“pleasant stay, good hotel w/small issues”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

This is definetely an upscale hotel but we had couple of small issues with both
rooms. They were attentive and the issues were resolved (electrical outlet that tripped the breaker, broken bed leg, stuck bath tub drain). The hotel is centrally located closed to city center with the free shuttle that runs every 30 minutes. There is also the tram station one block away and metro station was one tram stop away in either direction (fix station). The neighbohood is okay, not terribly lively and with no places to eat close by. But if you feel adventurous right at fix metro station there are bunch of cute restaurants and great local atmosphere. We paid about 38euro to get there from the airport. Definetely a great view but you know that since everyone writes about it. We used hotel points to stay but it would have been disappointed if we had paid full price. But overall it was good hotel:-)

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013 via mobile

We stayed for 2 nights before going on a cruise. The hotel is well appointed, but a bit shabby and cries out for a refresh/refurbishment. The biggest disadvantage is the location, but this is obvious when booking (especially if you read TA Reviews first), and to an extent is reflected in the price. We went to the rooftop bar for a drink on the first night, but although there were hardly any other people up there, we were brusquely and rudely informed that all the comfortable chairs were reserved, and were ushered to a dank corner with uncomfortable seating. A few minutes later a 'corporate' group started to arrive on the terrace, and although they didn't occupy the seats, presumably they had 'reserved' them all! My wife went to look at the dinner menu, but was again brusquely told that the restaurant was closed to guests as the corporate group had reserved it! This would not be a problem in most hotels, but bearing in mind the terrible location of this one, was very annoying. The Concierge was helpful and suggested a local grill that was within walking distance, and was acceptable.
With the exception of the staff on the terrace, everyone was helpful and cheerful. The room was adequate, the public areas pleasant and overall I would describe it as average - but definitely not 5 star.

Dear Lazynights,

Thank you for staying with us at the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens before joining a cruise in September. Guest satisfaction is our primary concern and we are sorry to learn about your experience at our Premiere rooftop bar and restaurant. Though indeed rare, it seems that on the evening in question , our Premiere had been reserved for a private event and as such, offered restricted access to its areas for other hotel guests. Please accept our apologies for the disappointment this caused you. With regard to our location, may we take this opportunity to clarify that our hotel is situated in a residential and business area, with quick and easy access to the city centre, as noted on other TripAdvisor reviews. We thank you for your valuable feedback and trust that the isolated incident you experienced will not deter you from returning to the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens.

Yours sincerely,

Martha Pallis

We booked a "family room" for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. The room was great and had plenty of space. No noise from the heavily trafficated road nearby. The reception staff were very flexible, so we could check in at 11:30AM and check out at 2PM. The Wifi-service was chargeable (€6 per day), but you only pay for the first device. The rest will be deducted when you check out. It is a 20 min walk up to Acropolis, nice restaurants and so on. The sightseeing bus is just 5 min down the road. The best way to get to/from the airport is by taxi (€45). The breakfast was fantastic, but quite expensive. However, it was included in our package.

A typical "old" InterContinental. Spacious rooms, nice breakfast, very good service. We stayed here whilst on our way to Santorini and wanted to spend a day or two in Athens first. Service was attentive. Our room would definitely benefit from renovation, especially the bathroom. A serious update in matters of upholstery would elevate the overall feeling. The Club InterContinental Lounge was definitely worth it. Nice public areas. Looooved the sphere in the lobby!

The hotel is not centrally located but the hourly shuttle made all the difference; you can get to the city center in 10 minutes; the neighborhood of the hotel is really poor with nothing interesting around not even a decent restaurant; we took dinner at Vienna at the ground floor & the food was average.
Check- in was smooth; however, despite leaving a note when booking that a quiet room is a must, the room we were granted was facing a service door! Despite asking for relocation, we ended up staying there for 4 nights as we were told the hotel was full;
Rooms despite being spacious are low-ceilinged with a rough white paint; furniture feels outdated although room seems renovated not long ago;the décor is quite impersonal similarly to the rest of the hotel common spaces; beds were extremely comfortable & toiletries just great;
However, the main issue was the rooms’ soundproofing; we could hear every single word from the adjacent rooms. Situation was just horrible when having to stand a Skype conversation of the neighbor with his wife at 2 a.m. in the morning! The hotel security dealt with it after 2 calls & 50 minutes wait.
The outside pool of the hotel is very small & closed quite early for summer days (7 p.m.); breakfast was amazing & staff very courteous & friendly.
We would like to thank Nicky & Yanni at the reception who were really helpful during our stay..

Although the surrounding area might appear a bit "scruffy", the hotel offers great opportunities : spacious and CLEAN bedrooms, friendly service, excellent food and a wonderful roof terrace overlooking the acropolis. And for the green lovers, great possibilities to use public transportation to major site areas in the city.
