We stayed here for a couple nights during our tour of Greece thanks to an overbooking at a much smaller hotel. The intercontinental was by far the nicest, most luxurious, and most comfortable hotel we stayed at during our month in Greece, but it's location leaves a bit to be desired. The public transportation is fine and you can definitely get around, but its quite a haul to walk to the Acropolis or the Plaka or frankly anywhere else you really want to go when there. An absolutely gorgeous hotel, but I prefer to be much closer to the action, for me it's worth the sacrifice.

My girlfriend and I throughly enjoyed our stay at the Intercontinental. The rooms were spacious, the service was exemplary (as one would expect) and their rooftop dining restaurant with Acropolis view was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip around Europe.

We landed this hotel on Priceline for a ridiculously low rate but got an great room (albeit on the lower floor with no view) and was treated by the staff all the same. It is quite far out of the way from main sights, but a free shuttle van leaves every 1/2 hour and takes you to Syntagma Square (Parliament) and even the Acropolis (if you ask them). The hotel is also conveniently located about a block away from a tram station (which you can also take to Syntagma) should you miss the last shuttle around 11pm or don't want to wait.

PS. if you decide to take a taxi from Syntagma Square to the hotel, it should only be about 6 Euros. A number of Athens taxis there do not use meters and will rip you off by quoting exorbitant rates!

Stayed here for one night on a Priceline win. Wanted a king-bed room and had not asked for it in advance - wasn't expecting to get one but we did! Room was very spacious, compared to what I had been expecting for a European hotel - it was up to North American standards in fact. The fitness room (which we used) was better than most hotel fitness rooms I've been in, with a decent supply of new Techno-branded gym equipment and is open 24hrs. In fact, the dumbells if I recall correctly went up as far as 40lbs, which is more than most hotels offer.

The hotel is located farther away from the nearest subway stop than we had thought. We didn't use it as we had taken the taxi from the airport to the hotel. We passed it on our walk to the Acropolis and remarked how far it was - I wouldn't recommend taking the subway if you have a great deal of luggage. IF you don't mind a 5-10min walk and you have only carryon or lighter luggage, it might not be so bad (there are a couple of busy streets you will have to cross). This was probably my only minor gripe with the hotel - as a result of the distance from the subway (we each had one 20kg rolling checked luggage with us), we opted to take a taxi on our exit from the hotel to Piraeus port to catch our ferry, rather than attempt to get to the subway on a hot June afternoon. The other side of this though is that the hotel is located in a quiet area with little noise, which is a plus.

One must-do esp. if you stay in this hotel is that you must visit the bar on the rooftop. We arrived to the hotel at 11pm on a Thursday night, and were happy to see that the bar was still open (until 1am or 2am). The outside bar on the roof has a commanding view of the Acropolis at night, and is a must-do - it saved us a trip out to the streets of Athens to find a nightview of the Acropolis. We hunkered down with a glass of wine each at the rooftop bar, and they brought some complimentary nuts and had a great evening and took some amazing shots. There are ledges alongside the edge of the bar which are perfect for setting up your camera for a nice long-open-shuttered shot to capture that Acropolis view.

The Priceline win does not include breakfast. Perhaps other purchase methods might. That afforded us an opporunity to make the 15-20min walk to Syntagma square where we had a nice breakfast, then walked to the south entrance of the Acropolis for the visit. We found the walk to Acropolis very manageable, although there are two busy streets that you will have to cross.

Overall, I'd recommend this hotel if you can get a good deal on it. I had low expectation of this place given what else is available in Athens, and was pleasantly surprised.

A well-known online auction website put us here for 60 british pounds and I have never had a better deal. This is one of the better 5-stars I have stayed at and cannot recommend it highly enough to the discerning traveller.

Spent four nights at the Athenaeum and was very impressed with this hotel. It is a little out of the way (my only negative comment) and could be considered to be a little lacking on character with the emphasis on being a 'business' hotel. However, the service is excellent, from our arrival at 4am to our departure. The lobby bar is extremely comfortable with charming service and Cafe Zoe was also very good although prices are a little steep, as are room service and the minibar (which was as expected).

Our room was generously proportioned with a very comfortable bed and seating area, the bathroom too was very well appointed. The towels and bathrobes were particularly soft and luxurious and we appreciated the Korres toiletries which were supplied plentifully every day. Housekeeping was to a very high standard indeed.

The courtesy bus to Syntagma square is a bonus running every half hour but there were always plenty of taxis outside for other trips. Just off the busy Syngrou Avenue there isn't really anywhere to walk too and you do rather rely on the cabs (which are very reasonably priced) and the bus service. Although at times we enjoyed being away from the frantic centre of Athens.

All in all yet another very good Intercontinental hotel and I would thoroughly recommend.
