“Great Hotel, fantastic staff, so-so location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

The hotel is wonderful. Very clean, very up-to-date, very well staffed. The location isn't the greatest, as it's in the Athens Business district (which makes sense for business travelers). The hourly charter bus will stop near the Acropolis if you let them know, making up for the location.

This is a beautiful hotel, but what makes it an unbelievable hotel is the staff! They are stellar! They answered all our questions, gave us wonderful directions, and even remembered our names. We were very impressed. We were chasing a cruise ship because we missed our connection out of Chicago, so, we needed to have a good experience, and at the hotel that is what we got.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

Stayed here for 1 night (post cruise) in October 2013.

Pros:
1. Huge room and the bed is one of the most comfortable ones I have ever slept on.
2. Hotel is not at a central location but offers a complementary shuttle bus that departs hourly (and every 30 min at certain time of the day) to Syntagma Square and picks up people from there. The ride is about 10 minutes. The driver also drops you off on the way upon request, if you want to go to the Acropolis. There is also a bus station and a tram station nearby but it seems they are not very frequent (there are no schedules at the bus stop) so we mostly used the hotel shuttle bus.
3. Nice rooftop view of the Acropolis.

Cons:
1. Well, as said above, location.
2. Ridiculously expensive rate for wifi

Side note:
It should not cost more than 15 Euro by taxi from the cruise terminal (Piraeus) to the hotel. It costs about 35 Euro from the hotel to the airport (when there is no traffic). When taking a taxi in Athens, insist that the driver turns on the meter, and during the day time, make sure the meter reads "1", because "2" is the night rate (after midnight). Our taxi driver from the cruise terminal used the "2" rate all along the way and wanted to charge us 20 Euro, while the normal cost should only be 10 Euro (Saturday morning, no traffic at all). I ended up paying 15 Euro. So make sure the taxi drivers are using the right rate...I was very surprised seeing so many yellow taxis on the streets of Athens - it's like half of Athens is making a living by driving a taxi... Well, at least the second taxi driver (to the airport) was honest and did not attempt to cheat.

As an alternative, if not in a hurry, the airport bus x95 runs from Syntagma Square to the airport, costs 5 Euro pp and supposedly takes 1 hour. Airport bus x96 is also a good option from the airport to the Piraeus cruise terminal. x96 is 5 Euro pp and from the bus stop at Piraeus, a taxi to the cruise terminal costs only 5 Euro, while taxi all the way from the airport costs 50 Euro.

We had been on a cruise and stayed at the InterContinental before we left Athens. We had booked a superior room but upon check-in was offered an upgrade to a Club room for approx 50 Euros. We decided to pay for the upgrade and it was certainly worth it. The upgrade gave us access to a common room/lounge which looked out to the Acropolis. There was food and drink offered whenever we were there. Breakfast was also included and it was a lovely way to end our stay in Athens - having breakfast on a balcony looking at the Acropolis.
The room was large and the bed was very comfortable. In addition to the sleeping area, there was a lovely sitting area with a loveseat, table, 2 chairs and a desk. It was very clean and had a nice relaxing feel to it. Location was great as it was easy walking to the Acropolis and Plaka. However, the neighbourhood was a bit dodgy and wouldn't recommend walking around at night. Take a taxi.
There is also a bar / restaurant on top of the hotel. We had a lovely bottle of wine and watched the sun set over the Acropolis

Room Tip: Choose a club room.

I have stayed in this hotel a couple of times in 2012. It is one of the high class hotels in Athens. Rooms are quite big and comfortable. Hotel is overall in good conditions and relaxing. İdeal location to make a business trip. Helpful staff. It has a very nice bar to have a "before go to bed" drink. I can recomend it generally but dont forget to make a price comparison with other hotels in athens. Because it can be very pricy in high season.

Room Tip: Ask for the shuttle to city centre. I dont rememeber well but ı think they have it.

We stayed in this hotel one night before boarding a cruise. The location is ok but it is not really walking distance from much, in addition the area has several adult themed bars and shops. They do offer a shuttle to the Plaka which is a nice bonus and helps you save on cab fare. The rooms are comfortable and huge but really outdated. I felt like the lobby was nice and modern but when you stepped into the room you stepped back in time to the 80s. It served its purpose and the bed was pretty comfy, this was our first night in Europe after a red eye so my view on the comfort of the bed could be biased though. The breakfast in the morning was fantastic and worth the money!

Dear Shannon50,

Thank you for staying with us at the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens before joining a cruise in September.
Guest satisfaction is our primary concern and we are pleased to learn that our facilities met with your expectations, in particular, our complimentary shuttle bus service to Syntagma square. We have also noted that you enjoyed the comfort of our beds and our sumptuous breakfast buffet. With regard to our rooms, while most of them have been renovated, we are currently in the stage of planning our next renovation phase. We greatly appreciate your review and look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel on your next visit to our city.

The hotel itself is a big beast of a place with plenty of public spaces. Downside is that when they have events on, the foyer and entrance are full with people loitering about.

The room was very nice, the pool was good but a bit small and needs redesining. The food at breakfast was great, with a lot of variety. The bar on the roof was fabulous with amazing views of the Acropolis.

Biggest downside was how far it was from the centre...a 20 minute walk along a main road. Not too bad but its not in the best location.
