“Very nice hotel- fairly priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Very clean hotel, friendly staff, good- size rooms, fairly priced. easy to find parking nearby (very important for athens!)- and good location, although means of transportation is definitely needed to visit the center of the city. Good impression overall.

I stayed here on business. Perfect to be in the centre of Athens, top floor has excellent view of the Acropolis. Staff are excellent, food is excellent, rooms are excellent. Can't fault this hotel. I would never normally stay here due to cost but since the recession I was able to get it for €89 a night!! Honestly, a Holiday Inn is the same price and this hotel is much much nicer. I post value for money ONLY because of the price I paid, if you have to pay €200 a night you might feel a bit robbed.

We stayed at the Intercontinental in February 2013 and found it to be a wonderful hotel.

The hotel itself is huge (you can actually see it from the Acropolis). Inside it is what you would expect from a 5 star hotel (white marble shinny things etc).

We stayed in a club room which we would strongly recommend! For those who aren’t familiar with club Intercontinental it is the top two floors in the hotel with bigger better rooms (the club rooms at this hotel are very nice and spacious). You also get private check in, 24 hour concierge (who were really excellent) and access to the club room which is excellent (and actually saves you money).

In the club room you have free soft drinks all day (and alcoholic drinks in from 6 – 9pm). You also get breakfast (which costs between 30-40 euros in the hotel) but is free on the club floor as is the lunch and light dinner which they also have.

The club staff are very attentive and during our 5 days we never saw that there were more than a 2:1 guest to staff ratio.

The food from the hotels bar and other eateries is good quality but a bit on the expensive side (I think it was about 27 euros for an omelette).

The hotel isn’t within walking distance on Athens but has a shuttle bus, which we used a few times. However cabs are so cheap we ended up not using the bus after the first day or so.

The hotel is situated just off the main road from the coast (and docks) into Athens. The road is always very very busy and you would imagine but that didn’t effect us and you cannot hear any road notice when you are in the hotel.

There were three things which were a bit off putting; firstly the hotel is next to a fairly run down housing estate, its probably safe but not somewhere I would walk around at night. There are also a few big strip/sex clubs on the main road and one of them was quite close to the hotel. We didn’t see any trouble from it and it seems all the big hotels were close to establishments like these. Secondly there is no inside pool/spa. The hotel has an outside pool (although it was close to the road and I wonder how relaxing it would be to use it) but this couldn’t be used in February. In a hotel of this quality I would have expected a an inside pool with free spa facilities. Finally the American Ambassador held a trade reception and the hotel one night and the service for us ordinary people dipped a little.

Room Tip: Book a club room

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for staying at the Athenaeum InterContinental while visiting Athens last month and for taking the time to share your comments. It is always a pleasure to learn from a guest that their stay met with their expectations and we are most grateful for your recommendation. Further to your comment about an indoor spa, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the I-Spa by Asian Spa City Retreat operates at our hotel on a daily basis, with a wet area that includes a sauna and steam room as well as a large number of treatments to choose from. Furthermore, we have noted the lapse in service you experienced on one occasion and would like to express our apologies for the disappointment we caused you. Once again, thank you for your valuable and detailed comments. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental on your next visit to Athens.

While this is overall a very nice hotel, Priority Club members must be forewarned of several things (which, to me, make other hotel programs usable in Athens a better deal -- which, also to me, is quite alarming since you would think they would value their most loyal customers the most and make the platinum membership in their own rewards program competitively advantageous -- bad business prevails I guess): (a) NOT in the best location/neighborhood (busy business street that is not in the City centre), although they provide free shuttle service to the centre and there is a tram nearby; (b) they do NOT provide complimentary room upgrades like other platinum rewards programs; (c) their rewards rooms are their worst rooms (""Superior") and NOT their better rooms ("Deluxe" or "Club"); (d) they do NOT provide complimentary internet (and, in fact, while charging comparable to other upper-end hotels, make it a very expensive add-on); and (e) they do NOT provide any sort of complimentary American or continental breakfast (once again, while charging comparable to other upper-end hotels, this makes it a very expensive add-on). For my money, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, etc. all treat their most loyal customers better than Intercontinental does, and, therefor, are the places to stay in Athens.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms or better or don't stay.

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for choosing the Athenaeum InterContinental to redeem points for a reward night stay in Athens last month. As a valued Priority Club member, your feedback is important and assists us in identifying certain areas in need of improvement. While it is true that the benefits of the Platinum Priority Club Rewards membership, such as a room upgrade, do not apply when one reserves a reward night stay, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you about another loyalty program, InterContinental Ambassador, that is valid at InterContinental hotels and resorts. This is a benefits program and offers members a number of important benefits such as guaranteed room upgrades, guaranteed late check-out at 4pm, free weekend-night, to name just a few. As you are already a Priority Club member, you may retain the same membership number and enrol as an Ambassador member to receive the benefits. Moreover, when making a reservation for our hotel, one has the option of reserving room rates that include breakfast and/or internet access. We thank you again for your valuable feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental on a future visit to Athens.

The hotel is nice located not far away from the center of Athens, but also not too close to it. The distance to the beach is acceptable and museums or sightseeings are within 10 minutes drive.Staff is very friendly, especially in the Spa. The hotel looks like it needs renovation in certain areas such as Club Lounge. Nevertheless, from the Club Lounge there is a very nice view to Acropolis and St. George.

In Athens on business & decided to try this place, instead of my usual hotel. First impressions are obtained from the surrounding neighbourhood, which is not very nice. I wouldn't walk around here on my own at night. Hotel lobby is big & the welcome is warm, professional and friendly. As with everywhere in Greece, English is spoken as standard. The room I had was also spacious, so felt comfortable from that perspective but it is partly carpeted, which I really don't like (the rest is marble which is lovely - why not throughout entire room?). Bathroom doesn't have separate shower but can make do with shower over bath. Korres products in bathroom are a little luxury & absolutely the best I've ever used. Love these products so much, I stock up at Athens airport every time I fly out! Free wi-fi is available & works well. But overall it's a big hotel, which lacks a bit of individuality or quirky characteristics, and the area lets it down somewhat.

Athens can seem a bit chaotic, but this hotel has all the amenities you'd want to counter that, feeling like a protected enclave. It has the feeling of a business hotel, so I just found it a good pit stop before proceeding on to one of the Greek islands—so much so that I stayed their again on my way back home. It's not that I was floored by the rooms or hotel restaurants, but it does provide convenient accommodations that don't have any unpleasant surprises, and it's well-located.
