would have loved it if we payed fullprice but at a priceline bargain, it was definitely a hit and worth it to stay here.

It was definitely a nice escape from the stifling Athens heat. The complimentary hotel shuttle took us down to the Square which was filled with all the restaurants/shops that is Greece. We lucked out the day we went to the Acropolis because the shuttle actually took us up so we didn't have to do the tedious trek before the trek!

Overall, I enjoyed all the Athenaeum had to offer, especially returning from a hot, hot walk outside. The airconditioning was a gift from above.

Stayed here for a conference and I would have to say that unless the company is picking up the Tab, be wary.

firstly, the staff were fine - concierge was great and organised for taxis, restaurants buses etc.

the rooms were pretty standard hotel fare, clean and tidy. the TV's were big LCD, but only had a few channels (I know not a huge issue when you are there to see the city, but this is meant to be a fancy hotel)

the biggest issue though were the "extras"

these included 20 Euro for wi-fi access per day, 40 Euro if you wanted it in the lobby. 6 Euro to send a fax, 11 Euro for a sandwich.

Like i said, I would not go back to this place again, find somewhere cheaper
